THE HOMEWARD BOUND STAMPER BATTERY.mp4
The Homeward Bound stamper battery in New Zealand's south island is the most physically spectacular surviving battery in the country. What makes it so are two things: first, the ore bins are still intact; and second, the ten stamper rods are twice the weight of the norm - a ton each. Another unique feature is that several of the towers supporting the aerial rope-way are still standing. Built out of massive timbers, the battery is an impressive structure. But the heavy rock crusher has fallen down destabilising the building, and, temporary roofs put on to protect the structure leave something to be desired. Department of Conservation staff visit the battery to consider what further preservation measures might be needed.
