One of the most famous views of Shanghai is found at the Bund (Wai Tan), a waterfront area along the western bank of the Huangpu River.
Initially, the Bund was a British settlement. Found on the Bund are many historical buildings which at a time housed many banks and trading houses of international countries including the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and Italy.
The Bund is very popular with tourists who come here to walk along the riverfront that faces the many modern skyscrapers across the river in Lujiazui in the Pudong District.
Dominating the skyline are the Shanghai Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center, Jin Mao Tower, and Oriental Pearl Tower.

The Bund or Waitan is a waterfront area in central Shanghai. The area centers on a section of Zhongshan Road within the former Shanghai International Settlement, which runs along the western bank of the Huangpu River in the eastern part of Huangpu District. The area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong District. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. It is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Shanghai. Why is the Bund so famous?
Coming to Shanghai and missing the Bund is like visiting Beijing and bypassing the Forbidden City or the Great Wall. The Bund is the iconic landmark of Shanghai and the area around the Bund is the tourist center of Shanghai and is the city’s most famous mile.
What impress travelers most should be the 52 buildings with various international architectural styles which makes the Bund “An Exhibition of International Buildings”. There is no doubt that the Bund is the fusion of Western and Chinese Culture, an epitome of Shanghai’s history, and a great place to explore Shanghai’s today and see the future of Shanghai.
The word bund means an embankment or an embanked quay. The word comes from the Persian word band, through Hindustani, meaning an embankment, levee or dam.
There are numerous sites in India, China, and Japan that are called bunds (e.g., the Yokohama Bund). However, The Bund, without qualification to location, usually refers to this stretch of embanked riverfront in Shanghai.
The Chinese name for the Bund is unrelated in meaning: it means literally the outer bank, referring to the Huangpu River, because this part of the riverfront was located farther downstream than the inner bank area adjacent to the old walled city of Shanghai.
History of Shanghai Bund
The name “Bund” in Anglo-Indian term means “the embankment of a muddy waterfront”. To know Shanghai, you must come to Shanghai Bund. Before the 1840s, Shanghai was a small seaside town and the Bund was once a muddy towpath for boats along Huangpu River. After First Opium War in 1842, Shanghai began to be an open port and later the Bund was the first settlement of Great Britain. Many foreign powers entered Shanghai and erected their distinct Western-style banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, etc. In the later of 19th Century and 20th Century, Shanghai grew into Asia’s leading city, a cosmopolitan and thriving commercial and financial center. Known as “Oriental Wall Street”, the Bund was a historical miniature of colonial-era Shanghai.
Recommended Visiting Route
Travelers could visit the Bund either from north to south or from south to north. It is recommended to walk along the Bund which takes 1-2 hours.
At the northern end of the Bund, on the north bank of Suzhou Creek, rises the brick pile of Broadway Mansions, Russian Consulates, Astor House Hotel. Head south over Waibaidu Bridge and turn west to walk along Suzhou Creek until you reach the area known as the Back Bund. You won’t miss the Union Church which dates to 1885. Behind the church, you can catch a glimpse of the Former British Consulate and gardens, the first foreign building to go up in Shanghai. Follow to a row of beautiful old buildings, beginning with the Gothamesque China Baptist Publication Building. Turn left on Beijing East Road and head back towards to the Bund waterfront. Then, head down Zhongshan East Road to see Jardine Matheson, Bank of China, and Peace Hotel. Reach Promenade to catch good view of the Pudong skyline. Continue to head down to see North China Daily News, Customs House, Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, Shanghai Club, etc. Just across the street is the 49 meter tall Meteorogical Signal Tower, originally built in 1908 opposite the French Consulate. Later, you’ll reach Yan’an Road which marks the end of the walk.
Day Views
Exploring the Bund in the daytime is quite different from that in the evening. From very early in the morning, before tourists gather here, local Shanghai people come to the riverbank to enjoy walking, jogging, doing exercises and flying kites.

