Marina Bathing Pool (Ramsgate, Kent) [1954 / 1957 / 1971]
You may have seen this exact copy of this publicity film uploaded by DAVID CARR who simply downloaded this clip from my channel and re-uploaded it to his own account for his own greed and attention while not accrediting the copyright owner, providing background information or promoting the important work of Screen Archive South East who own and preserve the original film materials.
Carr also passed the clip onto Ramsgate Historical Society where Carr received the credit when the clip was posted onto the society's Facebook page, a credit and appreciation for the hard work of simply stealing the material from my channel.
P.s to reassert the situation here, I have the greatest respect for Ramsgate Historical Society and all the historical societies of our local community not to under-appreciate Terry Wheeler and his work either. I would have gladly given an un-watermarked copy of the bootleg DVD containing the collection of Thanet publicity films (which I had paid a bootlegger to obtain) to the society as a token of gesture. However being bootlegged video and the copyright ownership, it is preferable to contact Screen Archive South East for licensed digital copies of the original 16mm film prints that were donated to the archive by Thanet District Council who incidentally are the copyright holder, not me or David Carr.
In light of this, I am sorry that I am now forced to make use of intrusive watermarks and/or my burnt-in timecode ticker to discourage those who chose to do this with future materials I may or may not make available.
Now to the clip itself with the background info which Carr has failed to provide:
A short sequence featuring Ramsgate's former Marina
Bathing Pool in the East Cliff.
Edited together from 3 Ramsgate promotional films - 'a Holiday to Jump at' (1954), 'At a Sign of the Ram and Gate' (1957) and 'Ramsgate: a Picture to Remember' (1971).
Notice that by 1957, the former boating pool at the rear of the site had already been drained. Originally there was also a light railway around the edge of the site leading to the former Ramsgate Sands station. It had a short life, perhaps due to it's location on top of the sea.
Much like Thanet's many former tourist facilities, the pool is now a car park. Originally filled in, partially demolished and left to rot. A sudden wave of funding passed through Thanet District Council in 1998 and down went the lot including the adjacent nightclub, Nero's - a historical building that was formerly a theatre / cinema and music hall.
The 1908 Messr Waygood lift, perhaps Ramsgate's finest out of the 3, seen here in 1957 was demolished for no apparent reason in 1970 and replaced by an ugly green box around the former escape ladder. Perhaps Nero's used this with a winch inside for transportation of goods between the promenade and the lower esplanade? Can anyone confirm that?
As of 2010, these sites (in very poor condition) are under consultation and awaiting sale to developers. Good bye to Thanet's tourism history, hello to modern housing development and the subsequent downfall.
As of 2014 the old music hall/Neros outdoor space and arches has been redeveloped into a monstrosity of a residential complex which obscures eyeline of oncoming traffic around the bend of the road (a rumoured reason to why Neros was demolished in the first place). Asking price seems to start at £500,000 per flat - backhanding 3-appeal approved planning.
The old swimming pool site is now proposed / in application for some leisure/recreation but guess what the rest the developer hopes to backhand the planning for...

St Augustines Abbey School Ramsgate Kent England
Music written in occasion of the Old Boys reunion in September 2011 using the Abbey School song. The work is written using musical forms from various periods - starting with modern classical and passing to jazz and finally a contrapuntal Baroque ending. As no copies of the original Abbey School song could be found, even this was written from memory. I am sorry if it does not appeal to all listeners but moving through various musical forms and styles is a recognition of the musical culture given to us by the music director Ian Cox his assistant Keith Cole, and the Rev. Stephen Holford OSB.

In 1998 Ramsgate Pleasurama was totally destroyed by a fire. I filmed this shortly afterwards but it was forgotten about until 2017.

Margate (Kent, UK)
Margate is a seaside town in the district of Thanet in Kent, England. It lies 15 miles (24.1 km) north-east of Canterbury, on the coast along the North Foreland and contains the areas of Cliftonville, Garlinge, Palm Bay and Westbrook.
Margate was recorded as Meregate in 1264 and as Margate in 1299, but the spelling continued to vary into modern times. The name is thought to refer to a pool gate or gap in a cliff where pools of water are found, often allowing swimmers to jump in. The cliffs of the Isle of Thanet are composed of chalk, a fossil-bearing rock.
The town's history is tied closely to the sea and it has a proud maritime tradition. Margate was a limb of Dover in the ancient confederation of the Cinque ports. It was added to the confederation in the 15th century. Margate has been a leading seaside resort for at least 250 years. Like its neighbour Ramsgate, it has been a traditional holiday destination for Londoners drawn to its sandy beaches. Margate had a Victorian pier which was largely destroyed by a storm in 1978.[2]
Like Brighton and Southend, Margate was infamous for gang violence between mods and rockers in the 1960s, and mods and skinheads in the 1980s.[3]
The Turner Contemporary art gallery occupies a prominent position next to the harbour. The Thanet Offshore Wind Project, completed in 2010, is visible from the seafront.
Turner Contemporary museum.
