Bowen's Big Mango Tourist Attraction Goes Missing in North Queensland, Australia
Thieves make off with giant Australian mango monument. Thieves armed with heavy machinery and cranes made a daring midnight heist in northern Australia, stealing a 10-metre, seven-tonne mango monument, officials said on Monday. The Big Mango, a towering likeness of the fruit which is abundant in the statue's hometown of Bowen, in Queensland, is one of more than 150 Big Things erected as kitschy tourist attractions across Australia. The famous fruit, which was unveiled in 2002, appeared to have been harvested overnight in an ambitious raid, said Bowen Tourism chairman Paul McLaughlin. It looks like it was sort of two o'clock this morning-type thing. There was... some heavy equipment and it looks like they've taken the mango, McLaughlin told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. He said he thought it was a joke when he was first informed of the mango's abduction but I've come out and sure enough the mango has disappeared. McLaughlin said there was surveillance camera footage of the heist and he was sure the plundered fruit would be found. At the end of the day, it's a bloody big mango and I'm sure someone will see it and we'll find it anyway, he told the Brisbane Times. I think it'll definitely turn up, no doubt about that. We're not sure what has happened but I'm sure we'll get it back. There are giant fruits all over Australia, including the Big Banana, the Big Pineapple, the Big Strawberry and multiple Big Apples and Oranges. There are also giant fishes, a lobster, penguin, kangaroo, koalas, and even a giant cask of wine. Bowen is known as the mango production capital of Australia. - AFP/al

Nando's steal giant Australian mango: CCTV shows mango heist
Subscribe to ITN News:
The theft of Queensland's giant mango has been revealed to be a PR stunt by fast food chain Nando's. The fibre glass landmark, weighing seven-tonnes and measuring ten-metres high, disappeared from a plinth outside Bowen Tourist Information Centre in the early hours of Monday. However, on Tuesday it was spotted in bushland just a few hundred metres from its resting place, with Nando's admitting: We confess. Nando's would like to thank the people of Bowen for being good sports about us 'borrowing' their beautiful mango. We promise we're taking good care of it and it will be returned to its rightful position soon(ish). Bowen is known as the the mango-growing capital of Australia and the Big Mango was installed in 2002 at a cost of A$90,000. Report by Sophie Foster.

Replica of Bowen's Big Mango And A Giant Lime Popped Up in Melbourne's Federation Square
Nando's aimed to 'break the mould' with Mango Heist. The mystery of the 'stolen' giant mango from the Queensland town of Bowen concluded this morning when a replica mango popped up in Melbourne's Federation Square. The stunt was a marketing push by Banjo Advertising to launch chicken restaurant Nando's new sauce flavour mango and lime. Dubbed #mangogate on social sites, news of Bowen's missing mango quickly spread around the world with coverage in the UK, Belgium and France. Peta Morton, senior planner on the Nando's account for Banjo, told B&T the idea for mango heist was simple: We were launching a big new flavour. And a big new flavour needed a big newsworthy stunt. Because Nando's is not like any other brand. When it has something to say, it does it in a way that breaks the mould,Morton said. So when it came to launching the new Mango & Lime flavour we believed Nando's needed to create a program that engaged, drove intrigue and builded momentum. A program that would get people talking and reward them for their involvement. A program that would culminate in a 'reveal' that is the product launch. The project brought together the brand and Tourism Bowen to pull of the heist which ended this morning with a replica of Bowen's mango and a giant lime set up in Melbourne's Fed Square with product sampling. Peta said the Banjo team and Nando's marketing were excited to see how much engagement the stunt created: The news spread so quickly across Australia and the world with some amazing memes beings uploaded by people to the Bowen's Big Mango Facebook page created for the stunt. In a time when we can take things too seriously, it's nice to see Aussies still love a little Aussies , and have a unique fondness for all the 'Big things' on this great continent. A song was created by one member of the public about the missing mango and someone else even put the 'stolen' mango up for sale on Gumtree.

I got to Airlie Beach, 650km from Cairns. Shortly stopped for a quick lookout in Townsville which is just an industrial city. I met my mystery driver though my ad on gumtree for a road trip, but it turned out very awkward. So, it's one of those days when you feel like solo traveling really sucks, but you're free to choose to go on your own anytime.

