England: Tales of Canterbury, Becket and Chaucer.
The Cathedral City of Canterbury is the backdrop for the conflict between King Henry ll and Archbishop Thomas Becket. Becket's murder in the 12th century sparked pilgrimages to his shrine in Canterbury from all over Europe, but getting there wasn't easy. Life in the 14th century was dangerous and a thriving travel business developed offering safe pilgrimage tours. Pilgrims, such as Chaucer's colourful characters travelled in large numbers and would have passed over the oldest river crossing in England, where the strategic placement of a ducking stool kept traders honest and flushed out witches. Visit Canterbury Cathedral and The Canterbury Tales
Canterbury (Listeni/ˈkæntərˌbɜri/ or /ˈkæntərˌbɛri/)[1] is a historic English cathedral city, which lies at the heart of the City of Canterbury, a district of Kent in South East England. It lies on the River Stour.
Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England and forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury.
Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt 1070-77. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the twelfth century, and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174 , with significant eastward extensions to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. The Norman nave and transepts survived until the late fourteenth century, when they were demolished to make way for the present structures.
The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century. The tales (mostly written in verse although some are in prose) are presented as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together on a journey from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. The prize for this contest is a free meal at the Tabard Inn at Southwark on their return.
After a long list of works written earlier in his career, including Troilus and Criseyde, House of Fame, and Parliament of Fowls, the Canterbury Tales was Chaucer's magnum opus. He uses the tales and the descriptions of its characters to paint an ironic and critical portrait of English society at the time, and particularly of the Church. Structurally, the collection resembles The Decameron, which Chaucer may have read during his first diplomatic mission to Italy in 1372.
The Mayflower was the ship that in 1620 transported 102 English Pilgrims, including a core group of Separatists, to New England. Their story is one of travail and survival in a harsh New World environment.
Robert Cushman (1578 -- 1625) Robert Cutchman or Cushman was baptized at Rolvenden, County Kent, England, February 9, 1577/8. He served as the Chief Agent for the Separatist Leiden contingent and that of Plymouth Colony from 1617 to his death in the spring of 1625.[1]

The England Tapes #2: The Canterbury Tales (1985)
We didn't have a Chaucer as a travel guide, didn't even read the Canterbury Tales before, but a nice woman told us a lot about this beautiful old city and its outstanding cathedral, a magnificent masterpiece of Gothic architecture, so that we were happy when the guided sight-seeing tour was over and we could have a look on the hot spots of this beautiful place on our own.
The Canterbury Tales || England 2017
A short video I made in England about the first few lines of The Canterbury Tales.
**********************************
During my recent trip to England, I set myself the goal of completing a few little projects. One of these was taking pictures representing each of the first 18 lines of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales (which I had memorized in college). It took the whole trip, and some of these may be a bit of a stretch, but I did it! Forgive my pronunciation if it's a bit off - British Lit class was quite a few years ago! :)

Canterbury Tales, Canterbury, Kent
The Canterbury Tales has been a major tourist attraction in Canterbury in Kent since the mid 1980's when it was constructed within the shell of St Margaret's Church. At this time the opportunity was taken to remove the floor and conduct an archaeological dig. Fortunately this has enabled us to know exactly what the history of the land was and what has been constructed on it. The remains of a Roman bath house were found on top of which were constructed the earliest stages of the church. It is believed there was a Saxon church on the site although evidence has not been found. It is certainly early Norman with the first recorded reference being in 1153. It was rebuilt and enlarged around this time and altered again in the 14th Century. It remained pretty much as is until 1770 when the road was widened and the east end truncated to allow this. In 1850 it was restored and the east end rebuilt into the short apse we see today. Other than damage to the tower it was largely unaffected by the severe bombing that Canterbury suffered during the Second World War. In 1958 it was opened as a church and institute for the deaf and closed in 1983. Interestingly it is still owned by the Diocese of Canterbury and behind all the fabric of the Canterbury Tales exhibits it remains a church.
There are reports of paranormal activity within the venue but Ghost Connections were not privy to them prior to investigating.
The Canterbury Ghost Tour provides a tale or two associated with the church and its crypt and in 2008 two evenings of Electronic Voice Phenomena experiments were conducted. There have been no other known investigations like ours on the site that we are aware of.

A portly Miller, barely able to sit on his horse, rambles on about the flighty wife of a crotchety old carpenter and the scholar she takes as her lover. This might sound like a bawdy joke, but it’s part of one of the most esteemed works of English literature ever created: The Canterbury Tales. Iseult Gillespie shares everything you need to know to read Geoffrey Chaucer’s classic collection.

Places to see in ( Canterbury - UK )
Canterbury, a cathedral city in southeast England, was a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Ancient walls, originally built by the Romans, encircle its medieval centre with cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. Canterbury Cathedral, founded 597 A.D., is the headquarters of the Church of England and Anglican Communion, incorporating Gothic and Romanesque elements in its stone carvings and stained-glass windows.
Canterbury is a historic English cathedral city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which lies at the heart of the City of Canterbury, a local government district of Kent, England. Canterbury lies on the River Stour.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the primate of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion owing to the importance of St Augustine, who served as the apostle to the pagan Kingdom of Kent around the turn of the 7th century. The city's cathedral became a major focus of pilgrimage following the 1170 martyrdom of Thomas Becket, although it had already been a well-trodden pilgrim destination since the murder of St Alphege by the men of King Canute in 1012. A journey of pilgrims to Becket's shrine served as the frame for Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th century classic The Canterbury Tales.
Canterbury is a popular tourist destination: consistently one of the most-visited cities in the United Kingdom, the city's economy is heavily reliant upon tourism. The city has been occupied since Paleolithic times and served as the capital of the Celtic Cantiaci and Jute Kingdom of Kent. Many historical structures fill the area, including a city wall founded in Roman times and rebuilt in the 14th century, the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and a Norman castle, and the oldest extant school in the world, the King's School. Modern additions include the Marlowe Theatre and the St Lawrence Ground, home of the Kent County Cricket Club. There is also a substantial student population, brought about by the presence of the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, the University for the Creative Arts, and the Girne American University Canterbury campus. Canterbury remains, however, a small city in terms of geographical size and population, when compared with other British cities.

England - Canterbury
The city of Canterbury, or as the Romans called it -- Durovernum Cantiacorum, lies in Kent in the southeast region of England. Pope Gregory the Great sent Augustine to the area in 597 A.D. to convert the heathen English, and after asking permission of King Athelbert of Kent, Augustine built his priory on the present cathedral grounds. Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered in the building in 1170. The cathedral has grown massive over the years and is now the oldest church in England that's still in use. The city is charming, with great shopping and tremendous history and heritage, and it's a lot more fun than it was when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales in 1387.
