Storm Damage at The Bulman Bar Kinsale Feb 5th 2014
HURRICANE winds, mountainous waves and very heavy rain battered the coast of County Cork and brought flood devastation to several towns, villages and rural roads on Tuesday night.
From around 8pm on Tuesday, a combination of gale force south easterly winds and torrential downpours and full tide being around one metre higher than usual resulted in the breaching of several sea defences and rivers bursting their banks.
At Summercove, Kinsale, part of the pier, sea wall and a section of road outside The Bulman bar collapsed leaving a huge hole and a pumping station was badly damaged. ‘It was a bit chaotic but our flood defences worked’, said Bulman proprietor Pearse O’Sullivan. Cllr Noel Harrington and others secured boats which broke free near the Harbour Bar, Scilly.
Water came as far at the front door of Acton’s Hotel off Pier Road and there was flooding at World’s End and the car park and the Wharf Tavern at the Trident Hotel but it was business as usual on Wednesday, said manager Hal McElroy with lunches served upstairs.
While there is no doubt the new main drainage scheme prevented devastation in the heritage town, minor flooding was reported along Long Quay, Emmet Place and Short Quay.
There was major damage in the normally tranquil Roberts Cove in Tracton where a 50 feet section of road was destroyed directly behind the beach and debris thrown 100 metres up Minane Bridge road and recycling bins ended up in field. There was also damage to the road on the bridge.

RTEYnews Kinsale: The Bulman, Summer Cove, Road Destroyed
This is a road that I frequently pass as it's both where I grew up and still pass weekly on my way to my home in Summer Cove. For years as a kid myself and my friends all used to hang about there and play with the waves when it was stormy but never in my life did I think I'd see the day when the road gets eaten up by the ferocious sea.The power of that sea was power I've never seen before down there. There's also a house that sits right on the wall and has had the windows blown in and a lot of damage has been done.