Mango Mystery: Seven-tonne fruit disappears in Australia
Subscribe to ITN News:
A seven-tonne, 10-metre high, Big Mango had disappeared from Bowen in North Queensland in Australia. Staff at the Bowen Tourist Information Centre arrived at work to find the giant piece of fruit had gone missing. Paul McLaughlin is Chairman of Bowen Tourism: Well, as you can see the Big Mango's gone missing. The girls rang me this morning when they come to work. It was definitely here yesterday and when they come to work this morning they've informed me the Big Mango's gone missing so I come out and sure enough it's no longer there. Local media reported that the Big Mango was most likely taken between midnight and 2 am local time and CCTV is being reviewed but so far the search has proven fruitless. Some media reports suggested that the whole thing may have been a publicity prank. Bowen is known as the the mango-growing capital of Australia and the Big Mango was installed in 2002. Australia is home to many large pieces of fruit at various locations across the country, including the Big Pineapple and the Big Banana. Report by Claire Mewse.

Big Mango Theft Exposed As PR Stunt That Had Us Fooled - #MangoGate #BigMango
The mysterious disappearance of Bowen's Big Mango has been revealed as an elaborate publicity stunt. The ten-metre tall monument to one of Australia's most loved summer fruits made headlines around the world after it was reportedly stolen from its home in Bowen, Queensland early yesterday morning. The chairman of the Bowen Tourism Board, Paul McLaughlin, denied orchestrating the mango's disappearance and it seems he was technically correct, even though it appears he was in on the successful viral marketing stunt. A man who claimed he helped shift the mango and hide it in bushes around 500m from the site said he was contracted by a Sydney-based marketing firm. Neil Stone, an employee of crane company S&W Crane Hire, said he had been hired to move the mango by Banjo Advertising but declined to say if the job was done at the request of the Bowen Tourism Board. I'm not allowed to say anything until this afternoon, he told The Sydney Morning Herald. The plot thickened this morning when fastfood chain Nando's released a statement saying they would take good care of the mango, and would return it to its rightful position soon(ish) A spokesman said more information would be made available on Friday. Many thought the disappearance bore the hallmarks of a viral campaign, with cynics using the Twitter hash tag #MangoGate to poke fun at the incident. One meme pictured Miley Cyrus swinging on a giant mango wrecking ball — a reference to her recent pop music video.
I'm looking for a large banana and pineapple, another wrote in cheeky email doing the rounds. Wanting to make a huge fruit salad, and I already have the mango. The Sunshine Coast hosts the Big Pineapple and the Big Banana is found in Coffs Harbour, on the NSW north coast. News media outlets in Britain, which sends hordes of backpackers to Queensland's tropical coastline each year, have already jumped on the story, including the BBC and Telegraph. Bowen police said they were aware the mango was missing but no theft had been reported. At this stage we're taking a soft approach and making our own inquiries, Mr McLaughlin told reporters. I think it'll definitely turn up, no doubt about that. We're not sure what has happened but I'm sure we'll get it back. Tyre marks near the site suggested the culprits headed south on the Bruce Highway, the tourist centre said, but no sightings had been reported. A north Sydney advertising agency has also been uncovered as the author of a Tourism Bowen media release about the theft. The Guardian Australia examined metadata within a pdf file of the media release and found the author name of Banjo Advertising. Laurence Cronin, a senior writer at Banjo, reportedly said the agency was helping out a friend to find the missing mango, but could not categorically deny it was a marketing stunt. The monument was erected in 2002 as a tourist attraction to celebrate Bowen's claim of being the mango production capital of Australia.

Bowen Mango-Mania Helps Put The Town On The Map (Thanks to #MangoGate & #NandosAus)
As Bowen's Big Mango settles back into its usual home, you'd think the mango-mania surrounding its disappearance would settle down. But Bowen Tourism chairman Paul McLaughlin said it was just the beginning for the town. Mr McLaughlin described the stunt as marvellous and said it helped put a struggling community onto the map. We have had worldwide news and it's really helped people know where we are, Mr McLaughlin said. We have had lots of positive feedback about it - we have been doing it tough and to have this outcome has surprised a lot of people.'' The mango was put back in the same position yesterday, despite many suggesting it was upside-down. The removal of the mango was an initiative from fast-food chain Nando's to promote a new mango inspired flavour to their menu. We are looking at running some campaigns and using the Nando's Facebook and social media pages to best convert this media attention into getting people into Bowen, Mr McLaughlin said. At this stage the news media will help. We are expecting some tourism dollars in publicity and we would like to see an increase in visitors to the Whitsunday region in general.
