Don Asher's Jazz Worcester by Chet Williamson
Pianist and novelist Don Asher grew up in Worcester, MA. He was born Donald Joseph Asher on March 7, 1926. As a teenager, he studied piano with the late great Jaki Byard, with whom he maintained a lifelong friendship. Asher's first gig was at the Sundome Café on Harding Street. He was paid $1.50 for the night's work.
He left town in 1959 and settled in San Francisco where he became house pianist at the Hungry I where he backed up up such fledgling future stars as Maya Angelou, Woody Allen and a then 19 year-old Barbra Streisand.
Asher established a long career as a working pianist in the Bay area, playing such prestigious rooms as the Huntington, the Casablanca, and the Café Majestic.
As a writer he published nine novels, a memoir and numerous magazine articles. He was a winner of the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for Raise Up Off Me: A Portrait of Hampton Hawes.
In 2000, I visited Asher at his home at 46 Ord Court in San Francisco and took some notes on my visit. He was a small man, maybe five two. At the time, he appeared to be in his '70s, still spry and in good spirits. He was basically writing during the day and playing piano in hotels at night.
He was warm and very welcoming. He lived on the second floor of an apartment house that looked like a scene out of Hitchcock's Vertigo. The view from the back porch looked out to the bay. Peering down you could see a beautiful garden with lemon trees and a lily pad pond with shiny gold fish flickering in the sunlight.
You don't see sights like this on Bancroft Hill now do you? Asher cracked.
A grand piano filled the living room of his small apartment and it was surrounded by books. At one point he sat down and played It Might as Well be Spring before segueing into Polka Dots and Moonbeams. He talked about seeing Art Tatum, taking lessons with Jaki Byard and writing the book on Hampton Hawes.
He made it a point to show me a few substitute chord changes that Byard played on Out of Nowhere. Jaki said there are four different ways to get from one chord to another, Asher recalled.
He talked about how he remembered musicians from the neighborhood in Worcester, sharing info on how Byard would lock the door of the Saxtrum Club after everybody left and play all night. In the morning there would be a pile of cigarette butts crushed on the floor and Coca-Cola bottles strewn about. In the morning he would hustle off to school after staying up all night practicing.
We spoke of writing and music and his life back in New England. I asked him about Reggie Walley. He laughed when I reminded him about how the former hoofer used to dance with a table in his teeth. Asher then wrote the memory down as if he planned on using it in a story someday.
He mentioned how he once dated a Miss Maine before his friend, Emil Haddad, quote: stole her away. He also mentioned Pete Clemente, Paul Gervais, George Gregory, Perry Conte, and a guitarist by the name of Leo Waterman that supposedly showed Jaki some hip new chord changes.
He pointed out how Worcester used to be divided along ethnic and racial lines. He talked about how if a black man walked down the street in the 1940s people would say, It's getting dark out.
He reminisced about Shrewsbury Street Clubs, Front and Franklin Street clubs. I mentioned a few pieces of his that I'd seen in Harpers and Oxford American, one in particular where he talks about a band of his The Sharps and Flats playing at a club on Summer Street. Their first set consisted of Georgia, When it's Sleepy Time Down South, Basin Street Blues, until one unsatisfied customer yelled out, Hey, can you play something north of the Mason-Dixon Line?
Asher also commented on his writing style: Technology has passed me by, he said. I use a typewriter, but I still write with a pencil and paper.
Before heading out into the Frisco streets, he thanked me for stopping by and wished me well.
Asher died on August 25, 2010.

Charleston Dancing Pier to Pier
MyCharleston dancers are toe tapping their way around some of the south coast’s most iconic landmarks
MyCharleston, showcases their students dance talents in a new video entitled ‘Charleston Dancing Pier to Pier’ which brings together dancers on their local piers in Brighton & Hove, Portsmouth, Worthing and Isle of Wight.
MyCharleston co-founder, Elena Collins says ‘Pier to Pier is a celebration of the beautiful places we teach in and the vibrant people that live there. We wanted to show-off these stunning grade listed piers which are on our doorsteps and demonstrate the towns are dynamic places full of talent.’
The film includes Brighton Palace Pier, Worthing Pier, South Parade Pier in Portsmouth which reopened in 2017, Sandown Pier on the Isle of Wight plus a dance around the twenty-four cast-iron columns now standing by the British Airways i360, which were originally part of the substructure of the West Pier in Hove. The West Pier, is the most at risk Grade Ⅰ listed building in the UK but it’s still the most photographed location in the city.
