La ville de Hamilton est la capitale des Bermudes. Elle possède non seulement une multitude d'hôtels, restaurants et boutiques mais on y retrouve également de nombreux bâtiments historiques, musées, monuments, etc.
La meilleure façon de découvrir cette ville pour en avoir une idée générale est de la parcourir à pied.
Front Street est une des rues les plus fréquentées de Hamilton. Elle est située en bordure de l'eau. La devanture multicolore des commerces ajoute au charme pittoresque de cette ville.
A la jonction de Front Street et Queen Street, il y a une cage métallique appelée Birdcage qui était utilisée autrefois par les policiers pour diriger la circulation.
Le terminal de traversiers est situé à l'extrémité ouest de Front Street. Trois itinéraires sont offerts afin de se déplacer rapidement sur différentes parties de l'île dont la plus éloignée est le port militaire de la Royal Naval (Royal Naval Dockyard).
Tout près du terminal se trouvent deux jolis parcs: Point Pleasant Park et Barr's Bay Park.
Sur la rue Queen, se trouve le bureau de poste de Perot qui a été érigé au XIXe siècle. Ce bâtiment abrite d'ailleurs encore aujourd'hui un bureau de poste.
On y retrouve également de jolis bâtiments colorés dont le Bermudiana Arcade, un centre commercial qui contient des boutiques et des restaurants. A proximité, se trouve même un restaurant Poulet Frit Kentucky (KFC).
Le City Hall and Arts Centre est situé sur Church Street, une artère principale de la ville. Il s'agit d'un immense complexe blanc dont une rose des vents est peinte sur la tour du bâtiment. Il abrite la Galerie nationale des Bermudes qui présente des oeuvres d'art locales et internationales.
Sur Church Street, vous trouverez également Sessions House qui est en fait le parlement. Il a été érigé au début du XIXe siècle. On le reconnaît par sa fameuse tour de l'horloge qui a été construite à la fin du même siècle pour souligner le jubilé d'or de la Reine Victoria.
A l'arrière du parlement, se trouve l'église méthodiste Wesley.
Toujours sur Church Street, nous vous invitons à visiter la Cathédrale de la Très Sainte Trinité (voir vidéo
Elle vaut vraiment le détour. Elle possède de beaux vitraux et elle est ornée de belles sculptures.
A la jonction de Court Street et Victoria Street se trouve une autre jolie église: St. Paul's AME Church.
Nous sommes revenus sur Front Street et nous nous sommes arrêtés devant l'édifice Cabinet Building. C'est à cet endroit que se rassemble le Sénat.
Vous pouvez également accéder à un joli parc, le Queen Elizabeth Park, à partir des escaliers situés sur la rue Par-La-Ville.

A great stay at Coral Beach.
Crystal clear aerial of South Shore and Kindley Field airport on approach to the island.
A calm Hamilton Harbor and busy Front Street - Bobby in the Birdcage directing traffic. Waterloo House and neighboring houses (all but 1 have been demolished).
Coral Beach Club - on the beach & on the patio. Lunch service and a walk... sunny & bright day!

Bermuda Vacation 1973 ~ A Wander in Hamilton & A Drive East Past The Bus Garage
Hamilton in 1973 - A walk around Reid & Queen Streets- Bobby in the Birdcage, The Annex, Rolex at Crisson Jewelers, City Hall with fountains (unfortunately & unnecessarily filled in)... its a windy day!
Then a drive East out of the city. past the bus garage and its row of pink buses. The bus garage was relocated to Devonshire in the 1980s and is now part of an expanded East Broadway.

