004 - The BenRiach: 15yo Tawny, 15yo PX & 17yo Septendecim
Living The Dram, Episode 004
Rickus & Hursty head back to Speyside to discover the amazingly rich history of BenRiach.
The boys are slowly finding their feet with this podcasting thing, blending banter and research to create an entertaining and informative exploration of this unconventional distillery. Grab a glass and fill it with some well-aged whisky and enjoy some expletive filled musings on the sampled drams as well as the Pattison crash.
Established in 1898, the BenRiach distillery is located in the North East region of Morayshire, Scotland, considered by some to be the “Heart of Speyside”. To balance the N.A.S. theme of the previous episode, they decided to go the opposite direction and focus on some whiskies that had spent more time in wood. To that end they taste, discuss and rate the BenRiach Tawny Port Wood Finish 15 year old, the BenRiach Pedro Ximinez Wood Finish 15 year old, and the BenRiach Septendecim 17 year old.
Addressing General Ignorance:
•U.S. law requires the use of new barrels for several popular types of whiskey, which is not typically considered necessary elsewhere, so whiskey made elsewhere is usually aged in used barrels that previously contained American whiskey (usually bourbon whiskey).

○ Distillery of the Year, Malt Advocate Whisky Awards 2007

•The name ‘Glenlivet’ comes from the Gaelic liobh ait, which which means “smooth flowing one” in reference to the river that flows through the glen During the illicit period, however, ‘Glenlivet’ had become shorthand for whiskies coming from what we now know as Speyside. Many of the new distilleries – some as far away as the Moray coast – began to call themselves ‘Glenlivet’ despite being nowhere near the location.

UM! Whisky Tour #20: Glen Moray
The penultimate episode of GogsieBroons' Amazing World of Whisky (Speyside Tour 2009) sees the erstwhile Mr Broon in the town of Elgin at the criminally underrated Glen Moray distillery where he refrains from publicly making a spacker of himself and instead, quietly appreciates his whiskoid. Also Linkwood, Inchgower and Glenglassaugh. Uisge Mhath!.

This month's Summerton Club note:
Douglas Laing’s Old Particular Single Cask Craigellachie 12 Year Old
Established in 1948, founded by Fred Douglas Laing in 1948, still owned and run by the Laing family – Fred Laing Jr and his daughter Cara Laing, Douglas Laing is a leading independent blender and bottler specialising in the creation of artisan, small batch and Single Cask Scotch Whiskies. Hand-selected from the finest, and often rarest stocks available throughout Scotland, their Whisky is offered as the Distiller intended: At high alcohol strength and proudly without chill filtration or added colour.
From their fantastic range, we have chosen to share the Old Particular Single Cask Craigellachie 12 Year Old, of which there will only ever be 358 bottles. This Speyside Single Malt offers a nose of sweet barley and freshly cut grass, with a palate of marmalade and cinnamon and medium-long finish.
This bottle offers a great example of Craigellachie’s amazing work, a distillery with nearly one hundred and thirty years of history creating a delightful whisky with a heavier mouthfeel and floral notes.
