Cholera monument grounds, Sheffield, UK
The Cholera Monument Grounds & Clay wood, gifted to the city of Sheffield by The Duke of Norfolk in 1930.
The Cholera Monument is a memorial in Sheffield, England, to the victims of a cholera epidemic of 1832.
402 victims of the disease were buried in grounds between Park Hill and Norfolk Park adjoining Clay Wood. Money from the treasurers of the Board of Health was set aside for a monument for the site.
The monument was designed by M. E. Hadfield, sculpted by Earp and Hobbs and completed in 1835. It is a neo-Gothic pinnacle and has a plaque naming John Blake, Master Cutler in 1832 and a victim of the epidemic and noting that the foundation stone was laid by poet James Montgomery.
The monument is situated in gardens laid out around the monument in the 1850s and next to Clay Wood, an ancient woodland. These were given to the city by the Duke of Norfolk in 1930. A shaded path built between 1971 and 1995 traverses the woods and leads from Fitzwalter Road to the monument gardens. The monument was struck by lightning in 1990 and the top removed for safety, rebuilding began in 2005 thanks to a grant and was completed in 2006.
A clay cobbled mound art installation was erected in 2004 representing the individuals who lost their lives.
The monument is grade II listed, and the grounds are a conservation area which had received a Green Flag Award.

Regeneration
In 2004, the monument was rebuilt and the grounds redeveloped with funding secured by the Friends Group, the majority of which came from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The site redevelopment included:
Rebuilding the monument
Improving access
Interpretation and art features
Lighting the monument
New furniture
New tree planting
Improvements to the planting
Clay Wood
Clay Wood is adjacent to the Cholera Monument Grounds. As there is no physical barrier between the two areas they effectively combine to form one larger open space. The informal, natural feel of the woodland complements the formal landscape of the grounds, and provides a wider range of experiences than is normal for a site of this size.
Features of the site

The monument is situated in gardens which is full of flowers in the spring and next to Clay Wood, an ancient woodland. There is seating available too. Walking up this area of the city, I discover new ways of viewing the city. This is a brand new perspective with most of the key architecture. It is close to Shrewsbury Hospital which is of historical interest & Norfolk Park.
In every direction from here, you can see the land rising above the city. And on the crisp cold January afternoons it looked stunning. With just the sound of birdsong, and the odd rumble of a tram, this was as far from life in a city centre as I’ve found thus far in Sheffield.

Sheffield Park Hill Estate views in October 2012. Regeneration by Urban Splash.
Park hill council estate was completed in 1961 and granted Grade II* listing in 1998.
Currently the flats are being renovated by developers Urban Splash.
When these flats were built they were described as streets in the sky, there are several Documentaries on the subject.
The graffiti you can see at the start of my video Clare Middleton I love you will u marry me is a famous bit of graffiti in Shefield and has been emphasised
by neon lighting over of the words.
If you visit Sheffield and would like to have a look around this estate then its best to walk through the railway station and to the SuperTram platform
then over the tracks and up the steps to the hill
Some points of note :
0:40 This is the regenerated section of the Park Hill flats by Urban Splash.
1:02 Look how much these regenerated flats are selling for now!, A stark comparison to the prices that these flats would have orignally been let for!
1:33 View from the hill looking towards the city centre of Sheffield.
2:39 A view of Sheffield Hallam University.
Hope you liked my little video of Sheffield filmed in early October 2012.

SHEFFIELD WALK | The Moor to Barkers Pool
SHEFFIELD WALK | A walk through Sheffield City Centre from The Moor to the Barkers Pool area.
Sheffield is under redevelopment so I thought I'd talk a walk from The Moor up to John Lewis in Barkers Pool for a look around the streets currently being developed and improved as part of the new retail quarter in Sheffield City Centre.
Filmed on Sony RX100 V Camera - Crane M Gimbal -
Edited on Apple MacBook Pro -
We start this walk at the top of the Moor. The Moor Quarter is one of Sheffield's twelve designated quarters, built around and named for The Moor, a pedestrianised thoroughfare. It is bound by Furnival Gate in the north-east, Eyre Street in the south-east, St Mary's Gate to the south, and Moore Street and Charter Row to the north-west.
We most from the top of The Moor across Furnival Gate and head up Pinstone Street before crossing over to Charles Street where we see the site of the old Athol hotel.
Walking up Charles Street this Sheffield tour continues as we pass the building that once houses Pollards Tea Shop before reaching the old Henry's Wine Bar building on Cambridge Street where we turn to walk up towards Barkers Pool.
Barker's Pool is a public city square and street in the centre of the City of Sheffield, England. The focus of Barker's Pool is the Grade II* listed 90-foot-tall (27 m) war memorial that was unveiled on 28 October 1925 to commemorate the First World War.
The Grade II* listed Sheffield City Hall is on the north side of the plaza facing a branch of the John Lewis Partnership, formerly Cole Brothers, on nearby Fargate.
At this point of this walk through the city of Sheffield we have John Lewis department store on our right and across the road we see Chubby's takeaway that's famous for it's chips and cheese for all the pub and club revellers turning out in the early hours of the morning!
We finally reach Barkers Pool and Sheffield City Hall and the War Monument outside John Lewis (formerly known as Cole Brothers).
Sheffield City Hall was opened in 1932 and has featured so many famous stars from The Beatles to Jimi Hendrix and One Direction.
Many Sheffield bands have played here too from The Human League to Pulp to Def Leppard.
For a final part of this Sheffield walk we head down Burgess Street to take a look at The Yorkshireman Rock Bar and finally The Athol Hotel rear entrance with it's colourful facade.
There's so much redevelopment happening in Sheffield I've split the walk around Sheffield into multiple videos so please subscribe to see them and enjoy them with me. I'm hoping to build up the videos into the ultimate guide to Sheffield.
Hope you find this Sheffield walk interesting or useful or both! (Let me know in the comments section below)