外滩是上海租界区也是整个上海近代城市开发的起点。在1843年以前，这里还是黄浦江边的一片泥滩“黄浦滩”。黄浦滩位于县城附近及以北的一段称为“外滩”，以南（习惯以陆家浜为界）则为“里滩”。1844年起外黄浦滩北段一带被划为英国租界，英国人使用这块地区作为码头，不久这里开设了最早的一批洋行，其中最有实力的是英资公司怡和洋行（Jardine Matheson & Co.，外滩27号）、宝顺洋行（Dent & Co.，外滩14号）、老沙逊洋行（David Sasson and Sons Company，外滩24号），以及美资的旗昌洋行（Russell & Co.，外滩9号）。1848年在这里铺筑了马路和加固了江岸。而这条马路的名称是“Bund”，来源于印地语，在英语里是“堤岸”、“有堤岸的港埠”的意思，此名称至今仍是外滩在多数语言中的称呼。外黄浦滩的南段则划入法租界建造“法兰西外滩”码头区。1865年，外滩装上了煤气路灯并在后来的1882年更新为了弧光灯。1883年，上海第一条电话线路从外滩正丰街（今广东路）铺设至十六铺。
至1846年上海辟为商埠以后，许多外国的银行、商行、总会、报社开始在此云集。一幢幢商业大楼拔地而起。外滩成为西方列强在上海的政治、金融、商务和文化中心。当年各国的领事馆，如英国领事馆、法国领事馆、俄国领事馆等，都大多集中与此。
外滩也是国际金融资本在中国的大本营。1864年，外滩共集中有洋行61家，这个数字在11年后迅速增加至了157家。1897年，第一家华资银行——中国通商银行在外滩开业。在这之后，中方以及西方的资本都开始集中在外滩，外滩成为了中国的金融以及贸易中心。1928年，中央银行总行，中国、交通银行总管理处悉数迁来外滩。1935年，外滩吸收了全国银行实收资本的50.72％，全国库存现金的61％，全国存款的77.84％和放款的77.64％，毋庸置疑的成为了全国乃至远东的金融中心。
现在的上海和平饭店，原是美国犹太人沙逊的沙逊大厦。当时的国民政府为了显示自己的经济实力，决定在沙逊大厦旁，建造一幢远东最高的34层的银行大厦。1934年正当施工时，沙逊却无理干涉，说“在英租界造房子，高度不得超过我的金字塔塔顶”。由于当时的环境因素，这桩官司一直打到伦敦，结果判决中国银行只能造17层，比相邻的沙逊大厦金字塔顶低30公分，而且工程也由外商设计、承包。
1924年，上海公共租界和法租界当局为纪念第一次世界大战中死难的上海侨民而兴建的欧战纪念碑。纪念碑位于上海公共租界和法租界交界的爱多亚路黄浦滩边（即今延安东路外滩）。也是上海外滩的标志性建筑物。因其规模宏大，也被称为“上海第一碑”。1941年，日军进驻租界，纪念碑遂遭破坏。
1868年今天的黄浦公园建立（当时叫外滩公园），这是上海最老的一个公园，到1928年7月1日外滩公园才正式对中国人开放。19世纪末开始，上海外滩渐渐成为租界区管理机构、银行、旅馆等建造它们的体面建筑的地区。逐渐地租界初期在这里建立的比较矮小的建筑被拆毁，新的豪华大厦起立。到1930年代今天上海外滩的天幕基本上成形，并持续繁荣至1940年代。
1943年8月，外滩随交还上海公共租界于汪精卫政权，外滩也随著上海结束了长达百年的租界时期。
1950年代起，即国共内战后，中华人民共和国成立，上海外滩大多数建筑都被国家或城市政府机构使用，如汇丰银行大楼在1949年以后曾经是上海市人民政府所在地。各国银行逐步撤出中国，酒店及娱乐会所纷纷关闭改做其他用途，原有的租界时期风格的门牌或路牌大多被撤换，外滩沿岸的外国伟人雕像也被撤走。除此之外，到1980年代为止上海外滩的外貌基本没有多少变化。
80年代末开始在上海建立了许多新的摩天大楼，有些大楼直接建造在旧建筑物的后面（比如外滩中心），与这些新建筑相比外滩的老建筑显得非常矮小，这深深地改变了外滩的相貌。过去直接在外滩江畔的码头全部被搬迁，江畔的防汛墙也获得了修复和加固。此外在建造延安东路高架公路进入中山东一路的接口处时将外滩天文台整个地向南移动了约50米。在外滩的最北段苏州河注入黄浦江处还建造了一个人民英雄纪念塔。
1994年，市政府成立上海市外滩房屋置换有限公司，将外滩的各栋建筑置换经营，以重振外滩金融街的名号。自1995年7月，中国光大银行进驻外滩29号开了先河后，原先使用外滩各建筑的政府机关便开始陆陆续续经过置换经营退出了。
1995年9月30日，由上海市档案馆与黄浦区人民政府联合筹建的外滩历史纪念馆正式开馆。纪念馆以大量的历史照片为主，辅以具有代表性的档案文献、实物，展示了上海开埠150年来外滩的变化历史。在纪念馆里可以从外滩的发展轨迹研究上海的发展历史。
从2008年起，上海外滩开起一系列针对交通流量而改造的工程。该系列工程首先拆除了原外滩南段与延安高架路的高架弯道，消除了延安高架直接与中山东路合流的交流道。并从在同年的3月1日起，对外滩北段外白渡桥与外滩恢复至上世纪原貌的工程。以上工程于2009年初完工。下一阶段改造工程重点在于对外滩原8车道，缩为4车道，增加外滩的公共步行道路与绿地空间，且将外滩水平面降至上世纪外滩原有的略高于路面的高度。兴建从吴淞路至中山南二路的外滩隧道，将通过外滩的快速车流地下化，延安东路以北双层双向为6车道，其以南为单层双向4车道。以上工程施工期间对外滩进行封闭性施工，外滩于2010年3月28日起施工完毕并恢复对外开放。
近年内关于上海外滩建筑群申请世界文化遗产的建议引起了一些讨论。多数人欣赏和赞叹上海外滩建筑群的古典美丽景观，但也有观点认为外滩建筑群应被视为中国近代耻辱史的象征。
2012年和2013年的12月31日晚邻近凌晨在外滩上演了外滩4D灯光秀。该灯光秀采用巴库灯向外滩的汇丰银行大楼与江海关大楼这两栋建筑投影，在跨年时间举行，已经成为了上海的跨年标志性活动。2014年年末的外滩跨年灯光秀改在紧靠外滩的外滩源举行，后因不明原因发生了踩踏事件，造成至少36人死亡。

