It took three years to build and cost some 3 billion euros, and marks the latest mega project which President Erdogan hopes will boost economic growth and seal his place in history. He told crowds 'People die, but their work remains immortal'.
The third bridge to span the Bosphorus, it will carry eight lanes of traffic and two railway lines. It aims to alleviate congestion on the other two bridges, and help develop the northe…

Bosphorus Tour in Istanbul / Turkey
One of the worlds most strategic waterways, Bosphorus is the strait between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara; it is an inundated valley that follows an irregular northeast-southwest course 32km (20 miles) long, 730-3300m (800-3600 yards) wide, 30-120m (100-395ft) deep.
Bosphorus comes from a Tracian word of unknown origin, interpreted in Greek as meaning “Ford of the Cow”, from the legend of Io, one of the many lovers of Zeus, who swam across the sea here as a cow chased and continuously disturbed by flies sent by Hera.
Known in Turkish as Bogazici (the Strait), it links the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara and, with theDardanelles (in Canakkale), separates Europe from Asia. It is a former river valley which was drowned by the sea at the end of the Tertiary period. This is a very busy strait with many ships and oil tankers, as well as local fishing and passenger boats.
The current flows north to south; however, a strong subsurface countercurrent with numerous points and coves sets up swirls and eddies that make navigation dangerous to the inexperienced.
There are two suspension toll bridges on this Strait: The first one over the Bosphorus between Beylerbeyi and Ortaköy, opened in 1973, is called as Bogazici Bridge, 1074m (1175yards) long, 6 lanes, 165m (540ft) height of piers. The second one between Anadolu Hisari andRumeli Hisari, opened in 1988, is called as Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, 1090m (1192yd) long, 8 lanes, 65m from the water.
With the shores rising to heights up to 200m (650ft), lined with palaces, ruins, villages, and gardens, this is one of the most beautiful stretches of scenery in Turkey. The best way of seeing the Bosphorus in all its beauty is to take a trip on one of the coastal boats, in this way you can also admire many of the old Ottoman wooden houses (called as Yali in Turkish). You can also stay in some of the best hotels or eat in some of the best restaurants along its shores during your stay in this magnificent city.
Some of the interesting palaces, buildings or neighborhoods on the Bosphorus are: Galata tower, Dolmabahce Palace, Ciragan Palace,Yildiz Palace, Besiktas, Ortaköy, Arnavutköy, Bebek, Rumeli Fortress, Tarabya, Yeniköy, Istinye, Sariyer, Uskudar (Scutari), Kanlica, Beykoz,Anatolian Fortress, Beylerbeyi Palace and Kuleli Military High school.

Why is the Bosphorus important?
The Bosphorus is much more than just a pretty picture or the lifeblood of Istanbul. It’s one of the busiest waterways in the world, connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. With shifting geopolitical dynamics, will it be relevant in the years to come?

Turkey - Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, a new world record for Freyssinet cables
The Yavuz Sultan Selim hybrid cable-stayed suspension bridge located north of Istanbul and designed by engineers Jean-François Klein and Michel Virlogeux has a total length of 2,164 metres and its towers are 322 metres high. The length of its 1,408 metre main span exceeds the world record previously held by the Russky Island Bridge in Vladivostok, Russia, which has a 1,104 metre central span and is also fitted with Freyssinet cables. With its eight motorway lanes (four in each direction) and two railway tracks, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge will facilitate traffic between Europe and Asia.
BOSPHORUS CRUISE ISTANBUL 2019 | ISTANBUL TRAVEL GUIDE
I started the Bosphorus Cruise Istanbul 2019 in Beşiktaş by taking a regular Bosphorus transport ferryboat. We moved from Beşiktaş to Sarıyer along the European Shore of the Bosphorus.
The Bosphorus is called in Turkish Istanbul Boğazı (Throat). It is a busy waterway and this Bosporus strait is connecting the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea. One side is Europe and on the other is Asia. Both shores are lined with beautiful Yalıs. A Yalı is a Bosphorus seafront mansion. I cruised along the European shore of the Bosporus. One of Istanbul's must do's is an Istanbul Bosphorus Trip.
There are many options to do a Istanbul Bosphorus Tour. You can do a private Bosphorus trip, a circle Bosphorus cruise or a full Bosphorus cruise. Another option is called Bosphorus by night tour, cruising and having a magical experience of the city by night.

