Vicky Aram was born into the middle of the Great Depression in the 1930s, in a close-knit mining district in England's North East. In her print debut, Vicky escorts us on her journey from an atypically bohemian Northern Catholic environment to the Mayfair clubs of the 1970s, via self-discovery as an illustrator and fashionista.
Vicky's father -- a dancer, theatre manager and sometime optician, and stylish mother -- clad in veiled hats, feathers and fur -- nurtured her creativity with piano lessons, which soon led to her recitals on the church organ. As the 1950s dawned, Vicky travelled to Sunderland to attend Art College and, inevitably, to learn to smoke -- with style. Soon came the inevitable move south, to London, lodging at the YWCA in Bloomsbury with full board for £3 a week. She fell in with the creative set and landed a job as a fashion illustrator, illuminating pieces for magazines and the Daily Telegraph, attending all the couture shows, and becoming a part of the fabric of Soho.
Always open to new adventures, Vicky met the extraordinary person who became her husband in the late 1950s. The freedom they afforded each other ensured that they were never thwarted in their ambition, be it his career in architecture or her burgeoning musical gifts. Vicky designed a collection for Harvey Nichols' 21 boutique; his various homes featured in colour supplement style spreads. Following a brief interlude in Yorkshire, and the blessing of three children, they returned to London in time for the nascent 1970s and a change of direction.
A chance meeting with an Australian musician opened the door to Vicky establishing herself as a singer and pianist. With a tendency towards jazz, blues and Motown, Vicky spent the next two decades serenading London's elite -- and sometimes less elite -- in Mayfair clubs, West End hotels, restaurants and night spots. Vicky truly is the Nightjar described in these pages -- a bird that sings by night, and sleeps by day -- although family life and keeping a busy home left little time for rest.
The pivotal moment in this book of sketches comes in September 1977. One night, as the summer nears its end, Vicky, the singer at Morton's club in Berkeley Square, finds herself embroiled in one of the 20th Century's most tragic, shocking motor accidents.
In the 1980s, Vicky combines her musical engagements with a little housekeeping and the pleasure of raising her beautiful family. A long residency at The Canteen sees her mixing with the cream of the international jazz and blues scene, including Buddy Tate, Zoot Money, Chet Baker, Carol Grimes, Esther Phillips, Howard McGhee, Eric Burdon, Al & Joe Cohn, and Eddie Cleanhead Vinson.
Later still, Vicky travels back to the North East and is re-acquainted with a long-lost love -- whose story awaits us in the second volume of her memoirs.
Vicky's style is one of brevity, flavoured with an evocative turn of phrase. Ice skates hang on a hook 'glittering like weapons'; her mother 'looked like Coco Chanel' while Marc Bolan 'lay serene and silent, his brilliant green satin jacket catching the light from the slow dawn'.
This slim volume leaves one wanting to know more, to ask a hundred questions; at the same time, it transports you to times of opportunity and notoriety, when creativity abounded and Vicky realised her destiny. She tells us that 'the journey is the thrill and you must never arrive', yet she allows us to share glimpses of that journey -- one of definite accomplishment, love and happiness.

Marcus Wareing's Meat Course - Great British Menu | National Final
Each week on Great British Menu two chefs from a culinary region go head to head, trying to secure a place for their recipes on the Great British Menu. Sourcing the best ingredients from their local area, our chefs each create a starter, a fish course, a meat course and a dessert that they feel epitomises all that's best about their beloved region. At the end of each week the two chefs representing the featured region present their dishes to an expert judging panel who decide which chef's menu goes forward to the national final.

Roman Feast (1961)
Bath, Avon.
M/S of some flaming petrol or fireworks being thrown onto the water of the Roman Baths. Various shots of a Roman Feast that took place to start off a ten-day festival of music and the arts at Bath. The guests are all in Roman dress; some girls in short tabards do a Roman dance; some young 'slave boys' are seen pouring wine at a table; 'slave girls' serve food to guests.
M/S of actor Sir Michael Redgrave in a very ornate Roman costume (presumably he has come as Nero) and make-up as he drinks wine and chats to another Roman. M/S of numerous guests sitting on the stones around the water. Various shots of a slave girl on a little raft on the water; as she drifts past some men she gives them some grapes, popping one in her mouth first, the saucy vixen; some girls in the background play recorders as a man tilts his head back to eat from a bunch of grapes.
Various shots of a man turning a pig on a spit. High angle L/S of the main bath as slave girls walk through the water to take food to the guests from a small boat in the centre. We see a roast boar being carved; a roast swan on a plate is carried by a slave girl. Various shots of the guests eating with their fingers and drinking.
Note: print used for telecine transfer is quite badly scratched; neg is incomplete. On file is a press release about the Roman Feast; it marked the opening of the Bath Festival of 1961. There is also a news cutting with a picture from the rehearsal.
Cuts exist - see separate record.

Fox hunters' violence towards hunt saboteurs
Jonathan Broise, a violent English fox hunter. During his eight day Crown Court trial for punching and head butting a woman sab, the jury gasped on the first day when they saw it, but Judge Anthony Thorpe worked on them. For example, Broise defence was that he was blinded by a spray and did not punch, although he admitted a fist is seen. He claimed that was an old judo move where he started with a clenched fist, but opened to the palm of his hand to give more power to his push. The injuries the defence suggested could be caused by brambles! On the eighth day, the jury asked to see the video again. Oh one more time said Thorpe, exasperated. Well the jury saw it one more time - but in slow motion. So their final view rather confirmed a forceful push. A picture of a horse with some hair missing was shown to the jury. No provenance to the image. It was suggested that his horse had been sprayed at some time before - the claim was that hunt sabs use sprays that could remove horse hair. This would justify his actions on self defence. The judge said, they say that anything could have caused that, but you can see it had been sprayed. So, British justice for you!
Holiday Pageant - Music for a Yuletide Day - UUSGU Dec. 2006
UUSGU's contribution to the 2006 town-wide holiday festival. Our theme was a Medieval Boar's Head feast with traditional themes and music from England, Ireland and Scotland. Created and directed by Beth and Barry Hall, with help from many others in the choir and congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Grafton and Upton, Massachusetts. The Boar's Head Feast is rooted in ancient times when the boar was sovereign of the forest. A ferocious beast, and menace to humans, it was hunted as a public enemy. Roasted boar was a staple of medieval banquets. As Christian beliefs overtook pagan customs in Europe, the presentation of a boar's head at Christmas came to symbolize the triumph of good over evil. 'Destruction'
East Africa snarls and cowers
Rotting corpses and poppy flowers
Grain pouring in for a fighting population
A one way ticket to desolation
And all that's left is a trail of destruction
Heading for death...and destruction
Villages die, red blood flows
East-West superpower treasuries grow
Expansion of an arms race out of hand
War riddled bullets, scars on the land
They may call protection of interests abroad
But piles of bodies bring no reward
They play military chess
Pain thrives while they care less and less.
