Things to do in Hahndorf, South Australia
There are so many things you can do at Hahndorf but before I start telling you about them, let me tell you a little about Hahndorf.
Hahndorf was established in 1839 and remains the oldest German town in South Australia and visiting the town will take you a few years back and reminds you of what it was like those day as we experienced at The Cedars so here are the many things you can do there.
Our first visit was to the most loved family strawberry farm, The Beerenberg Strawberry farm. Every time I visit this strawberry farm I leave with some freshly picked strawberries. If you watched the video you can see us going in the Beerenberg shop and we purchased a pass to go on the farm and pick our own strawberries.
I have also written more about this place over at our website:
Then we walked around the town and went into a few shops, very old styled and felt like we were some where else.
If you visit Hahndorf, please be sure to visit the German Village Shop and also be prepared to lose your mind in there.
If you love leather, John Leathersmith is for you, everything leather in there and is very old and dusty there for a great experience.
We strongly recommend going into Chocolate @ N.5 if you love really good chocolate as we were extremely impressed.
We also went into Hahndorf Academy, you will experience history here.
Our last stop was at the Cedars and everything in there was worth visiting, the history, the garden and the pool was all worth visiting.

Hans Heysen House
Last weekend we did a visit of the Hans Heysen House; The Cedars, just outside Hahndorf. An enjoyable walk around the gardens and his studio and also learnt quite a lot about the man and his art. Also his daughter Nora became an accomplished artist and her works were also on display. Overall a great trip into the Adelaide Hills.
Sir Hans Heysen OBE (8 October 1877 – 2 July 1968) was a German-born Australian artist. He became a household name for his watercolours of monumental Australian gum trees. Heysen also produced images of men and animals toiling in the Australian bush, as well as groundbreaking depictions of arid landscapes in the Flinders Ranges. He won the Wynne Prize for landscape painting a record nine times.
By 1912 Hans Heysen had earned enough from his art to purchase a property called The Cedars near Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills, which remained as his home until his death in 1968 aged 90. Hans Heysen is best remembered for his remarkable paintings depicting sheep and cattle among massive gum trees against a background of stunning atmospheric effects of light.
The Heysen Trail; which is named after Hans Heysen, is one of the world's great walking trails and the longest dedicated walking trail in Australia. The 1,200 km trail starts at Cape Jervis and winds along the beaches and sea cliffs of the south coast before passing over rolling hills and rural landscapes of the Fleurieu Peninsula and Mt Lofty Ranges. Beyond Mt Bryan, the trail crosses over to the rugged peaks and valleys of the Flinders Ranges as it heads to Parachilna Gorge where it ends.
Best watched in HD.
As always just having a bit of fun and sharing the sites of South Australia that we have visited.
Take care and stay safe.

The Haus Hahndorf - Hans Heysen Watercolour Unveiling (The Camp on the Wonoka Creek)
Saturday, August the 12th, 2017 saw Hans Heysen's masterpiece 'The Camp on the Wonoka Creek' return home to Hahndorf.
The painting, which is thought to be Heysen’s largest watercolour, was discovered in a private collection in Germany where the famous artist was born. The masterpiece was then picked up by an international art dealer and sent back to South Australia.
The Duffield Family (owners of The Haus Restaurant) saw it as their opportunity to preserve the Heysen legacy in Hahndorf when the auction for the watercolour was announced.
An extremely competitive auction saw the watercolour eventually sell for $110,000 - well above the estimated $60,000 price point.
The masterpiece is available for all to see at The Haus Restaurant - 38a Main Street, Hahndorf SA 5245.
