The Brixham Steam Packet Company, Torbay’s latest attraction.
Opened in July 2017 by Commodore Ron Warwick retired Captain of the famous Cunard Liners Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2, The Brixham Steam Packet Company and Chart Room First Class Coffee Lounge are themed around turn of the century ocean liners with an art deco influence.
The Brixham Steam Packet Company trades is Antique and Reproduction Marine Collectables, you can often see staff refurbishing marine artefacts, customers can ask questions and discuss works in progress and refurbished objects that are currently offered for sale.
The shop specialises in Ocean Liner Memorabilia and has amazing displays including “The Captains Quarters” and “The Bridge”: showing Ships China, Glass and Silverware, Navigation Equipment, Ships Compasses and Telegraphs all offered for sale in such a way that you feel you are aboard a ship.
Bob Higginson owner of The Brixham Steam Packet Company draws on his experiences as a First Class Saloon Steward aboard The QE2, Bob’s passion for Nauticalia is only matched by his business partner Hayley’s passion for baking, Hayley who runs the Chart Room provides the homemade cakes, pastries and scones and specialises in Afternoon, High and Devon Cream Teas all with the First Class Service you would associate with the opulence and splendour of ocean liner travel.
Wall panels surround the interior that give the impression of sides of steam ships with rivets and portholes. This definitely has the wow factor, visitors are welcomed aboard by the owner who gives guided tours explaining about the many items on display.
Ex Naval Officers and Crew are invited to “sign the wall” which makes them feel part of the shop, this creates a very personal touch. Many of the names are of crew who served on ships such as The Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary and Mauritania.
This is a totally unique shop and embraces nostalgia in such a way you feel part of it.
It will not surprise you to learn that visitors and locals are now treating this hidden gem as the latest tourist attraction to hit the lovely fishing port of Brixham in Devon.
Bob says “We have been open less than a year and are immensely proud of the fact we have created such an impact in such a short space of time. Our customers and diners can experience a lovely quiet relaxed atmosphere enjoying the homemade cakes and pastries and browse the many products we trade in and up-cycle”.
The Brixham Steam Packet Company and Chart Room First Class Coffee Lounge operate a strict No Children Policy and Dress Code.

Backpacking from Brixham to Staverton
In January 2019 we decided to redo our first ever backpacking trip by walking from Brixham to Staverton in Devon. We wild camped overnight in Staverton before getting the bus back to Brixham to chill with Meg's family. The sea fishing was at Berry Head and we got a good haul of mackerel for our efforts!
This was part of our training for our walk from Land's End to John O Groats. We're raising money for Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital -
Take a look at the route we took here -

Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling
Real men don't take guff from snotty kids. Neither does Disko Troop, skipper of the We're Here, a fishing schooner out of Gloucester, Massachusetts, when his crew fishes Harvey Cheyne out of the Atlantic. There's no place on the Grand Banks for bystanders, so Harvey is press-ganged into service as a replacement for a man lost overboard and drowned. Harvey is heir to a vast fortune, but his rescuers believe none of what he tells them of his background. Disko won't take the boat to port until it is full of fish, so Harvey must settle in for a season at sea. Hard, dangerous work and performing it alongside a grab-bag of characters in close quarters is a life-changing experience.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
