The Brocken Railway & A Ride Up The Brocken, Wernigerode, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany - November, 2013
The Brocken Railway (Die Brockenbahn) is part of the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways (Harzer Schmalspurbahnen). It runs from the picturesque town of Wernigerode to the top of the Brocken, which is the highest mountain in the Harz Mountains, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in Central Germany. The Brocken was made famous as the setting of Faust by German literature figure Goethe.
This film features footage of the Brocken Railway in Wernigerode, including trains in the Railway Station giving off plenty of steam, as well as the journey up the Brocken. At the top of the Brocken the Steam Engine changes ends, and then the journey going back down again is showed briefly - once the train arrives at Wernigerode. The footage begins at the main Wernigerode Station and ends at Wernigerode Westerntor Station.
The journey up the mountain takes in the aforementioned two stations, as well as Drei Annen Hohne, Awanst, Wormke, Schierke, Goetheweg and Brocken. This footage was taken on a very drizzly day in November 2013, and as such at the top of the Brocken there is no view, however the low cloud makes for some very eerie scenery indeed - it's easy to see where Goethe got his inspiration from.
Wernigerode, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany - November, 2013
Architecture, Steam Trains, a Castle and a Wedding, Wernigerode seemingly has them all, or at least this film suggests that. I visited Wernigerode in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt in November 2013, in order to ride the acclaimed Brockenbahn narrow gauge railway up to the summit of the Brocken mountain - the highest peak in the Harz Mountains. I stayed there for two full days and made this film of the town during my stay.
The film begins on Marktstraße, before moving to the market square and town hall, where a young couple have just got married, ornamental bells ring along one of the towns quaint streets, before I go by the Western Tower or Westerntor towards the Brockenbahn level crossing. Here I wait for a returning steam train pulling coaches back to Wernigerode Bahnhof, the train passes and I walk along the line to Wernigerode Westerntor station, which is quiet as it is out of season. Nearby some relics of a bygone railway age sit and rust.
I walk on to the new pedestrian / cycle bridge over the railway line, which offers views towards the Brocken, Castle and main railway station. Here I film a couple of passing trains, both new and old. I then make my way along Station Road seeing along the way, a couple of the narrow gauge steam locomotives maouvering and one being filled with coal. I then move on to the station itself where I film a couple of departing services.
From here I walk back into the town centre via St. John's Church, and head for the artistically decorated Nicolaiplatz, and the busy shopping street of Breite Straße. From the end of there I take a road train up to Wernigerode Castle, taking time upon arrival to film the castle, the castle terrace, and then the lovely Wintery views over Wernigerode and the surrounding countryside. The film ends with a view from here directly towards the Brocken - the feature which brought me to this part of Germany in the first place.

Wernigerode to Brocken - 2001 - German Narrow Gauge Vol. 1 - FULL VIDEO
PLEASE READ DESCRIPTION:
Let's take ride on the German narrow gauge from Wernigerode to the top of the Brocken on the Harz Ry. and Brocken Ry. in the Harz Mountains of Germany in 2001. On the way we meet other trains at Drei Annen Hohne and Schierke.
The 99 222 that is pulling our train is the last of class still running. Built in 1931, the engine is one of 3 of this class built. The other two were scrapped in the late '40s and early '50s
The train we are riding is pulled by one of the 2-10-2T Class 99 locomotives that are common on narrow gauge lines around Germany. The track gauge on this line is 1000mm or 3ft. 3 3/8inches.
The drivers on these engines are small.. 800 to 1000mm or 31 to 39.3 inches in diameter. They run at a boiler pressure of 14 Bar or about 200 PSI, burning coal. They have a maximum tractive effort of about 23,000 lbs.
Most of this video was shot from the platform of one of the passenger cars, moving from one side to other to get the engine as the train went around the many curves.

By steam to the Brocken!!
The metre-gauge Harzerschmalspurbahn (HSB) is a wonderful system to explore and is rightly famous for its network, steam locos and scenery.
I have been many times since the first visit in 1999 and this is a short record of a day on the Brockenbahn from Wernigerode in summer 2010. Turn the volume up!

Harzbahn train departing Wernigerode for the Brocken
Recorded Friday April 4th 2014 in Wernigerode in the German Harz mountains east of Hanover. While waiting for our own train (our tour group of 34 was with Treyn Holidays of York and we were based at the -- comfortable -- Ramada Hotel in Hahneklee near Goslar)) I filmed the train (apologies for the shaky start of the recording) before ours heading towards the Brocken, a 1.5 hour climb. It was quite dull and a light rain had started to fall -- but we were extremely fortunate that the rain held off and we had good weather for our trip up to the Brocken. The tank engines are magnificent locos and the whole railway is very robustly constructed. These railways might be narrow gauge (metre gauge) but they aren't lightweight in any sense of the word. When our own train arrived we had the last coach (a four-wheeled open balcony type) the very light rain had stopped. Rob.

The Harz Mountains are a mountain range in central Germany. The highest elevation is the mountain Brocken. The only railroad that operates in the entire area is a 1,000 mm narrow gauge steam railroad called Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (Harz Narrow Gauge Railways). Most of their steam locomotives are BR (Baureihe = series) 99 type units with 2-10-2 (or 1E1) wheel arrangement. The railroad runs a relatively large number of scheduled passenger trains. Most popular are the excursion trains to the Brocken on the Brockenbahn (Brocken line). Many such trains to/from the summit of this mountain are featured in this video. Enjoy good old steam operation on narrow gauge in modern 4k quality!

Brocken Train in Gauge 1
The HSB runs a metre gauge steam railway from Wernigerode (Harz Mounatins, Germany) to Brocken, the top of a local mountain. In Wernigerode there is a Miniature Park with some excellent miniature buildings of local landmarks. There is also a Gauge 1 railway replicating part of the Wernigerode to Brocken line. It is a good representation of the real thing. This video is a sample of the action.
