The scientific revolution in 17th century Europe stimulated innovation and discovery in Britain. The landmark and storied Timmins Estate near the peak of Mount Royal offers not only panoramic views of the entirety of Montreal and beyond, but is also seen as this city's premiere property.
Comprised of the main house (10br, 9ba, 3 powder rms) and an attached coach house (3br, 2ba, 1 powder rm - also available, but not included in this listing) and sitting on 43,000 sq. feet of land, this majestic Jacobean stone mansion was designed by famed architects Ross and Macfarlane and built in 1910 for Lieutenant-Colonel Charles A. Smart. It was later occupied by mining and railroad magnate Jules Timmins, the founding father of Canada's mining industry, and the property was known thereafter as the Timmins Estate.
Over the years, the Estate has hosted prime ministers, presidents and other notables, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and chess prodigy Anatoly Karpov.
Enter 14 Sunnyside through a grand front exterior courtyard, whose stone double-staircase from street level is framed by a custom wrought iron fence designed by legendary McGill architectural professor Percy Nobbs. The spacious courtyard is ringed by a garden of lovely plantings that match the seasons. Entering the house through massive custom-made and artisan-carved double-wood doors, you are led into a luxurious vestibule and grand foyer with ten-foot ceilings, marble floors, and a wood-burning fireplace whose mantel is custom-made marble. His and hers dressing/powder rooms are on either side, and the magnificent Spanish-style staircase leading to the upper floors is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that bathe this entryway in natural light.
Turn toward the East Wing of this mansion, and you enter an English-style library with carved walnut floor-to-ceiling bookcases, built-in storage, a fireplace and a concealed wet bar, all bathed in light from a huge bay and other windows.
Adjacent is the garden-like atrium/conservatory with marble floors, a delicately arched ceiling with floral details carved in, and floor to ceiling windows on two sides, giving this space a garden-like feeling.
The conservatory flows into the grand living room, which features two distinct seating areas with more than enough room for a grand piano and entertaining. The double-doors in each area open onto an impressive private stone terrace that overlooks the garden below, and the city and the St. Lawrence River beyond.
Double doors lead to the formal dining room, which also has a large bay window offering the same magnificent views.
The spacious kitchen features expansive stone countertops, and a large center island with an integrated Wolf ceramic induction cooktop and fan. The kitchen is also equipped with a double wall oven, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and dishwasher, as well as abundant drawers and storage areas. Adjacent are a butler's pantry with sink and additional storage, a staff dining room, a mudroom leading to the staff entrance and access to the lower floor.
Ascend the grand staircase to the second floor and you step into another grand foyer, from which the Master Suite awaits on the East Wing. The spacious bedroom features double his-and-hers closets, and a private sitting area with bay windows that offer the city view. Two ensuite bathrooms include a stunning Cartier marble vanity in hers with city views, and in his, a double-sized Jacuzzi soaking tub, a large double-shower, and a reading lounge, making this space the perfect spa oasis. Adjacent to the bedroom is a full-sized custom dressing room that can easily be converted into an office or nursery.
In the center of the second floor, there is a den with a fireplace and French doors that lead out to a private grand balcony with the city and St. Lawrence views.
