Today we are doing one of the free things to do in Milford Sound which is the walk to The Chasm. The Chasm Walk is located between The Homer Tunnel and Milford Sound on the Milford Road and was one of the activities we missed the other day, so we thought we’d check out this awesome force of nature.
The Chasm Walk is only about a 20 minutes loop walk on a super accessible track. It’s a great taste of Fiordland National Park forest and an excellent short walk in Fiordland National Park.
What’s more, if you are looking for something free in Milford Sound, then this is a good Milford Sound free activity!
So what do you think of The Chasm? Would you do this free walk in Milford Sound or stop by it on the Milford Sound Road? LUK in the comments!

-- About this video --
Today we are doing two of the free walks in Milford Sound. The Milford Sound Lookout Walk and the Milford Sound Foreshore Walk. They are both super short, only 20 minutes each, so if you have some spare time in Milford Sound or are just visiting Milford Sound on a budget, then these walks are well worth considering.
Both of these walks are accessed at the waterfront of Milford Sound (Milford Sound Marina) so we hit the Milford Sound Lookout Walk first, 10 minutes uphill through forest until we reach a viewing platform with trees framing those famous views of Milford Sound including Mitre Peak, Sinbad Gully, Lion Rock and Stirling Falls.
Next, we check out the Milford Foreshore Walk which is a 20 minute loop through beech forest to the open views on the Milford Sound waterfront. Here are where you can get some of the best photos of Milford Sound!

-- About this video --
Today we are finally leaving Te Anau and taking the Milford Sound road to Milford Sound. We’re taking a whole day to do this because there are so many awesome things to do on the Milford Road along the way!
We hit State Highway 94, the Milford Road between Te Anau and Milford Sound. First stop for us is the Eglinton Valley – a 2km wide valley with unreal scenery. There’s plenty of space to park up safely and embrace! Next, we stop at the Mirror Lakes, a short walk to a super reflective lake.
There are many safe viewing areas and lookouts to pull up to along the Milford Sound Road to see the Hollyford Valley and array of waterfalls on a rainy day like today.
Next we stop at the famous Homer Tunnel carved right through the granite of the Darren Mountains. It took around 20 years to build and is the start of our descent into Milford Sound. We arrive in an amazing valley of glacier-carved mountains and Fiordland National Park forest. This has to be one of the best roads in New Zealand.
Tonight we are staying in one of the only accommodation in Milford Sound, The Milford Sound Loge.
So what do you think of the Road to Milford Sound? Do you think it’s worth taking your time on? LUK in the comments!

Lady Bowen Falls 162 m Milford Sound New Zealand - Anil Kumar
The permanent Lady Bowen Falls at 162 m is the highest and the most powerful waterfall in the world's famous Milford Sound. You enjoy its beauty immediately after boarding the cruise.
Te Anau - Milford Sound Highway : Road to the Milford Sound New Zealand
I decided to base myself in the little town of Te Anau. The gateway to the Fiordland National Park of South Island New Zealand. Perhaps the highlight of a trip to New Zealand is visiting the Milford Sound. A fiord valley which opens out to the Tasman sea. The road leading to the sound is called the Te Anau-Milford Sound Highway and is perhaps amongst the scenic road I have ever had the chance to be on. It was raining really hard today, and this part of New Zealand gets plenty of rain due to its location. Some people would prefer to visit Milford Sound on a sunny day. But I would rather it rain like it did and see a million waterfalls cascading down the mountain sides. Truly spectacular. I decided to join a day trip tour group with Jucy Cruize, they provided round-trip transportation to Milford Sound from Te Anau, a 1 hour boat cruise, and a small lunch meal. The driver was really informative as he drove the small shuttle bus and gave really great commentaries about the history and the surrounding area. music by Setu-Firestorm
Kayaking in Milford Sound – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 148: Today we are kayaking in Milford Sound with Rosco’s Milford Kayaks! Join us to see what it’s like to kayak in Milford Sound as we do an early morning kayaking tour in Milford Sound. It’s part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities!

-- About this video --
Yesterday, you saw us cruise in Milford Sound. Now today, see what it’s like to kayak in Milford Sound! It’s the more active and adventurous way to explore Milford Sound!
We head down to the Roscos Milford Kayaks base where we get kitted out with thermals and hats for the Morning Glory kayaking tour. It’s the early morning kayaking tour in Milford Sound. It’s also one of the more adventurous tours with a lot of paddling as we are going to be covering a lot of water today.
He hit the water in a double kayak and paddle toward our first sight, Sinbad Gully. We are told heaps of information about the geology and history of Milford Sound by our knowledgably Milford Sound kayaking guide.
After kayaking along the edge of Milford Sound and right underneath it’s mountains, we cross Milford Sound to aim for Stirling Falls. We even kayak under Stirling Falls only to be swept away by the force of the 151m waterfall. Next, we arrive at a seal colony where we get closer to the seas than even before in our kayaks.
The Morning Glory Tour with Rosco’s Milford Sound Kayaks usually takes kayakers out to the end of Milford Sound, but because the weather is looking bad, the tour is cut short and we are picked up by water taxi halfway through Milford Sound.
So what do you think of a kayak tour in Milford Sound. Is this the way you would see Milford Sound? LUK in the comments.