The area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers of Lujiazui in the Pudong District. The Bund usually refers to the buildings and wharves on this section of the road, as well as some adjacent areas. From the 1860s to the 1930s, it was the rich and powerful centre of the foreign establishment in Shanghai, operating as a legally protected treaty port.
The Shanghai Bund has dozens of historical buildings, lining the Huangpu River, that once housed numerous banks and trading houses from the United Kingdom, France, the United States, Italy, Russia, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, and Belgium, as well as the consulates of Russia and Britain, a newspaper, the Shanghai Club and the Masonic Club. The Bund lies north of the old, walled city of Shanghai. It was initially a British settlement; later the British and American settlements were combined in the International Settlement. Magnificent commercial buildings in the Beaux Arts style sprang up in the years around the turn of the 20th century as the Bund developed into a major financial centre of east Asia. Directly to the south, and just northeast of the old walled city, the former French Bund (the quai de France, part of the Shanghai French Concession) was of comparable size to the Bund but functioned more as a working harbourside.
By the 1940s, the Bund housed the headquarters of many, if not most, of the major financial institutions operating in China, including the big four national banks in the Republic of China era. However, with the Communist victory in the Chinese civil war, many of the financial institutions were moved out gradually in the 1950s, and the hotels and clubs closed or converted to other uses. The statues of colonial figures and foreign worthies which had dotted the riverside were also removed.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, with the thawing of economic policy in the People's Republic of China, buildings on the Bund were gradually returned to their former uses. Government institutions were moved out in favour of financial institutions, while hotels resumed trading as such. Also during this period, a series of floods caused by typhoons motivated the municipal government to construct a tall levee along the riverfront, with the result that the embankment now stands some 10 metres higher than street level. In the 1990s, Zhongshan Road (named after Sun Yat-sen), the road on which the Bund is centred, was widened to ten lanes. As a result, most of the parkland which had existed along the road disappeared. Also in this period, the ferry wharves connecting the Bund and Pudong, which had served the area's original purpose, were removed. A number of pleasure cruises still operate from some nearby wharves.
In the 1990s, the Shanghai government attempted to promote an extended concept of the Bund to boost tourism, and land value in nearby areas, as well as to reconcile the promotion of colonial relics with the Socialist ideology. In its expanded form, the term Bund (as New Bund or Northern Bund) was used to refer to areas south of the Yan'an Road, and a stretch of riverfront north of the Suzhou River (Zhabei). Such use of the term, however, remains rare outside of tourism literature.

Shanghai China - The Bund District
The Bund (Waitan) is the colonial-era district of Shanghai China that is home to a wonderful collection of old European style buildings. Located on the east side of the Huangpu River, a picturesque pedestrian promenade runs along the waterfront attracting thousand of Shanghai residents and visitors from China and abroad.
Across the river from the Bund, one can see Shanghai's ultramodern financial district with its modern hotels and massive towers. Visitors can enjoy a sightseeing cruise down the river or simply enjoy watching the marine traffic.
The Bund is one of the top 10 tourist attractions in Shanghai, China's largest city.

It is a romantic night, the wet floor just reflected the splendid light during the night, unfortunately, the Garden bridge is receiving renovation so the view is not perfect, hope you enjoy it.
Shanghai is in far east Asia, most of the buildings at the Bund was built by former British and French settlers, it is European style, but you can still observe some of the Chinese elements in those buildings, very interesting, worth wasting time to explore.
