Celebrate Bluecoat’s 300th anniversary throughout 2017. We’re the oldest arts centre in the UK, dating back to 1907. We continue to show groundbreaking contemporary art and nurture artistic talent to this day, as Liverpool’s centre for the contemporary arts.
A major project as part of our 300th anniversary will be #MyBluecoat. This will bring alive the building’s history by combining visitors’ memories with existing archives in a brand new website, and we want to hear from you.

Albert Dock
A complex of dock buildings and warehouses. Opened in 1846. Was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood. Was the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
The Beatles Story
A visitor attraction dedicated to the 1960s rock group The Beatles. Exhibits include: an audio guide in ten languages, narrated by John Lennon's sister Julia, John Lennon's round spectacles, George Harrison's first guitar, a blue White Album signed by Paul McCartney.
Metropolitan Cathedral
The seat of the Archbishop of Liverpool and the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool. Construction began in 1962 and took five years. Known locally as Paddy's Wigwam or the Mersey Funnel. The cathedral's architect, Frederick Gibberd, was the winner of a worldwide design competition.
World Museum
A large museum. Has extensive collections covering archaeology, ethnology and the natural and physical sciences. Special attractions include the Natural History Centre and a free Planetarium. Entry to the museum itself is also free.
Anfield
A football stadium. Has a seating capacity of 45,276. Has been the home of Liverpool F.C. since their formation in 1892. It was originally the home of Everton F.C. from 1884 to 1891, before they moved to Goodison Park after a dispute over rent.
Newsham Park
A 121 acres (49 ha) Victorian park that was opened in 1868. Facilities and attractions: Newsham House, where Queen Victoria once stayed, fishing lakes with roach, carp and tench, children's play area, Lakeview Kiosk, Seamen’s Orphan Institution.
Superlambanana
A bright yellow sculpture. Weighing almost eight tons and standing at 17 feet tall, it is intended to be a cross between a banana and a lamb. Designed by Manhattan-based Japanese artist Taro Chiezo.
Commander-in-Chief, Western Approaches
Was the commander of a major operational command of the Royal Navy during World War II. The admiral commanding, and his forces, sometimes informally known as 'Western Approaches Command,' were responsible for the safety of British shipping in the Western Approaches.
Bluecoat Chambers
The oldest surviving building in central Liverpool. Built in 1716-17 as a charity school. Built in brick with painted stone dressings and a slate roof. H-shaped in plan.
Crosby Beach
A beach which is part of the Merseyside coastline. Stretches about 3 miles from the Seaforth Dock, through Waterloo, where it separates the sea from the Marina, past Crosby Swimming Baths, up beyond the coastguard station in Blundellsands to the estuary of the River Alt.

Liverpool is a maritime city in northwest England, where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea. A key trade and migration port from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, it's also, famously, the hometown of The Beatles. Ferries cruise the waterfront, where the iconic mercantile buildings known as the Three Graces – Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building – stand on the Pier Head. The local authority is Liverpool City Council, the most populous local government district within the metropolitan county of Merseyside and the largest within the Liverpool City Region. Liverpool historically lay within the ancient hundred of West Derby in the south west of the county of Lancashire. It became a borough in 1207 and a city in 1880. In 1889, Liverpool became a county borough independent of Lancashire.
Liverpool sits on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary and its growth as a major port was paralleled by the expansion of the city throughout the Industrial Revolution. The city of Liverpool celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2007, and was European Capital of Culture together with Stavanger, Norway, in 2008. Several areas of the city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2004. The Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City includes the Pier Head, Albert Dock, and William Brown Street.
The popularity of The Beatles and other groups from the Merseybeat era contributes to Liverpool's status as a tourist destination. Liverpool is also the home of two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool and Everton, matches between the two being known as the Merseyside derby. The city's namesake club is the sole British club to win five European Cups. The world-famous Grand National horse race takes place annually at Aintree Racecourse on the outskirts of the city. Liverpool's status as a port city has contributed to its diverse population, which, historically, was drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly from Ireland and Wales. The city is also home to the oldest Black African community in the country and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.
Transport in Liverpool is primarily centred on the city's road and rail networks, both of which are extensive and provide links across the United Kingdom. As a major city, Liverpool has direct road links with many other areas within England. To the east, the M62 motorway connects Liverpool with Hull and along the route provides links to several large cities, including Manchester, Leeds and Bradford. Liverpool is served by two separate rail networks. The local rail network is managed and run by Merseyrail and provides links throughout Merseyside and beyond (see Local Travel below), while the national network, which is managed by Network Rail, provides Liverpool with connections to major towns and cities across the England. The Rise of Liverpool (Documentary, 1935)
A short, silent documentary about the city of Liverpool. Made in 1935 by members of the Sandon Studios Society and MFI, it includes footage of the city centre, various modes of transport, shipping along the docks, dredging the Mersey, the old customs house, construction of the Anglican Cathedral and the newly opened Queensway Tunnel.
The Sandon Society were an artistic group founded in 1905 and based out of Bluecoat Chambers (shown at 5:39). In 1911 the group hosted one of the earliest exhibitions of post-impressionist paintings in the UK, which included works by Picasso, Gauguin, van Gogh, Matisse and Cezanne. Influential members included Augustus John, James Hamilton Hay, Fanny Dove Lister, Edward Carter Preston and Tyson Smith. The people who made this film are unknown.

