The night we came to Wigtown (Scotland's famous Book Town)
A song inspired by Shaun Bythell's book THE DIARY OF A BOOKSELLER recounting the various anecdotes and daily chores of running a second hand bookshop.
We feature on June 8th as this was the day we first arrived in Wigtown and stayed with Shaun in his shop after a gig. The song tells you a little more detail on the night than you would find in the book.
Available from your nearest independent bookshop.

The song was commissioned by The Wigtown Book Festival, which runs every year for ten days in Scotland's Book Town for the last week of September and is well worth going to.
LYRICS:
The night we came to Wigtown
Scotland’s (famous) Book Town
Looking for a concert
Well, how else would we find it
We played in the Bookshop
And never wanted to stop
Then came down the teas
And we sold a bunch of CDs
The night we came to Wigtown
Scotland’s (famous) Book Town
Everybody’s in town
Adrian’s up from London
Bottles started opening
Birthday’s we were toasting
A good excuse as any to celebrate....
--------
the night we came to Wigtown
Scotland’s (famous) Book Town
Candles lit for supper
So we headed up the
Stairs to Shaun’s kitchen
Table, we were eating
Out comes the banjo
And H.A. Manhood
Red wine it was flowing
Drinking to the morning
Singing silly songs,
And dancing in our long-johns
Oooh, weee ohhh It feels like home
We don’t want to go
The night we came to Wigtown
Scotland’s (famous) Book Town
While Shaun was snoring
We started exploring
Looking through the books,
HORNEY SHAUN’S SHELF OF PORN, he
Say’s it’s for his punters, but you
Can’t help but wonders
Discovering the train-sets
Underneath the carpets
Harmonies and cartwheels
To beds in pulpits
Stumberling and giggling
Sleeping Shaun is dribbling
Everyone was very wasted
Oooh, weee ohhh......
It was a very fun day
But not wise for a Sunday
We slept in for two days
While Shaun got up on Monday
He opened up the shop
And he wrote in his diary
Some things he forgot
They just slipped out his Memory
Then his book got bought
So now he’s an author
But our entry is too short
And we think we ought to
Explain to everyone
What really went on
While Shaun was asleep, snoring....
he night we came to Wigtown,
Scotland’s famous book town
Now we’ve moved to Wigtown
So we can expose him

My home town of Hay-on-Wye is famous for its secondhand bookshops, but lately there's been a decline in the trade, so I filmed a ten minute documentary to try and explore why this is the case, as part of my uni work.

Island on the Edge, A life on Soay, by Anne Cholawo. (Part 1)
These scenes were filmed on Soay and in the waters around the island.
Music by Opaque Nature.
Island on the Edge, A life on Soay is a book written by Anne Cholawo.
This is the story of Anne Cholawo in her own words, a typical 80's career girl working in a busy London advertising agency, when in 1989, on holiday in Skye, she noticed an advert in an estate agent's window for a property on the nearby island of Soay. Within ten minutes of landing there she had fallen under it's spell and after a few months she moved to Soay to live.
When she arrived on the remote west coast island there were 17 inhabitants. Today there are only three. This book describes Anne's extraordinary transition from a hectic urban lifestyle to one of rural isolation and self-sufficiency, without mains electricity, medical services, shops or any other modern amenities. As well as telling her own story, she introduces some of the colourful characters she has encountered there and describes the history and extraordinary beauty of Soay.

Wigtown Book Festival 2018 Interview with Tom Devine & Ariel Killick
Scotland's pre-eminent historian Sir Tom Devine, University of Edinburgh Professor Emeritus, discusses his latest book, The Scottish Clearances - A History of the Dispossessed, and why out of Scotland's thousands of towns and villages, the village of Shiaba, near Bunessan in South West Mull, is of such significance, that he has described it as the most significant site in the Western Highlands.
Sir Devine has spent significant periods of his life near Shiaba and fought for protected national monument status for the area. Ariel Killick is an Australian-born Gaelic artist based in Glasgow, Co-Founder of Australia's Scots Gaelic Summer Schools, ongoing for over 20 years, and is a direct descendant of the McKechnie's cleared from Shiaba in 1847.
Tom Devine & Ariel both appeared at the 20th Wigtown Book Festival, 2018, in Scotland's National Book Town. Tom gave two talks on both his latest publication and migration into Scotland, and Ariel delivered a bilingual Gaelic Graffiti Art session & Storytelling session, Adventures with the Gaelic Tree Alphabet for children and young people.
Since moving to Scotland in late 2012, Ariel Killick has worked with and for over 265 schools, communities & festivals, engaging nearly 14,000 children, young people & adults, and delivering over 1,000 workshops, sessions and performances, primary bilingually or in Scots Gaelic, in Storytelling, Circus Skills, Graffiti Art, Street Theatre & Spectacle, Lantern-Making, Sculpture, Rap & more. Through this, Ariel has also created paid employment for over 50 freelance arts workers, and was the leader of an award-winning awareness & advocacy campaign for Irish-speaking Immigrants in Ireland during her time working as an Irish-Gaelic translator and artist in Dublin in the mid 2000's as well.
Ariel has also been a prominent advocate against the deportation of the Australian Dingwall-based Brain family and their child in Gaelic-medium education, as well as the refusal of a visa for a young Nova-Scotian Gaelic teacher to enter Scotland and assist the founding of Bunessan's first Gaelic-medium school unit. Ariel is also the author of a 54 page submission, The Diaspora - One of Scotland's Greatest Natural Resources, published by the Westminster Scottish Affairs Committee during their inquiry into Scotland's demographics and population in late 2016. This advocacy has led to Ariel speaking at several Scottish Independence rallies since mid-2017, including Holyrood, Bannockburn, The Hague, George Square, Glasgow, Dunfermline & the Abbey of Abroath.
The video unfortunately ends somewhat abruptly as Ariel's phone memory ran out after 48 minutes..

Correction: There are actually approximately 59,000 towns and villages in Scotland. The incorrect figure of some 7,100 was referred to in the video while Ariel awaited information from the Gaelic Place Names organisation ainmean-aite.scot