A drive down Pitts Bay Road and on to Front Street. Taken from dash of a KW T800 You can see the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel on the right, and later on a cruise ship and WPC directing traffic from the Bird Cage
Bermuda Vacation 1967/68 ~ 2 Bases, The Gunpowder Cavern and a Drive Through Hamilton
Overlooking a water catch on Kindley Air Force Base a plane lands on the short runway on Castle Harbour then its on to the top of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse. Great views of the Great Sound and the Naval Operating Base and the NASA tracking station on Tudor Hill. Lots of open space in Southampton, the Southampton Princess Hotel has not been built yet.
A photo op in Flatts, current is moving fast and the Coral Island Hotel (now St. James Place condominiums).
A visit to the US Naval Station (N.O.B), the Headquarters building and a NATO squadron of US Navy ships are docked. Water skiing and a Kitson Cruise boat in the Little Sound.
A relatively new Carlton Beach Club and Sinky Bay (later Sonesta Beach, then a Wyndham, now demolished and now fortunately back to nature as the Hamilton Princess Beach Club).
A glimpse of the Castle Harbour Golf Course, then its a drive on Harbour Road, past the Inverurie Hotel (demolished), a Gardner with machete in danger of getting smushed trimming the hedge opposite Cedar Lodge and a dark drive through Crow Lane, the bus garage and up Reid Street.
Mobylettes parked on Front Street outside of The Penthouse restaurant then a drive past the Birdcage and Pitts Bay Road to Waterloo House (demolished). Cut to Queen Street, heavy traffic and no crash helmets. A pink bus is outside City Hall then its on to the US Kindley Field Air Force Base, past the guard and a stop at the parking lot in front of VP-45 Pelican House at the Navy Squadron barracks.
A stop outside the Gunpowder Cavern (Tavern) then on to Coot Pond past the pink Cafe Glad with its bottle cap Pepsi Cola sign. A wander around Fort St. Catherine and a brief stop at another fort (Victoria?).
Departure at the Bermuda Air Terminal, a BOAC 707 take off and a DC-6? is parked....
Bermuda Cruise 1930s - The Rooftops of Hamilton & The Rattle and Shake Train
Cruise into Hamilton harbor and docking at Front Street. Boat is assumed The Monarch of Bermuda and note you can see the Bermudiana hotel gardens and Par-la-ville train tunnel from the bow of the ship.
Sights around town, lots of horse and carriages: H A & E Smith on Queen Street, police directing traffic pre- Birdcage, a Spurlings Freight Service Buggy, Walker Arcade, Apothecarys' Hall, The Hamilton Hotel, Triminghams, Furness Bermuda Line, and the train makes an appearance at 3.19.
Front Street docks from the boat, cruising out of Hamilton past the Hamilton Princess Hotel & Widdrington. The sail boat at 4.52 has been identified at Dainty which was built at Salt Kettle and then rafting up with the tender Mid Ocean.
Bermuda Vacation 1956 ~ Castle Harbour Swim, St Georges, Hamilton & The Lady Who Loves The Camera
A very fashionable lady, having a great time, who loves the camera!
Swimming in the Castle Harbour Hotel pool (unusually clear water!) with friends and some exterior views shot from the Hotel. Lots of fun shadebrellas up outside in the empty courtyard then its having a little too much fun applying suntan lotion on Windsor Beach.
The mandatory stop at the Aquarium on the way to St. Georges.
A wander around Town Square then friends arrive on mopeds and do a circle around the Cenotaph.
Front Street, Hamilton - some glamour poses in front of the harbor then its an introduction to a local passing by. A Bobby in the Birdcage directing traffic then its a stop in Par-La-Ville park with the days haul of shopping. Back at the beach, and some horsing around... Views of Castle Harbour and a wave goodbye.

Leaving the West Side of Manhattan from the 57th street pier.
Scenes on deck and arrival in Bermuda, Dockyard and a submarine underway in the Great Sound. Past The Hamilton Princess Hotel, The Bermudiana Hotel and docking on Front Street past The Queen of Bermuda.
Bananas, flowers views of the back of Hamilton, Saltus Grammar School, St. Johns Church & Bernard's Park. Then on to North Shore, the Ducking Stool, Flatts inlet and the mandatory stop at The Aquarium.
Picking Easter Lilies on Middle Road, Devonshire? (Can anyone identify the house?). Riding past the old Astor estate at Ferry Reach, fishing at Devils Hole – lots of turtles. Peppercorn Ceremony in St. Georges Town Square. Bermuda Regiment marching band, the Town Crier, the Mayor and the Governor, The Rt. Hon. Lord Martonmere, who leaves with his peppercorn. A stop in Somers Gardens.
Back in Hamilton, police directing traffic in The Birdcage then on a cruise, past Denslow’s Island, the Lantana Cottage Colony (now demolished) & Somerset Drawbridge. Back into Hamilton, at the bow of The Queen of Bermuda…

