Torpoint is a civil parish and town on the Rame Peninsula in southeast Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. It is situated opposite the city of Plymouth across the Hamoaze which is the tidal estuary of the River Tamar.
Torpoint is linked to Plymouth (and Devonport) by the Torpoint Ferry. The three vessels that operate the service are chain ferries – that is, they are propelled across the river by pulling themselves on fixed chains which lie across the bed of the river. The journey takes about seven minutes.
It is said that Torpoint's name is derived from Tar Point, a name given because of the initial industry on the west bank of the Hamoaze. However this is actually a nickname given by workers, Torpoint meaning rocky headland. Torpoint is an eighteenth-century planned town. The grid-based design for the town was commissioned by Reginald Pole Carew in the Parish of Antony in 1774. His family continue to have a strong influence in the area, having become the Carew Poles in the twentieth century, and still reside at their family seat, Antony House.
In 1796 Torpoint was the setting for a shooting battle between the crew of a government vessel, the Viper, and a large party of armed liquor smugglers, in which one person was killed and five people seriously wounded. Torpoint has a Non-League football club Torpoint Athletic F.C. who play at The Mill.

Torpoint Carnival 1994
Found this oldish video of Torpoint carnival... I'm guessing its 1994 but feel free to correct me!
Starts off on the Racquets float and then shows more of the fun from towards the end.
Why on Earth aren't the carnivals this fun anymore... more than 2 floats would be nice!
Feel free to tag anyone or share with anyone you recognise!
A Crossing On The Chain Ferrys Of Torpoint
Went out today to shoot some casual everyday photos. Which on my way home included a trip across on the Torpoint Ferry. Which even being Plymouth born & bred I haven't done for decades lol
The Torpoint ferrys were established in the late 1700's (1791) as a service across the river Tamar between the Torpoint side in Cornwall & the Devonport side in Plymouth. They officially cam into service in 1832.
Propelled by pulling on the thick, heavy chains across the river that sink back down into the river after the ferries pass over them. Each one able to take over 70 cars with an average crossing time taking no more than 10mins

This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process.
The rather haphazard journey from Land's End to John O'Groats creates a series of moving picture postcards. Look out for shots containing the component colours - red and blue-green - such as when a little girl in a red coat and hat walks among peacocks in the grounds of a castle, and three girls with red curly hair pose by the sea at Torquay.
The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time. A long-distance journey by car was a relatively new concept, with none of the amenities en route now taken for granted. The visit to a petrol station shows smoking on the forecourt: no health and safety issues back then! The travelogue ends with a series of recognisable London landmarks. Much remains the same - one major exception being the volume of traffic on the roads. (Jan Faull)
