Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon first arrived in the Tampa Bay area in 1513, but the Spaniards focused their attention on settling eastern Florida and left the western areas alone. In 1824, only two months after the arrival of the first American settler, four companies of the U.S. Army established Fort Brooke to protect the strategic harbor at Tampa Bay.
Development of the Tampa Bay region began after the territory became part of the United States in 1845. In spite of the blockade and Federal occupation during the Civil War, the area grew steadily. Henry B. Plant's 1884 railroad extension to the Hillsborough River provided access to new areas, and he built lavish hotels along his rail line to attract visitors.
Tampa FL owes its commercial success to Tampa Bay and the Hillsborough River. When phosphates were discovered nearby in the late 1880s, the resulting mining and shipping industries prompted a boom of growth and wealth that lasted through the 1890s. The Tampa FL port is now the seventh largest in the nation; today phosphate shipping is supplemented by trade in shrimp. A pleasure cruise line operates as well.
In 1886 Vicente Martinez Ybor established a cigar factory in Tampa FL. From the steps of Ybor's factory, Jose Marti, sometimes called the George Washington of Cuba, exhorted the cigar workers to take up arms against Spain in the late 1800's. Hispanic culture enlivens Ybor City, which covers about 2 square miles between Nebraska Avenue, 22nd Street, Columbus Drive and East Broadway.
The military has also had an ongoing role in the Tampa FL development. Tampa FL was the primary outfitting and embarkation port for U.S. troops bound for Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Today the U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command are headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa FL.
The main Tampa FL downtown business district has grown phenomenally since the 1960s. Major banks and an increasing number of other corporations occupy large glass, steel and concrete buildings that tower high above the bay. The Tampa Convention Center, overlooking the Hillsborough River, offers meeting facilities and features access to the Riverwalk.
Thus Tampa FL has evolved into a multi-cultural, diverse business center with sustainable communities for its citizens. People of all ages arrive here to escape the worries and winters of wherever they came from, and an increasing number of them stay.
In 2003, the City of Tampa's Public Art Program commissioned artist Lynn Ash to create a large painting that would weave together many of the notable aspects of Tampa Florida's unique character and identity. Over the course of three years, the artist researched, met with community leaders, and looked at hundreds of photographs. The end result is a collage of nearly 200 vignettes, portraits, and images that all speak to some aspect of Tampa Florida, both past and present. The border that wraps the Story of Tampa Florida is comprised of over 50 individual smaller paintings within the painting, each somehow specific to Tampa Florida: devil crabs, citrus, cuban bread, manatees, and bananas, are just a few. Within the body of the painting the viewer will find portraits of recent and past Mayors, civic leaders, celebrities and national heroes. They will also find well-recognized landmarks, a few more obscure ones, and several memorable events. While no single artwork, novel or film could possibly present a complete story, the Story of Tampa Florida is a visual celebration of Tampa Florida, the city and its people. 7 Horrifying Cases of Collapsed Bridges
Here we take a look at horrifying cases of collapsed bridges. These terrible incidents of bridges falling down into a river changed history.

Voiceover by Rodney Tompkins:
7: Yangmingtan Bridge
The 15.4 km-long Yangmingtan Bridge is located in the city of Harbin, Heilongjiang province, China. It is the country’s longest bridge on the northern side of the Yangtze River. Construction on the bridge began in 2009, and it was completed in only 18 months. As Harbin’s first suspension bridge its total building cost was estimated at around 300 million dollars. Even within the context of China’s fast growing infrastructure, the project was finished so quickly that it received praises from the state media
6: The Seongsu Bridge
Construction on this bridge, which stretched over Seoul’s Han River, in South Korea, was completed in 1979. It measures 1160 meters. On the 21st of October, 1994, the bridge collapsed because of a suspension structure failure. One of the concrete slabs fell as its support steel trusses had not been welded properly. 32 lives were lost in the accident. 17 people were injured. Because of its overall weak structure, the Seongsu Bridge had to be rebuilt
5: The Sunshine Skyway Bridge
Although it has been rebuilt the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge, spanning Florida’s Tampa Bay, was first opened to traffic in 1954, on the 6th of September. On the 9th of May 1980, at approximately 7:33 am, the MV Summit Venture freighter collided with one of the bridge’s support columns. The incident took place during a massive thunderstorm and caused more than 1200 feet of the bridge to plummet into the Tampa Bay. A Greyhound bus, six cars and a truck fell into the water from a height of 150 feet.