Bermuda Vacation 1964 ~ Lantana, St George Hotel, Unfinished Church & Easter Floral Parade
A quick view of the Pomander road shoreline and the liners Queen of Bermuda and the Argentina docked in Hamilton.
Blacksmiths Hill in St. Georges, The St. George Hotel front and stairs, Ocean Monarch at Dock, Kings Square, an Austin Cambridge and Ford Prefect are parked on Water Street. Outside of the Unfinished Church then a stop at The Gunpowder Cavern. Somers garden with lots of flowers in bloom (note the boxes next to the park benches - ashtrays?).
Bobby directing traffic on Front Street in The Birdcage, a Salisbury construction truck passes and a Velosolex is about to go up Queen Street.
Cruise to Somerset past the Bermudiana and Hamilton Princess Hotels, Lantana and the La Plage Restaurant (what a wonderful place it was) then a quick view of the ship Argentina being pushed from dock by a tug.
A quick look above the Shell gas station on East Broadway, a field of lilly's and spring flowers then the front of the Hamilton Princess.
Easter parade shot on Queen Street: Bermuda Cadet Pipe and Drum band, the Esso Steel Drum Band, an Asian Dragon and an enormous face that would likely not be appropriate today! Police on bikes, a pipe band, HMS Decoy and the majorettes.

Leaving Furness Lines NYC pier, LOTS of people seeing the Queen of Bermuda off. West side of Manhattan, Cunard Line pier, United States Lines pier – cruise down the Hudson, Statue of Liberty and off to Bermuda.

Arrival at Bermuda – North Shore to Hamilton Harbor. Docking on Front Street, Goslings Brothers porch being replaced – no birdcage – Wadsons, The Smoke Shop Ltd & Pearman Watlington from the ship.

Queen of Bermuda at dock, lower Hamilton Harbor from the water. Old Bank of Bermuda, Alboys Point. Front Street, Police directing traffic under an umbrella. Cruise to St. Georges – From water, Princess Hotel, Inverurie Hotel, Belmont Hotel, Denslows Island, Government House, a Kitson Cruise boat, The Royal Yacht Britannia (was on Island as escort for a 2 day visit by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, by himself, for a 2-day visit for the 350th anniversary of the founding of Bermuda by Admiral Sir George Somers in 1609). Fort St. Catherine, St. Georges Harbor, The St. George Hotel, Canadian ship 180, UK Frigate HMS St. Albans F83.
St. Georges Town Square, Prince Phillip and Governor Woodall? Arrive on the cruise boat “Duchess” to inspect the troops of The Bermuda Regiment & Peppercorn Ceremony? with Lt Colonel Brownlow Tucker holding the sword.They leave in the limo and the Bermuda Regiment marching band end the ceremony.

Back on Hamilton Harbor, long cruise along Paget, Warwick shoreline to Somerset drawbridge. Luders 16? sailboat race in the Great Sound, through Watford Bridge. Somerset Village, Mangrove Bay. Back to Hamilton, Spanish Tallship “the Juan Sebastian De Elcano” at anchor.
The boat at 20:38 has been identified as 56 ft Elco, USAF Q-24, later sold to Herbie Beirman and re-named Suzie-Q. Last named Party boat, before dying on the hard at Mills Creek.
A walk in the gardens of Palm Grove, South Shore. Lots of flowers, Moongate walk & Wishing Well.
“Fishing” in Devils Hole, Natural Arches, South Shore Tuckers Town (destroyed--by Hurricane Fabian in September, 2003), the Mid Ocean Club.
Back in St. Georges, St. Peter’s Church (Sunday, May 3rd) & streets around town. The stocks & cenotaph. Fort St. Catherine and the mandatory stop at the aquarium.
Back on Hamilton Harbor, tall ship now at dock and a visit on the ship.

