The Catacombs Of Paris
The Catacombs of Paris (Catacombes de Paris) are underground ossuaries in Paris, France which hold the remains of over six million people in a small part of the ancient Mines of Paris tunnel network. Located south of the former city gate Barrière d’Enfer (Gate of Hell) beneath Rue de la Tombe-Issoire, the ossuary was founded when city officials were faced with two simultaneous problems: a series of cave-ins starting in 1774 and overflowing cemeteries.

Catacombs Transcript:
So welcome to the Catacombs underneath the beautiful city of Paris!
It’s a barrel of bones!
I think I’m gonna see dead people!
Down to the Catacombs…woooooo
So we’ve entered the Catacombs and this is pretty insane. The bones of thousands and thousands of Parisians are piled one on top of another. And they were brought here because the Plague was, disease was like running rampant at the time from the cemeteries seeping into the water system and everything so this is why they’re in the Catacombs. Pretty intricate work how all the bones are stacked on top of each other with the skulls on top.
All the bones here in the Catacombs are stacked in sections and in front of each one is the sign which tells you where the bones came from, which cemetery as well as what date they were all stacked here. Pretty organized!
These old limestone quarries were used to house all of the remains from the other cemeteries, they were moved here, the bones were stacked upon one another. This happened from the late 1700’s to the late 1800’s to help curb disease, and to store all of the bones.
It just goes on and on and on. Corridors everywhere all underneath Paris.
Alison Teal Surfing The Catacombs
I was invited to France to speak at the Environmental World Forum and while in Paris we filmed a yet to be released Alison’s Adventures episode - “Surfing Paris” where I paddle near iconic places in the city to make a environmental statement that if we do not protect our oceans we will end up surfing in fountains, dirty rivers, or in the depths of places like the Catacombs.
This clip is part of a larger film with an important message - human beings depend upon fresh water for survival AND the sea creatures depend upon a healthy ocean for survival - not to mention if the oceans die, we die.
When I was invited to paddle through the Catacombs, coming upon the bones while we were in the old mining chamber was very unexpected and shocking to me and I did my best to keep my composure, not freak out, and follow those who did not speak my same language out of the claustrophobic maze. True survival. I meant no disrespect, and the last thing I wanted to do was climb over them to get out.
It's wild to think that all these bones were dumped there and I hope this film brings awareness to this mind-blowing situation and that they are given a proper burial and resting place. The Catacombs is a mine, not a grave, however, a portion of it became the largest grave on earth when a series of cave-ins starting in 1774 by extracting the rock for buildings, and overflowing cemeteries, caused the city take the bones from their original resting place and pile them in the tunnels - and thus many refer to the entire maze as a grave.
I had no intention of surfing a grave.
It is also wild to see what the media has done with my story for Halloween - but that I can't control, and I promise to use the virility of the story to once again change the world!
LOST AND ALONE IN THE PARIS CATACOMBS
Right then. This one didn't really go to plan. On my last few days in Paris, I decided it would only be right if I made a trip to the Paris Catacombs. So, after hitting up the legal tour, I planned a trip to the less legal ones, but ended up going deeper in than I'd planned. Lost for almost 3 hours, it didn't go at all as planned, but luckily I didn't end up missing.
History: The catacombs started life as a huge limestone mine, but in the latter half of the 18th century, in 1786, these quarries were consecrated, turning them into the Paris Catacombs . This happened when grave sites began to become too overpopulated. All the bones from the Les Innocents Cemetery were transferred to the catacombs over the space of 2 years due to them becoming too full. However over the following decades, the bones of the dead were removed from cemeteries around Paris for reburial in the catacombs, before the burying of the newly dead in the catacombs began after the French Revolution. There are roughly 6 million people buried under there now, in the 200 mile long network of tunnels. Anyway, enjoy the vid guys...

The Catacombs of Paris (documentary)
With its long history of bloody wars and executions, the ruling people of France had to figure out a way to bury all of the dead corpses. One city in particular was beginning to have this problem over time. In my first ever documentary, we will be going in great depth to the history and eerie place that is the Catacombs of Paris, located beneath the administrative district of Petit-Montrouge, as well as found footage of a man who was supposedly lost in the tunnels.

Paris Catacombs - Paris Underground
The dark side of the City of Light... Discover the mysterious places lying under the city. An amazing journey in the belly of the French capital. Images from the book Paris Underground available at:
Catacombs, Paris France (Scariest Place On Earth) v1.1 (Part 2)
It has been said that there were once more than 600km of galleries that stretched under the streets of Paris. One can find stone mining remains from Roman and medieval times at the surface level. To find the best deposits formed by harder rocks, the mining descended from the surface deep underground, to slowly extend, from gallery to gallery, an anarchic network of access tunnels.
WARNING Paranormal Activity At The Paris Catacombs Caught On Camera
we entered the haunted paris catacombs, and faced many challenges such as people who live inside the tunnel, as well as claustrophobic tunnels and human bones.strange paranormal activity started to occur but to top it off, our worst fears came true... we got lost. tune in to find out more!!
Inside the Catacombs of Paris
The catacombs of Paris is the final resting place of millions of bones. Due to overpopulation and lack of sanitary conditions around cemeteries, the water became contaminated and became a source of infections around the area. In the 18th century the bones of Paris' dead were moved from their cemeteries to this abandoned stone mine.
We visited the Catacombs of Paris during our April 2011 travel. I was nervous at first because it's underground and I've recently discovered I was claustrophobic after I did the Scavi tour in Rome. It was something different. It wasn't scary at all, nor did I feel claustrophobic. There were plenty of space and enough light to see.
What I felt wasn't fear. In fact it felt tranquil and serene in the catacombs. Layers and layers of skeletons were piled high and wide along the walls and you can't help wonder who these people were. I felt sadness that this is the resting place of so many, and to be unknown in a pile of millions.
