He gazes out over the fields of Bullecourt where in April and May 1917 the
Australian Imperial Force lost 10,000 soldiers, killed or wounded, in their
efforts to break into and hold part of the Hindenburg Line during the World War I.
The War Memorial grounds were scanned with a Focus3D 330, then the point cloud
was meshed in SEQUOIA by Thinkbox.

Bullecourt to Riencourt (2017-04-18)
Footage and description of 13th Battalion AIF moving through German lines during WWI. My great uncle Malcolm Davidson Robertson DCM was captured during this operation, only a few weeks after being awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal for his action at Stormy Trench, during the Battle of Gueudecourt.
Starting at a memorial on the side of Rue de Bullecourt, just up the road from the 'Bullecourt Digger', we proceeded to a small private chapel, on a side road just outside of Riencourt-les-Cagnicourt (seen as Le Brullé on Google Maps), just past a sweeping bend of Rue de Clichy. From there we went to the starting point of the 13th Battalion in the First Battle of Bullecourt.

1st Battle of Bullecourt 11th April 1917 [casualties 3,286]
2nd Battle of Bullecourt 3rd-17 May 1917 [casualties 7,000]
The German Hindenburg Line OG1 - OG2 trenches is built into the hill. The British Tanks Start from here during the 1st Battle of Bullecourt and spread out left and right into the horse shoe shape ridge line defences. To destroy Barbwire and strongpoints. They were to slow and got knocked out early and failed their objectives. Australian Infantry soldiers pushed passed them with no artillery cover and defences still intact. Allied Artillery finally opened up and almost came on top off the Australian Soldiers with friendly fire.
The 2nd Battle of Bullecourt was a lot more organised. Proper Artillery and Machine Gun Barrage support. CENTRAL ROAD [dark green track] was the key and was used again during the attack. They broke into the Hindenburg Line and held some of the OG1 - OG2 Trenches for 2 weeks. But with constant German re-inforcements flanking both sides and unable to resupply ones own ammunition. Its only a matter of time until your forced to retire.

Like a horse shoe we are encircled and flanked both side by German Trench Line Defences. Landscape slopes, rises and sinks into hidden areas left of Riencourt. SIX CROSS ROADS Intersection or OSTRICH Avenue. This could be how they connected and broke into the Hindenburg Line.
Just to the right of Reincourt Village is called EMU VALLEY. This Area is totally exposed to the flanking German Machine village of Queant.

Anzac Day service in Bullecourt, France
Anzac Day service commemorating the centenary of the battles of Bullecourt. On Anzac Day, we remember not only the original Anzacs who died on 25 April 1915, but every one of our service men and women who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. ANZAC Day is a time to reflect on the contribution made by all of our past and present service men and women who have displayed great courage, discipline and self-sacrifice in choosing a life of service to their country. The Anzac spirit lives in the heart and minds of all Australians as we acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who contributed so much in shaping the identity of this proud nation. Approximately 2350 ADF members are currently deployed on operation, continuing the Anzac spirit whilst serving Australia’s national interests at home and in many countries around the world.

Reportage sur l'Anzac-Day. Montage Yannick Alram Photography.