Istanbul Bosphorus Bridge - 15 Temmuz Şehitler Köprüsü
The Bosphorus Bridge (Turkish: Boğaziçi Köprüsü), known officially as the 15 July Martyrs Bridge (Turkish: 15 Temmuz Şehitler Köprüsü) and unofficially as the First Bridge (Turkish: Birinci Köprü), is one of the three suspension bridges spanning the Bosphorus strait (Turkish: Boğaziçi) in Istanbul, Turkey, thus connecting Europe and Asia (alongside Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge). The bridge extends between Ortaköy (in Europe) and Beylerbeyi (in Asia).
It is a gravity-anchored suspension bridge with steel towers and inclined hangers. The aerodynamic deck hangs on zigzag steel cables. It is 1,560 m (5,118 ft) long with a deck width of 33.40 m (110 ft). The distance between the towers (main span) is 1,074 m (3,524 ft) and the total height of the towers is 165 m (541 ft). The clearance of the bridge from sea level is 64 m (210 ft).
Upon its completion in 1973, the Bosphorus Bridge had the fourth-longest suspension bridge span in the world, and the longest outside the United States (only the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge and Mackinac Bridge had a longer span in 1973). The Bosphorus Bridge remained the longest suspension bridge in Europe until the completion of the Humber Bridge in 1981, and the longest suspension bridge in Asia until the completion of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (Second Bosphorus Bridge) in 1988 (which was surpassed by the Minami Bisan-Seto Bridge in 1989). Currently, the Bosphorus Bridge has the 25th-longest suspension bridge span in the world.
After a group of soldiers took control and partially closed off the bridge during the military coup d'état attempt on 15 July 2016, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım announced on 25 July 2016 the decision of the Cabinet of Turkey that the bridge will be formally renamed as the 15 Temmuz Şehitler Köprüsü (July 15th Martyrs Bridge) in memory of those killed while resisting the attempted coup.

Bridges of Bosphorus (Istanbul) By Night
Both bridges of Bosphorus are spectacular at night...
-----------
Some info about the bridges from Wikipedia:
The Intercontinental Istanbul Eurasia Marathon, organized annually in October, starts from the Anatolian part of Istanbul, crosses the Bosphorus on the bridge and ends in the European part during which the bridge is closed to the vehicular traffic.
Visitors to Istanbul in October can sign up for the 'fun run' at many points round the city and take the opportunity to cross the bridge by foot - many take picnics to enjoy the view.
The bridge was depicted on the reverse of the Turkish 1000 lira banknotes of 1978-1986.[3]
On 15 May 2005 at 7.00 a.m. local time, U.S. tennis star Venus Williams played a show game with Turkish standout İpek Şenoğlu on the bridge, the first tennis match ever to be played on two continents.[4][5] The event was organized as a promotion ahead of the 2005 WTA Istanbul Cup and lasted five minutes.[4] After the exhibition, they both threw a tennis ball into the Bosphorus.[4][5]
On 17 July 2005 at 10.30 a.m. local time, British Formula One driver David Coulthard drove his Red Bull racing car on the bridge first from the European side to the Asian side, and then turning with a spectacular powerslide at the toll plaza back to the European side for show.[6][7] He parked his car in the garden of Dolmabahçe Palace where his ride had started.[6][8] While crossing the bridge with his Formula 1 car, Coulthard was picked up by the automatic surveillance system and charged with a fine of 20 Euros because he passed through the toll booths without payment.[7] His team accepted to pay for him.[7]
--------------
Since April 2007, a fully computerized LED lighting system of changing colours and patterns, developed by Philips, illuminates the bridge at night.