Liverpool - The Blue Coat School Willis Organ Journey
A nostalgic day for me on Friday returning to my home town in Liverpool. Our Shires Casey and Bernie transporting the organ pipes from the Henry Willis & Sons organ for the Blue Coat School. The organ has recently been re-furbished thanks to Lottery Funding.
The journey was a recreation of the route taken in1906 when the organ was moved from the original 1717 Blue Coat School building to their new premises in Wavertree.
Thanks to Peter Elson of Blue Coat School for organising the event and to Liverpool City Council for their assistance in making the event possible.
I never thought when being brought up in Liverpool in the 1960’ that I would one day be driving a pair of Shires through the City Centre.

Hey Jude topped the charts in Britain for two weeks and for 9 weeks in America, where it became The Beatles longest-running No.1 in the US singles chart as well as the single with the longest running time.
The Beatles did not record their promotional film until Hey Jude had been on sale in America for a week. They returned to Twickenham Film Studio, using director Michael Lindsay-Hogg who had worked with them on Paperback Writer and Rain. Earlier still, Lindsay-Hogg had directed episodes of Ready Steady Go! And a few months after the film for Hey Jude he made The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus TV special that featured John and Yoko but wouldn’t be shown until 1996
To help with the filming an audience of around 300 local people, as well as some of the fans that gathered regularly outside Abbey Road Studios were brought in for the song’s finale. Their presence had an unlikely upside for The Beatles in their long-running saga with the Musicians’ Union in that the MU were fooled into believing the band were playing live, when in fact they were miming for the vast majority of the song. Paul, however, sang live throughout the song.
The video was first broadcast on David Frost’s Frost On Sunday show, four days after it was filmed. At that point transmission was in black and white although the promo was originally shot in colour. It was first aired in America a month later on 6 October 1968, on The Smotheres Brothers Comedy Hour.

There are three members of Pecha Kucha, a fourth musician, a guest is added to deliver the quartet, and provide change and chance. Pecha Kucha's mother tongue is steeped in free improvisation, with a nod towards a contemporary classic aesthetic.
The three resident members have been active in the northern (England) free improvised music circuit for 10 years including Frakture. All members have played in Europe too, and during their time abroad and in the UK they have played with some of the top names in free improvisation.
STEVE BOYLAND is one of the UK's busiest and most accomplished improvising vocalists. His reputation is founded on the intensity and eclecticism of his solo work, as well as a growing portfolio of collaborations with international practitioners from the fields of improvised music, visual arts and dance.
In 2008, in recognition of these achievements, the singer was commissioned to create an improvised performance at the Rathaus, Cologne to mark the official launch of Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture. Recent projects have included solo performances in Germany, Switzerland, Portugal and Austria, as well as collaborations with Berlin guitarist, CASPAR BROETZMANN and Cologne-based, TANZTHEATER 687; duo appearances with vocalist, MAGGIE NICOLS at Serralves em Festa and Happenstance ; and the debut performance of the newly-formed vocal trio, BOYLAND/MINTON/NICOLS, at RawRoarRare.
Future projects will see Steve Boyland perform 'Cor Inquietum', a series of improvised solo meditations , at the Sense of Sound-curated festival, Voices 2012, where the singer will also hold the post of Vocal Artist-in-Residence. 2012 will also see the launch of a duo project with pianist VERYAN WESTON, based on the verse of American poet, Theodore Roethke.
