North Kenya Expedition Part 3 - Tackling the Chalbi Desert | 2016
After seeing a mountain, a lake, a remote village on the lake, a desert and many villages along the way, we finally descended upon Marsabit Town at around 9pm. We didn't know what to expect in Marsabit but we realized there's a lot of construction going on and the town is growing rapidly. We camped in the park where you can see elephants with some of the biggest tusks in Kenya. However, we didn't manage to spot any. It was beautiful nonetheless.
The journey was a beautiful one which will stay with us forever. This story is not only about the places we go but also about how the four of us have become the best of friends through adventure. Sometimes we hate each other, most times we love each other. And we're lucky to forage even further into this beautiful land of ours.

The wildlife in the Amboseli National Park (Kenya)
(EN) Amboseli National Park, formerly Maasai Amboseli Game Reserve, is in Kajiado District, Rift Valley Province in Kenya. The park is 39,206 hectares (392 km2; 151 sq mi) in size at the core of an 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq mi) ecosystem that spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border. The local people are mainly Maasai, but people from other parts of the country have settled there attracted by the successful tourist-driven economy and intensive agriculture along the system of swamps that makes this low-rainfall area (average 350 mm (14 in)) one of the best wildlife-viewing experiences in the world with 400 species of birds including water birds, pelicans, kingfishers, crakes, hammerkops and 47 types of raptor.[2]
The park protects two of the five main swamps, and includes a dried-up Pleistocene lake and semi-arid vegetation.
140 kilometres (87 mi) South of the capital city Nairobi, Amboseli National Park is the second most popular national park in Kenya after Maasai Mara National Reserve and the visit can easily be done in a weekend.

The wildlife in the Maasai-Mara reserve (Kenya)
(EN) The Maasai Mara National Reserve (also spelled Masai Mara; known by the locals as The Mara) is a large game reserve in south-western Kenya, which is effectively the northern continuation of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is named after the Maasai people (the traditional inhabitants of the area) and their description of the area when looked at from afar: Mara, which is Maa (Maasai language) for spotted, an apt description for the circles of trees, scrub, savanna, and cloud shadows that mark the area.
It is famous for its exceptional population of Big Cats, game, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest from the Serengeti every year from July to October, a migration so immense that it is called the Great Migration!
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is only a fraction of the Greater Mara Ecosystem, which includes the following Group Ranches: Koiyaki, Lemek, Ol Chorro Oirowua, Olkinyei, Siana, Maji Moto, Naikara, Ol Derkesi, Kerinkani, Oloirien, and Kimintet.

'Road to Prosperity' episode 8: Protecting nature along the Mombasa-Nairobi Short Guage Railway
Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s biggest wildlife reserve and the world’s biggest elephant habitat. When it was established in 1948, the British-built meter gauge railway already ran through the area. During the planning of the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), China proposed circumventing the park, but the high cost removed this option from the table. In order to protect the wildlife, the railway is fenced in or built on tall bridges. Working with the Kenya Wildlife Service, scientists and environmental protection organizations to map wildlife migration routes, Chinese builders also designed passages that allow elephants and other big animals to safely pass under the railway. Chinese railway constructors are committed to keeping a balance between environmental conservation and infrastructure development.

The Man-Eating Lions of Tsavo
In 1898, two African lions began attacking and consuming railway workers in Tsavo, Kenya. First reports estimated that 135 people fell victim to these man-eaters, but further research published in 2009 lessened that number to 35 individuals. Over the years, different theories as to what motivated these attacks have varied, and recently we got to talk with two experts who are working towards finding an answer.

