OLD GLORY MOLLY - Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival 2014
The ancient Fenland tradition of plough boys collecting money and gifts in the streets on Plough Tuesday has now evolved into a week-long festival in the market town of Whittlesey, (Whittlesea). On the second Saturday in January each year, a Straw Bear and a couple of smaller bears parade around the market square and streets on a route that encompasses many of the public houses. Numerous and diverse folk dance teams and entertainers fill the streets and vast quantities of drink are consumed, causing many of the eccentric merrymakers to be even more eccentric.

GOOD EASTER MOLLY 1993 Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival Part 1
This is video footage of Good Easter Molly Gang at the Straw bear festival in 1993 digitalised from old VHS recordings. Also includes our detour out to the Dog In a Doublet pub and Clare, the daughter of the lovely family we befriended over the years there, having a dance with us. Clare and her family have continued to support us by coming along to the Ouse washes day of dance and after we were ASBO'd by the jobs worth organisers for dancing in the same spot we'd been dancing in for over 20yrs !! They boycotted the Straw bear festival and have never been back since. A festival which is no longer a Molly Dance festival but more of a folk dance show case day. Twas a great shame, as we have fond memories of it before it became over organised.