Bermuda Vacation 1960 ~ East By Road & West By Sea... Through the Swing bridge!
Staying at the Castle Harbour Hotel, this 1960 vacation starts in the garden and moves to Front Street - no Birdcage or helmets. Views from Hotel, pool & Castle Harbor. Golf and hotel grounds.
Great drive to Tom Moore's jungle, a stop in the parking lot and a look at Walsingham Bay. In the parking lot there is a black and a red Cyrus Standard with dual seat, cut fenders and Continental whitewall tyres (thanks Maurice).
The mandatory stop at the Aquarium penguins.
Boat cruise to Hamilton - leave hotel dock enjoying a cigar above deck and through the causeway swing bridge which is working that day! Past Martello Tower then offshore the NOB with Martin Mariner Flying Boats on dock and in the water. A cruise around the Great Sound with lunch (yummy reheated? fries) past the old Inverurie Hotel and a glimpse of the Queen of Bermuda at dock in Hamilton.
Views of St. Georges harbor from the balcony of the St. George Hotel and down the steps for a walk around the old town.
A quick visit to Windsor Beach in Tuckers Town and the back at the Hotel leaving on Mobylette's.
Some feedback from Tom Zimmerman about the MG Roadster in St. Georges Square: I was surprised to see the MG as it is the new Mark II with inset grille. I was in two Chesterfield (Liggett&Myers) cigarette TV commercials filmed in May/June 1960. The one had a sports car rally theme, A black MG Mark II and a red Austin Healey 3000 (both left hand drive) were brought in for the filming. I drove the the Healey and being red got the most screen time. I was wondering if the MG and Healey were eventually sold in Bermuda? The other commercial was horseback riding on the beach.

Gardens & views at Belmont Manor, exterior of hotel and cedars. Buggy at the front entrance. A quick stop at the beach then on the water in Hamilton Harbor. Ferry ride to Hamilton and a stop at the Sessions House.

Seaplane passes bow while docking: From Tom Singfield, author of Wings over Bermuda - 100 years of aviation in the West Atlantic by Ewan Partridge and Tom Singfield – The plane is “a Luscombe VR-BAE. This was one of the two original Luscombe floatplanes that came to Bermuda in 1940 and flew as trainers with the Bermuda Flying School carrying US registration numbers. After the BFS closed, NC28476 was registered VR-BAE in August 1943 and when Hugh Watlington started Bermuda Air Tours in September 1949 he bought VR-BAE and the aircraft seen later (at 10:40), The Aeronca 15AC VR-BAF. VR-BAE was destroyed in a mid-air collision with Luscombe VR-BAH on 9th December 1953. The Aeronca was sold in Canada in 1956”.

Ship believed to be the SS Statendam. Taxi tour with stops at Elbow Beach, Whaler Inn at Whale Bay, carpet of flowers at Waterlot Inn's gardens & a quick glimpse of the Southampton Princess drive.
A walk around Hamilton - Pitts Bay & Bermudiana Road area is busy - oleander, Waterloo House, Kitson Cruise boat, horse & carriages and the Birdcage, Smiths & Triminghams.

Arrival over Bermuda then a stop at the Elbow Beach Hotel on South Shore – on the patio where the Café Lido complex is now. An active quarry (now Quarry Hill in Warwick – not much left.)
Rough seas on South Shore, a stop at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse than on to Somerset with stops at Ely’s Harbor, St. James Church and a quick glimpse of a horse and cart from a taxi. A stop outside of the Irish Linen Shop’s original location in Somerset Village.
A flying boat sighting, boat races in the sound and a quick view of Hamilton across the harbor (Bermuda Fire & Marine Insurance headquarters under construction). Lower ferry arriving.
