Places to see in ( Newcastle upon Tyne - UK )
Newcastle upon Tyne is a university city on the River Tyne in northeast England. With its twin city, Gateshead, it was a major shipbuilding and manufacturing hub during the Industrial Revolution and is now a centre of business, arts and sciences. Spanning the Tyne, modern Gateshead Millennium Bridge, noted for its unique tilting aperture, is a symbol of the 2 cities.
Newcastle upon Tyne commonly known as Newcastle, is a city in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 103 miles (166 km) south of Edinburgh and 277 miles (446 km) north of London on the northern bank of the River Tyne, 8.5 mi (13.7 km) from the North Sea. Newcastle is the most populous city in the North East, and forms the core of the Tyneside conurbation, the eighth most populous urban area in the United Kingdom. Newcastle is a member of the English Core Cities Group and is a member of the Eurocities network of European cities. Newcastle was part of the county of Northumberland until 1400, when it became a county of itself, a status it retained until becoming part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. The regional nickname and dialect for people from Newcastle and the surrounding area is Geordie. Newcastle also houses Newcastle University, a member of the Russell Group, as well as Northumbria University.
The city of Newcastle upon Tyne developed around the Roman settlement Pons Aelius and was named after the castle built in 1080 by Robert Curthose, William the Conqueror's eldest son. The city grew as an important centre for the wool trade in the 14th century, and later became a major coal mining area. The port developed in the 16th century and, along with the shipyards lower down the River Tyne, was amongst the world's largest shipbuilding and ship-repairing centres. Newcastle's economy includes corporate headquarters, learning, digital technology, retail, tourism and cultural centres, from which the city contributes £13 billion towards the United Kingdom's GVA. Among its icons are Newcastle United football club and the Tyne Bridge. Since 1981 the city has hosted the Great North Run, a half marathon which attracts over 57,000 runners each year.
Newcastle International Airport is located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) from the city centre on the northern outskirts of the city near Ponteland . Newcastle railway station, also known as Newcastle Central Station, is a principal stop on the East Coast Main Line and Cross Country Route. Central Station is one of the busiest stations in Britain. The city is served by the Tyne and Wear Metro, a system of suburban and underground railways covering much of Tyne and Wear. Major roads in the area include the A1 (Gateshead Newcastle Western Bypass), stretching north to Edinburgh and south to London; the A19 heading south past Sunderland and Middlesbrough to York and Doncaster; the A69 heading west to Carlisle; the A696, which becomes the A68 heads past Newcastle Airport. Newcastle is accessible by several mostly traffic-free cycle routes that lead to the edges of the city centre. here are 3 main bus companies providing services in the city; Arriva North East, Go North East and Stagecoach North East.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne a lovely Geordie city with a rich history - 3 nights
November 2017 - We spent 3 nights in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the Royal Station Hotel which was a bit noisy with trains at the back and the lively street of Newcastle in the front. Arriving on the train on Friday we headed to the Discovery Museum for the complete history of Newcastle. Saturday morning we went to the Cathedral Church of St Nicholas hoping for breakfast in their “Dog Leap” cafe but it was closed so we went to Café Rouge on the fine Grey Street instead. We then toured Grainger town’s Central Arcade, Grainger Market, the site if the old Bigg Market and the very new Eldon Square shopping centre. On then to the Laing Gallery which was hosting a Paul Nash exhibition. After lunch at the City Tavern we went to the Great North Museum at Hancock which educated us on Hadrian’s wall which was a much bigger deal than we had thought. We had a look at the Pioneers of Pop artwork at the Hatton Gallery, past St James Park football ground to China Town and along the largest remaining section of the city wall. After breakfast at Browns in Grey Street we walked to the Ouseburn district for an interesting tour of the Victoria tunnel by a couple of local Geordies who had some amusing stories to tell. We stopped at The Biscuit Factory art gallery on our way to the Millennium bridge and the quayside market. Over the bridge we called in at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts, walked down the Gateshead side of the Tyne river, crossing at the Swing Bridge and along the new developments beside the river. The last day started with a visit to the castle through Blackgate where we listened to the splendid Geordie song Bladon Races sung in a broad Geordie accent (sub titles included). You get to the castle keep under the railway that splits the site in two. From the top of the keep there is a splendid view of the city and the building has some very interesting history. Our trip ended with a visit to the Bessie Surtee house, a restored 17th century merchant’s house.

Newcastle Nestle factory where 110 jobs will be cut - Daily Mail
Nestle is planning to cut almost 300 British jobs and move production of the Blue Riband chocolate biscuit to Poland due to Brexit. The confectionery giant is making redundancies at factories in York, Newcastle, Halifax and Girvan in Scotland to make them more 'efficient and competitive'. Nestle has not explicitly said the move is due to Brexit uncertainty but an industry source told MailOnline: 'They have have made the move because import costs have risen by 15 per cent due to the devaluation of the pound in the wake of the referendum.'

