Livonijas ordeņa pils – Ventspils Muzejs (Замок Ливонского ордена, Castle of the Livonian Order)
Ventspils Castle (German: Windau) is located in Ventspils, Latvia. It is one of the oldest and most well-preserved Livonian Order castles remaining, in that it has retained its original layout since the 13th century. Through its 700-year history, it has been used as a fortress, residence, garrison, school, military base, and prison. In 1995, the castle was restored to its 19th-century appearance, and was converted into a museum.
Ventspils castle was built in the second half of the 13th century, and controlled by the Livonian Order until the mid-16th century. As a part of the Duchy of Courland, the castle was the residence of the city master, but during the Polish-Swedish War it was destroyed.
After reconstruction in 1650, the chapel became a Lutheran church (1706–1835) and later a Russian Orthodox church (1845–1901), but the rest of the castle remained largely unused. In 1832 the 3rd floor was converted into a prison, which closed in 1959. After World War II, the castle was used for various administrative purposes, and occupied by the Soviet Army border patrol until the 1980s.
In 1997, the castle was restored, and in 2001 the permanent exhibition of the Ventspils museum opened in the tower. Today the castle hosts concerts and art exhibitions as well.

Ventspils (Latvia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Ventspils in Latvia.
Ventspils is located on the Black Sea in the north of Latvia’s west coast and since the thirteenth century has been a city of sailors. From the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries it was member of the German Hanse and in the middle of the seventeenth century a shipyard was built for warships and merchant ships, which led to the prosperity of the city. On the banks of the Venta River is the only castle of the Order Of The Princedom Of Kurzeme, built by the Livonian Order at the end of the thirteenth century. The harbour has been well-developed and boasts a long history, from the Wenden Tribe and the Crusaders, right up to the present day. A trip around the harbour highlights the fact that Ventspils is the most important port in Latvia and from where oil from Siberia is loaded as well as chemical products and also wood and fish. After the Northern War and a devastating plague, the city lay in ruins and the harbour, unused. However, following the extension of the harbour at the end of the nineteenth century, life returned. When, in 1904, a rail link was opened to Moscow and Rybinsk, the harbour became important once again. In this region, people have always lived by the sea and the ice-free harbour gave rise to Ventspils’ deserved prosperity.

Description
Ventspils, Latvija, 01.10.2013.g. (Вентспилс, Латвия)
Ventspils developed around the Livonian Order Ventspils Castle, built along the Venta River. It was chartered in 1314 and became an important mercantile city of the Hanseatic League.
As part of the Duchy of Courland, Ventspils blossomed as a shipbuilding center. 44 warships and 79 trading ships were built in the town, and it was from Ventspils that the Duke's fleet set out to colonize Gambia and Tobago. Metal, amber, and wood-working shops also became important to the city's development.
During the Polish-Swedish War and the Great Northern War, Ventspils was destroyed, and in 1711 a plague wiped out most of the remaining inhabitants. Ventspils fell under the control of Imperial Russia and its re-growth was stalled.
It was not until about 1850 that shipbuilding and trade became important again. The port was modernized in the 1890s and connected to Moscow by rail. It became one of Imperial Russia's most profitable ports, by 1913 turning a yearly profit of 130 million rubles. The population soared as well, growing from 7,000 in 1897, to 29,000 in 1913.
During the German occupation from 1915--1919, the population decreased almost by half, though some returned home during the First Republic of Latvia (1918--1940).
In 1939, the Red Army established a base in Ventspils. Under Soviet rule, an oil pipeline was built to Ventspils, and became USSR's leading port in crude oil export. Thirty kilometres north of Ventspils is the ex-Soviet radioastronomy installation VIRAC (Ventspils Starptautiskais Radioastronomijas Centrs or Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre). The existence of the Centrs was unknown to most Latvians until 1994. After independence, the Latvian government began a city-beautification process to make the city more attractive to tourists.
In 2004, Ventspils was a host city for a multi-national (United States, United Kingdom, Poland, Sweden, Russia, Latvia, Denmark, Finland, Norway) naval exercise called Baltic Operations XXXIII (BALTOPS). The force was led by the guided missile cruiser USS Anzio and the destroyer USS Cole. The US vessels were the first American warships to visit the port of Ventspils since Latvian independence was declared

Sculpture of Valdemars
Sculpture of Valdemars is a nice example how recently created attributes of town could easily become main symbols. It is a place quite frequently used in Ventspils postcards; it is very famous place for taking photos. Monument to Krisjanis Valdemars was built in 2000 by Miervardis Polis.
Fountain Ship watcher
“Ship watcher” was constructed in 2002 by Rita Dobicina and Igors Dobicins. It is made of red granite, shape as a head and turned into water side. Instead of hair is water spurts. Seems it looks into ships around.