Infrastructure boom threatens Kenyan lions
(16 Dec 2018) LEAD IN :
A boom in infrastructure projects around the Kenyan capital is putting pressure on lions and other carnivores within Nairobi National Park according the Kenya Wildlife Service.
Nairobi National Park is the only wildlife park in the world that lies within a country's capital city.
STORYLINE :
A pride of lions relaxes in Nairobi National Park.
The Kenyan capital's boom in apartment and road construction to accommodate the city's expanding population is putting heavy pressure on the wildlife near the city.
Some of the lions in the park have been straying into human settlements where they are shot and killed to protect the public.
According to Kenya Wildlife Service (K.W.S), the population of lions has sharply decreased over the years. Kenya currently only has 2,000 lions, down from 2,280 in 2004.
Lions have also fallen victim to retaliatory killings through poisoning as pastoralist communities strive to protect their livestock.
Kenya Wildlife Service have fitted some lions with satellite tracking collars so they can monitor and map out lion movements in and around the park, so that they are alerted when lions start to stray into areas of danger.
In 2013, the Kenyan government embarked on a number of infrastructure projects that included the construction a 480 km railway that cut through Nairobi National Park.
Despite protests from various conservationists the railway was opened in 2017, it crosses the park on an 18-metre high bridge to help protect the wildlife that live below.
Elphas Bitok, is a research scientist at Nairobi National Park says that as a solution to the problem, the Kenya Wildlife Service is encouraging communities to establish sanctuaries outside areas meant for wildlife in order to ensure reduced human-wildlife conflicts
K.W.S (Kenya Wildlife Service) is encouraging communities to establish sanctuaries outside the protected areas so that more land is available for wildlife. K.W.S has also been trying to acquire more land outside or just to the southern part of the park so that the land that has been lost to infrastructure could be replaced so as to maintain the ecological integrity of the park. he says.
Bitok says that infrastructure has reduced that amount of land that was available for browsing animals as well as affecting the movement patterns of carnivores such as lions.
Outside the park, there is a lot of subdivision and fragmentation of land that used to be a wildlife dispersal area. So, when we move outside the park, we no longer have areas for wildlife, said Bitok.
Shadrack Ngene, the Head of Species Conservation and Management at Kenya Wildlife Service says that the park's proximity to a fast growing metropolis means that there is often conflict between human settlements, transport network developments and migrating wildlife.
Carnivores are currently facing the challenge of changing landscape with the increase of human population, we have a lot of changes of land use and land tenure and with that, there is the constriction of the range for the carnivores,
According to Ngene, the Kenya Wildlife Service has noted an increase in the number of livestock in habitats that are ideally meant for carnivores. This has caused an increase in conflict cases between livestock and carnivores.
The Nairobi National Park is home 100 different mammal species including rhinos, cheetahs and giraffes. It also hosts 400 migratory and endemic bird species.

The lions of the Ngorongoro (Tanzania)
(EN) The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) is a conservation area and a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, an arm of the Tanzanian government, and its boundaries follow the boundary of the Ngorongoro Division of Ngorongoro District. The Ngorongoro Crater, a large volcanic caldera, lies within the area. A population of approximately 25,000 large animals, largely ungulates along with reputedly the highest density of mammalian predators in Africa, lives in the crater. Large animals in the crater include the black rhinoceros, the local population of which declined from about 108 in 1964-66 to between 11-14 in 1995, and the hippopotamus, which is very uncommon in the area. There also are many other ungulates: the wildebeest (7,000 estimated in 1994), the zebra (4,000), the eland, and Grant's and Thompson's gazelles (3,000).
The crater has the densest known population of lions, numbering 62 in 2001. On the crater rim are leopards, elephants - numbering 42 in 1987 but only 29 in 1992 - mountain reedbuck, and buffalo (4,000 in 1994).
However, since the 1980s the crater's wildebeest population has fallen by a quarter to about 19,000 and the numbers of eland and Thomson's gazelle also have declined while the buffalo population has increased greatly, probably due to the long prevention of fire which favors high-fibrous grasses over shorter, less fibrous types.
In summer, enormous numbers of Serengeti migrants pass through the plains of the reserve, including 1.7 million wildebeest, 260,000 zebra, and 470,000 gazelles. Waterbuck occur mainly near Lerai Forest; servals occur widely in the crater and on the plains to the west. Common in the reserve are lions, hartebeest, spotted hyenas and jackals. Cheetahs, although common in the reserve, are scarce in the crater itself. The African Wild Dog has recently[when?] disappeared from the crater and may have declined elsewhere in the Conservation Area as well, as well as throughout Tanzania according to C. Michael Hogan.

► Serengeti - The Adventure (Full Documentary, HD)
The Serengeti, East Africa's eternal paradise, with its endless expanses and wild animals, makes one feel as though evokes a sense of having arrived in an apparently peaceful corner of the world.
Nature filmmaker Reinhard Radke spent more than two years in the land of the Massai and captured breathtaking images. The documentary accompanies the animal filmmaker at work on his new cinema film Serengeti in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and illustrates the conditions and the difficulties that can arise when making animal films of this scope and the possibilities provided by state-of-the-art film technology.
Particularly the unique, super slow motion footage
enables zoologists to partake in new fields of research. On the other hand, modern technology is also susceptible to faults and can therefore also hinder the work of an animal filmmaker.