History
According to local tradition, some time shortly after the Norman conquest there occurred in the valley of the Ouse an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It seems reasonable to suppose that the Virgin was beheld with the infant Christ, because up until that time Jesmond had been known as Gese Muth the mouth of the Ouse while afterwards the name was popularly interpreted as the hill of Jesus, or Jesus Mound. The ruins of St Mary’s Chapel, first recorded in 1272, are in Jesmond Dene[1] on the west side of the valley.
A trace of the processions to the shrine which occurred during the Middle Ages is found in the name of that section of the former Great North Road running north of the Tyne called Pilgrim Street. During a period in which the shrine was in need of repair it was endowed with indulgences by a rescript or edict of Pope Martin V on certain feasts of the liturgical year. A spring known as St Mary’s Well of uncertain date may also be found near to the chapel. It has the word Gratia inscribed upon the stone above it. The greater part of the history of the shrine, its origins and the miracles which were said to have occurred there, were lost in the 16th century when the chapel was suppressed in the Reformation and fell into ruin. The ruin and its grounds later passed through various owners (one of whom tried to turn the well into a bathing pool). It was acquired by Lord Armstrong in the 19th century and given by him to the City of Newcastle. Mass is now offered there on occasion by the local Roman Catholic priest and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. Flowers along with letters and candles are often left in the ruins by pilgrims and others. A booklet outlining the surviving history of the chapel may be obtained from the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Name on North Jesmond Avenue.
The Beatles began writing their second hit single She Loves You in the Imperial Hotel in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne on 27 June 1963.
Areas of Jesmond
St George's Terrace, in Jesmond's commercial area
The area is notable for Jesmond Parish Church, Holy Trinity Church, Jesmond Dene woodland and the Royal Grammar School. The area's principal commercial area forms around Osborne Road, Acorn Road and St George's Terrace, the former being dominated by hotels and bars, and the latter by shops and cafes.
Newcastle City Council has designated [3] three conservation areas within Jesmond; Brandling Village, South Jesmond and Jesmond Dene.
The Mansion House was owned by a wealthy industrialist Arthur Sutherland, 1st Baronet, and is one of the most impressive residential properties in Jesmond. Built in 1887, the property was donated to the city by Sutherland in 1953 and is now the official residence of the Lord Mayor and can be used for private events.[4] The house, situated in the centre of Jesmond previously sat in 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land. One acre of the land including previous stables were sold as a private property, now owned by relatives of Arthur Sutherland.
Along with Leeds and Belfast, Newcastle is experiencing studentification. Jesmond is a popular residential area for students attending Newcastle University and Northumbria University. Osborne Road in Jesmond has a strong student population with a selection of student bars, restaurants and housing.[6]
Newcastle Cricket Club plays its home games at Osborne Avenue, which is also a home venue for Northumberland County Cricket Club. The cricket club is currently on a 50-year lease to Newcastle Royal Grammar School. The Jesmond Lawn Tennis club is also popular for socialising.
Jesmond is one of the 26 areas in England to have a real tennis club which is used to hold events.

Biscuit Factory: Vibe Gallery Ltd
The Vibe Gallery mixes art, design and creativity in one space.
The Biscuit Factory is part of Tower Bridge Business Complex and consists of a collection of buildings that began in the Victorian age when this area first developed as a major centre for food production. Today, a collection of buildings - many having great character - have been tastefully converted to suit media-style businesses seeking a central London location but offered at a fraction of the cost of the nearby city, west end or Canary Wharf districts.
Biscuit Factory wedding video teaser
A short wedding video teaser absolute media weddings produced for a client who tied the knot at the amazing biscuit factory situated in newcastle, tyne and wear.
There is one thing with British weddings that you will never be able to control and that is of course, the weather. Be it August or December you can never guarantee what it'll be and so rain or shine, you take what you get and make it work, and that is exactly what Katherine & Tony did. The weather may not have been ideal but they were defiantly not letting that effect their day. And what a day it was.
When i arrived in the morning there was a full house, with 4 bridesmaids, 3 flower girls and a page boy you would expect utter chaos but everything was very calm, the whole party, especially Katherine were relaxed and happily enjoying themselves. This vibe continued throughout the whole day.
It was my first time filming at The Biscuit Factory, and both the Gallery, where the ceremony was held, and the new Biscuit Room were fantastic and very visually effective. The Biscuit Room is a great size and with the K & T lights positioned on the stage behind the cake in pride of place, it really had that WOW factor as you walked in. We also got to venture into the Gallery with the photographer after closing, which was brilliant.
The evening brought live music from Red Wings, who really got the whole crowd going, bringing some great dancers up the the floor; no doubt you'll see some of that in the highlights montage. You could tell that everyone there was having a fabulous time and were all set to party well into the night.
Most importantly Katherine & Tony seemed to be having a brilliant day and it really is wonderful to play a small part in such happiness.
