Mastic Products Chios Pyrgi - Interview with the Locals
There are many shops selling mastic products all over the island but we especially liked the Manos' shop in Pyrgi . You can buy gifts from there with a more suitable price than the center of Chios Town. Furthermore, Manos is a very funny guy and you will have nice time by chatting with him. He treated each of as to a mastiq liqueur and some sugar. There are many types of products like coffee, sweets, self care goods, glasses, trinkets etc... In the video you can meet with Manos and see his shop in Pyrgi:)

Το Μουσείο Μαστίχας Χίου βρίσκεται στα Μαστιχοχώρια, σύνολο μεσαιωνικών χωριών στη Νότια Χίο, στο μοναδικό σημείο της Μεσογείου όπου καλλιεργείται ο σχίνος της ποικιλίας Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia, από τον οποίο παράγεται η μαστίχα.
Το Μουσείο Μαστίχας Χίου σκοπεύει να αναδείξει την παραγωγική ιστορία της καλλιέργειας και την επεξεργασίας της μαστίχας, την οποία εντάσσει στο πολιτιστικό τοπίο της Χίου. Μέσα από το πρίσμα της εγγραφής από την UNESCO της παραδοσιακής μαστιχοκαλλιέργειας στον Αντιπροσωπευτικό κατάλογο της Άυλης Πολιτιστικής Κληρονομιάς της Ανθρωπότητας, το 2014, έμφαση δίνεται στη διαχρονία και την αειφορία του χιώτικου αυτού προϊόντος.
Η μόνιμη έκθεση πραγματεύεται τη μαστίχα Χίου ως μοναδικό φυσικό προϊόν. Στην εισαγωγή, μαθαίνουμε για το σχίνο και τη μαστίχα, την ρητίνη που το 2015 αναγνωρίστηκε ως φυσικό φάρμακο. Στην πρώτη ενότητα ανακαλύπτουμε την παραδοσιακή τεχνογνωσία της μαστιχοκαλλιέργειας. Στην δεύτερη ενότητα παρατηρούμε πώς η διαχείριση της μαστίχας ιστορικά διαμόρφωσε το αγροτικό και οικισμένο τοπίο της νότιας Χίου και των Μαστιχοχωρίων. Στην τρίτη ενότητα ενημερωνόμαστε για τη συνεταιριστική εκμετάλλευση και μεταποίηση της μαστίχας στους νεότερους χρόνους, που σηματοδοτεί ένα σημαντικό κεφάλαιο της παραγωγικής ιστορίας της Χίου. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά γίνεται στις χρήσεις με τις οποίες η μαστίχα σήμερα ταξιδεύει σε όλον τον κόσμο. Η μουσειακή εμπειρία ολοκληρώνεται στην υπαίθρια έκθεση, στην οποία το κοινό έρχεται σε επαφή με το φυτό και το φυσικό περιβάλλον στο οποίο ευδοκιμεί.

info:Pyrgi is one of the largest and most impressive villages of Chios and probably the most famous. As a settlement it is one of the most well-preserved and picturesque of Greece, since its medieval appearance remains unchanged. Its archaeological, architectural, folklore and linguistic significance make it one of the most important and interesting villages for researchers and tourists Greeks and foreigners since the Middle Ages.
Its characteristics are, the Tower around which the present village was built, the large central square (the so-called “meadow” by the locals), the narrow streets with their arches and of course the famous “scratches”, the black geometric motifs on white background decorating the facades of the houses.
Pyrgi is one of the most important mastic villages, as the traditional cultivation of mastic is one of the main occupations of the locals. The museum of mastic that was recently erected in the wider area of the village, confirmed the intimate close relationship of the Pyrgi locals with this very special product and attracts a host of visitors.
The nearest beaches are of exceptional beauty and are unique among them, combining different landscapes: Mavra Volya, Karida, Agia Dynami, Kato Fana, Vroulidia, Komi etc.

Mastika je smola zimzelenog grma tršlje (Pistacia lentiscus L.). Jedinstvena sorta P. lentiscus cv Chia uzgaja se isključivo na grčkom otoku Chios, 1997.g dobila je EU oznaku proizvoda sa zaštićenim geografskim podrijetlom.
Europska unija je 2015.g upisala Chios mastiku u biljnu monografiju kao tradicionalni biljni lijek za liječenje dispeptičkih poremećaja.
Exploring Culture-Rich Chios in Greece
In this week's episode we're heading to one of the most cultural and history rich islands in Greece, the beautiful island of Chios! We check out the beautiful medieval villages of Pyrgi, Mesta and Olympoi and we check out a lovely secluded bay at Agia Dynami.
This island was such a surprise for us. From the incredible Mastic cultivation and history to the symmetrically patterned buildings, this was our biggest surprise in the country.
There weren't the breathtaking beaches of Kefalonia or the grand old town architecture of Corfu, but Chios had something special and we can't wait to return one day soon!

Chios Harbour, Greece
Chios (Greek: Χίος) is the main town on the Greek island of Chios, in eastern Aegean. It is located on the eastern coast of the island facing the Turkish coastal town of Cesme. The town has a population of 32,000 and is the administrative capital and main port of both the island and of the prefecture of Chios. Chios town also constitutes the one and only municipal district within the Municipality of Chios, one of eight municipalities on the island.
The city is often locally referred to as Chora (χώρα; literally meaning town) or Kastro (Καστρο) to distinguish it from the entirely of the island with which it shares the name.
Originally the site of an ancient settlement, the town was first built at the north side of a natural harbour. By the 16th century, the walled town had been further fortified by successive rulers into a massive medieval castle, the Kastro.
The current town, has expanded out from the Kastro, and the port in the last 200 years. After the devastating earthquake of 1881, the town was substantially rebuilt in neoclassical style, although much of the quayside and outskirts are more modern. Although the population is relatively stable, the town continues to expand with suburbs being built to the north and south. Nevertheless, the centre of the town is still concentrated between the port and castle where the administration, several museums, the main shopping street Aplotaria, and the municipal gardens lie.

Chios is the capital of the province and has about 25,000 inhabitants. The city is a bustling port and commercial center. In the center of town stands the Byzantine museum with a variety of historical artifacts from the island's past. Modern Chios has been built on the site of the ancient city from which there exist a few survived findings – in particular the walls and the theater. The Castle is quite impressive. Originally built by the Byzantines as a fortress, it was significantly extended by the Genovese in the 14th century.
