PART 2: ???????? The World Class Ruta del Cares Gorge. Tour around Northern Spain..
A hike through the Ruta del Cares Gorge. We combine our hike with an off road 4x4 nature tour to create a spectaular circular day trip. Part 3 with the 4x4 tour is coming soon.
The hike is about 8 miles and apart from the first section is flat so easy going, there are many vertical drops of many hundreds of feet so you need to stay away from the edge, the path is a least 8ft wide all the way so no need to be worried.
If you want to walk the gorge just one way then combining it with a tour is an excellent and cost effective way to do this, at €30 each (2019) it was cheaper than a taxi
Is it impossible to get lot on the route but you can find the route as I recorded it here:

Amazing Cares Gorge Walk – Spain's Best One-Day Hike
Best one-day hike in Spain, probably even Europe? The Cares Gorge Walk (Ruta del Cares) in Asturias, in northern Spain, has to be a contender!
Join me on a stunning 25-kilometres hike along an amazingly engineered path in the dramatic northern part of the Parque Nacional de Picos de Europa. There are Indiana-Jones-style paths cut into the rock, plus tunnels, bridges and dizzying viewpoints. I've never been on a hike like it in Europe and it's guaranteed to be the highlight of your trip.
ALL THE DETAILS
The walk is from the trailhead at Poncebos (6km from the town of Arenas de Cabrales – there's a bus up to the start of the walk in summer). It takes about 3 hours to reach the small village of Caín – loads of cafes and restaurants here – and then you turn around and do it all again!
You need to be fit - it's a 25-km hike after all - but the going is flat and fairly easy. People do it in trainers, but hiking shoes or boots are best.
STAY - at the fabulous Hotel Torrecerredo in Arenas de Cabrales, which has brilliant food and tons of hiking advice and help -

TRAVEL ASTURIAS | Natural Paradise of Spain | Paraiso Natural. Rio Dobra. Viajar Asturias.
In this episode we travel from Galicia along the coast to the province of Asturias, in Spain. We visit chapels and swim in rivers and visit the farm that we lived on for a few years before having kids. Asturias is known for its insanely magical natural beauty. It has the high peaks of the Picos de Europa and it’s stunning, craggy coastline with it’s bright blue water. We fell in love with this region years ago when we volunteered here.
In the countryside of Asturias, the majority of people still live according to their ancient traditions. Many of them are shepherds and it's very common for many families to have their own cheese cave in the mountains to age their alpine cheeses. Also, the majority of people still forage for their sustenance, finding chestnuts, wild mushrooms, hazelnuts, apples to press for Sidra, walnuts, and cherries, which all grow wild in the forests.
It is a very unknown region, most often only visited by other Spaniards. It is a place to be completely surrounded by natural beauty and to find beautiful, quiet countryside villages in the mountains or on the coast.
Please let us know if you have visited this area before or if you plan to go soon!

EPIC CARES GORGE HIKE- Picos De Europa Mountains in North Spain. JULZ AND JASON Vlog Episode 4.
Is this possibly the most enjoyable one day hike in Spain?
What do these amazing mountain ranges have to offer? Hiking, scenery, beautiful villages and hungry mountain goats.
The CARES GORGE: Poncebos to Cain in the Picos de Europa
The Cares route (also known as the 'Divine Gorge') covers over 12 km. between Caín (province of León) and Poncebos, in Asturias. Depending on your speed, it takes around 3.5 hours to walk.
The Cares Gorge (Garganta del Cares) is a mile deep in some places and weaves its way through the limestone mountains of the Picos de Europa. Carved out by the Cares River, the gorge divides the central and western massifs of the mountain range.

The Cares' River Route - Ruta del Cares - HISTORY - HISTORIA
HOMAGE TO THE WORKERS that worked in the Water Channel and the Cares' River Route that it is one of the more beautiful and comfortable roads in Mountains of Picos de Europa .
Layout in a startling narrow pass that conforms the spectacular DIVINE GORGE OF THE CARES' RIVER . Among Cain (León) and Puente Poncebos(Asturias).
WATER CHANNEL
From 1915 at 1921 the Society Electra of Viesgo carried out the reception works and conduction of the waters of the Cares' river, from Cain's village (León), until the hydroelectric station of Puente Poncebos, in Asturias. The difficulty of the land and the technical problems, modified the initial idea of a tunnel between Cain's prey and the camera of load of Camarmeña, for 11 Kms (SEVEN MILES) of channel. The result is today's channel that with a difference of one for thousand so soon appears in the surface as it goes into in one of the 71 tunnels drilled by hand. More than 500 workers worked in the Channel. Of the hardness of the same one are testimony of 11 lives that got lost in different accidents.
THE CURRENT PATH OF THE CARES' RIVER
To eliminate the difficulties of maintenance of the channel on the old path, they undertook the works of the current path, that were prolonged from September of 1945 until June of 1950. For this, were carried out diverse works, as the chopping of the rock, for loads of dynamite that opened the path, to lift walls with stone, to build the path and to level. To install rudimentary manual cable cars to cross people and it loads from a side to another of the river, or to cut wood to build the bridges on abysses until of 196 feet high.. THE WORKERS HAD TO WORK TIED WITH THICK STRINGS.
Two workers died in this work, carried out by 45 workers, almost all of Cain, Valdeón and Cabrales that taking a risk their life built the most beautiful and comfortable mountain route in Picos de Europa National Park

PART 3: The perfect compliment to the Cares Gorge Hike
The Cares Gorge is not a circular route, buses are very limited and take several hours, taxis are very expensive. Our campsite recommended taking an off road 4x4 tour back through the mountains. We paid the full price for the tour so we can be genuine when we say its a great experience. Our guide Fernando was very knowledgeable and passionate about nature and answered all the questions we had.
We paid a little extra to get picked up from our campsite near Las Arenas (Camping Naranjo de Bulnes) at 9am . Fernando drove us to Poncebos, the start of the Cares Gorge Walk - (20 mins drive) and we walked through the amazing gorge for 3 hours. At the end of the gorge (Cain) there are several restaurants where we ate and did a short walk before being picked up at 3:30pm. The tour lasted 4 hours and finishes at Poncebos. The cost was €30pp, and €5pp for the pickup from the campsite. We had heard the taxis can be in excess of €100 to drive back along the roads. This was the price July 2019 and is obviously subject to change.