4: The Silver Bridge
The Silver Bridge was built in 1928 and its name was due to the color of its aluminum paint coating. It was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge that stretched over the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant, North Virginia to Gallipolis, Ohio. In 1967, on the 15th of December, the structure collapsed during rush-hour traffic which resulted in the deaths of 46 people. Two of them were never recovered. The bridge collapsed due to overloading and the failure of one single eyebar in the suspension chain. Investigations revealed that the defect which had compromised the eyebar’s structural integrity was only 0.1 inches deep, had been caused
3: The Rafiganj Rail Disaster
The Rafiganj rail disaster which claimed the lives of at least 130 people was caused by a faulty colonial era bridge over North-Central India’s Dhave River. The Rajdhani Express, a train carrying more than one thousand people, derailed from the 300-foot-long bridge on the 10th of September, 2002, at approximately 10:40 pm. The accident took place near the town of Rafiganj and fifteen of the train’s eighteen cars fell from the tracks. Two of them went into the river below, sealing the fates of the passengers trapped inside. The powerful impact from the crash had also caused people from other carriages to be thrown into the river. The region’s poor roads hindered the efforts from rescuers and local military personnel
2: The Stirling Bridge
One of the earliest bridge collapses ever documented took place during the Battle of Stirling Bridge on September 11, 1297. The bridge was a narrow wooden structure over the River Forth, near Stirling Castle. It served as a significant strategic point during the First War of Scottish Independence. The Scottish forces lead by William Wallace and Andrew Moray confronted the combined English forces of Hugh de Cressingham and the 6th Earl of Surrey, John de Warenne. Even though the Scottish forces were outnumbered, they used the bridge as a tactical advantage. Moray and Wallace waited for a significant number of English troops
1: The Hyatt Regency Walkway
In what is considered to be one of the deadliest structural collapses in the history of the United States, this disaster claimed the lives of 114 people and injured 216. The incident took place on the 17th of July, 1981, at the Hyatt Regency Kansas City hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. The hotel was opened on the 1st of July 1980. Its most distinctive features were the walkways which were suspended from the ceiling in the hotel’s lobby. They were made out of steel and glass each weighing around 64.000 pounds and measuring around 120 feet. The second level walkway was aligned directly below the fourth level walkway. On July 17th, in the evening, approximately 1600 people had gathered in the hotel lobby to watch and take part in a tea dance party. At the same time 40 people were watching it from the second walkway. 16 to 20 people were watching it from the fourth. A design flaw concerning the support beams for the forth walkway and the steel tie rods meant to carry the weight of both bridges made it barely possible for the structures to stand on their own. Once people started

UFO Sighted Over Clair-Mel, Tampa, Florida ( March 11, 2018 )
UNEDITED WITNESS STATEMENT : On Sunday March 11th, 2018 a fairly bright light hovering in the sky caught my attention. Upon further inspection I can make out a disk shape in the sky basically parked in place. I'm always looking up hoping to see UFO's but I'm a semi-skeptical person. So I stare at if for a while. My little brother is fairly close to me, he follows my gaze and then rolls his eyes and says Izzy relax, its probably just a plane. To which I respond No David, look. See behind that thing? Moving slowly with the light? THATS a plane and I point at a plane clearly visible much much farther BEHIND the object, moving slowly, and clearly identifiable by its blinking red navigation light.
This proved two things. The object was definitely parked in place, and it was not an ordinary aircraft because although the sun has set at 7:36, it was around 7:45 at the time and it was still bright out. NOT bright enough for a normal aircraft to have its brights on. The airplane cruising in the far distance only had a faint plane-shaped figure with no other lights on other than its red blinking navigation lights. We both agree that this is weird, and as he continues to go on with his business (he was washing our mothers vehicle at the time of the incident) I decide to take out my phone and take a video of it.
At this moment two things begin to happen. My mother comes out of her adobe and I point at the UFO and tell her mom look, it has NOT moved and as I say those words I notice that there has been a change in the object. The previously bright shining constant light emitted from the bottom of the aircraft has turned into a single light circling around and around the base of the aircraft. After a few cycles, the light sequence changes yet again, but this time it does a sequential light signal pointing in the direction it is about to zoom to. After three sequences it zooms at an impossible speed.
Not only was it fast, because that could be explainable. If it were a common aircraft we would have seen:
-An obvious acceleration. There was no acceleration. In fact I was so amazed by how fast it moved that I excitedly hoped this was only the beginning and it was only accelerating, and hurriedly try to get an early glimpse of it past the trees that are momentarily blocking the view. But it didn't. It went on a fairly constant but very fast speed.
-Exhaust. There was no exhaust or trail or nothing behind this craft.
-The tail of the aircraft tip or dip towards the direction it was going. It didn't. It stayed evenly parallel to the ground and moving at a constant speed.
Turbulence due to weather. It was obviously cloudy and relatively windy that day. At the height we saw it at it should have experienced some type of turbulence, or some movement up and down as the pilot adjust to the conditions. There was none of that. The object cut through everything and there was nothing affecting its perfectly horizontal movement.
To move that fast that relatively close, we SHOULD have been able to hear it, even if the soundwaves were delayed due to distance and height. Planes flying that low that close would have been very loud. This was not. It was silent.
I was always the type to not believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. I'm just glad of three things:
I happened to witness it AND capture it on video at the same time for the first time AND wasn't the only one who saw it.
Would love to know your thoughts. Drop it in the comments below. Don't be afraid to make your own deductions and keep looking up!
