Two sentenced following store ram-raids
Two men have been jailed following a number of break-ins at stores across the country – some of which included vehicles being driven into the premises.
Jamie Sylvester, 34, and Wayne Underwood, 49, were sentenced to a total of 10 years and two months after each pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary.
The charge relates to four burglaries and one attempted burglary which happened across Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Worcestershire in August and September this year.
Items stolen included thousands of pounds worth of electrical equipment including iPads and laptops as well as headphone sets and earphones.
Sylvester, of no fixed address, and Underwood, of Cherry Tree Court, Swadlincote, Leicestershire, admitted the offence when they previously appeared at Leicester Crown Court. Today, at the same court, Sylvester and Underwood were each sentenced to five years and one month imprisonment.
A Serious Crime Prevention Order of five years was also granted in the case of each defendant.
One of the burglaries happened at Curry’s PC World in St George’s Retail Park, Leicester, on 17 August. Police were called to the premises just after 11pm to find a silver Mitsubishi Space Star vehicle inside the premises having being driven through the metal roller shutters and glass.
Cabinets had been forced open with 34 laptops and 18 sets of headphones valued at a total of more than £17,000 taken. It was found the vehicle used in this incident had been bought in Leicester earlier that day.
The day before the incident, on 16 August, it was discovered in the morning that the rear entrance of the store had been attacked in an attempted burglary. No entry was gained. CCTV footage showed two people attempting to try and force the door open with crow bars the previous evening.
The other burglary offences were committed at:
- Sainsbury’s in Oadby, Leicester, on 13 August. CCTV showed two people using weapons to attempt to smash glass at the entrance to the petrol station kiosk. Entry was gained leading to a smoke screen being activated. Nothing was taken from the scene.
- Curry’s PC World in Mansfield, Nottingham, on 28 August. Enquiries carried out by Nottinghamshire Police showed a red Renault Megane vehicle had been driven through the main entrance of the premises just after 12.35am. More than £5,000 worth of earphones and headphones were stolen. It was found the vehicle used had been bought on the evening of 27 August.
- Curry’s PC World in Evesham, Worcestershire on 4th September. Two people were seen on CCTV taking over £23,000 pounds of electrical equipment including iPads, tablets and laptops.
Police investigative work including analysing CCTV, identifying the vehicles used, carrying out phone work and obtaining forensic samples linked the defendants to the crimes leading to their arrests.
Detective Constable Fiona Day said: “Sylvester and Underwood had no concern for others or for the dangers they were causing when they carried out their crimes - they were only concerned about what they could gain. The consequences of their actions could have been far worse.
“This has been a thorough investigation involving both Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire Police and I want to thank everyone who has worked on this case. I also want to thank the victims of these offences, and witnesses, who have fully co-operated with us and assisted us throughout this investigation leading to these convictions.”
A confiscation order of £310 was made against Underwood and a confiscation order of £1 was made against Sylvester.

81 acre Georgian Estate
This classic Georgian home incorporates the architectural elements and attention to details characteristic of many fine homes designed in the colonial period. Centered amid an 80-acre wooded ridge top in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this beautiful property offers the ultimate secluded retreat. The 4,000 square-foot, custom-built home consists of 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, 10-foot ceilings, and parquet flooring throughout. Intricate details in the woodwork, moldings, wainscoting, and trim eloquently decorate the interior with a colonial flair, while modern features make this a very comfortable home. The master bedroom is conveniently located on the first floor, with additional larger-than-average bedrooms on the second floor and in the partially finished basement. All of the bedrooms feature en suite bathrooms and walk-in closets. Roomy living spaces are also included on each floor. Custom-built cabinetry and shelving is abundant throughout the house, including two 10'-tall bookshelves in the library. Ample storage space is also available in the attic, basement, and two-car garage. The home's temperature is regulated using an external wood stove during the winter months. During the summer, the mountain canopy helps the super-insulated house stay cool in an eco-friendly and cost efficient manner. A heat pump is available to provide additional climate control in all seasons. With magnificent vistas of the neighboring countryside and rolling mountains, it is easy to see why the site was selected to be the location for this majestic beauty reminiscent of colonial times. Formal landscaping typical of the colonial era complements the house and grounds. Enjoy the start of each day on the covered deck or one of two covered balconies to watch the sunrise and finish the evening on the walled courtyard above the partially underground garage as the sun descends in the west. The natural setting of the surrounding woods keeps landscaping upkeep at a minimum. The woods explode in color in the fall and the mix of evergreens and hardwood trees provide rich foliage throughout the year. Numerous trails on the property offer endless opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and nature walks. The area is a haven for wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, foxes, and many species of songbirds. Access to the Appalachian Trail and Rural Retreat Lake are just minutes away by car. The property is also located conveniently near the Mt. Rogers Recreational Area, the New River, and the Jefferson National Forest, each offering additional opportunities to enjoy nature through hiking, hunting, fishing, or riding. This treasure is also within close proximity to medical, shopping, and educational needs and is approximately 6 miles from the interstate and about the same distance from Mt. Empire general aviation airport. Contact Mitch Anders for more information on this classic home and very private property at 276-724-0166 or mitch@mitchanders.com.
