Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth
While the current Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth (Basilica of the Annunciation) was built in 1969, its roots go way back to the 4th century when Emperor Constantine commissioned the construction of a church at this location. His mother, Helena, was traveling the area marking important locations in the life of Jesus. Here, she discovered a shrine in a cave that pilgrims treated as Mary’s childhood home. This is known as the “Grotto of the Annunciation” to this day. Constantine’s church existed until it was totally destroyed during the 7th century. Since that time, other churches were built and destroyed, until the version you see here today.
Roman Catholic tradition holds that the Annunciation occurred in Mary’s home, which is marked by Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth (the Basilica of the Annunciation). Greek Orthodox tradition maintains that the encounter happened while Mary was drawing water from a local spring. This is the location marked by the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth today.
NAZARETH: CHURCH of the ANNUNCIATION & the house of VIRGIN MARY ⛪✝️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the Church of the Annunciation (sometimes also referred to as the Basilica of the Annunciation) which is a church in Nazareth, in northern Israel. It was established over the site where the Catholic tradition holds to be the house of Virgin Mary, and where angel Gabriel appeared to her and announced that she would conceive and bear the Son of God, Jesus – an event known as the Annunciation. For this reason, the site and the city of Nazareth are among the most sacred places in the Christian world.

My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.
The Church of the Annunciation - Nazareth - Israel
The Church of the Annunciation (Hebrew: כנסיית הבשורה, Arabic: كنيسة البشارة, Greek: Εκκλησία του Ευαγγελισμού της Θεοτόκου), sometimes also referred to as the Basilica of the Annunciation is a church in Nazareth, in modern-day northern Israel; it was established in the place where, according to Roman Catholic tradition, the Annunciation took place. In other words, it is the location where Mary, the mother of Jesus, as a virgin, was visited by the Archangel Gabriel and told that she had been selected to be the mother of Jesus. The Greek Orthodox tradition holds that this event occurred while Mary was drawing water from the well in Nazareth, and erected St. Gabriel's Church at that alternate site.
The current church is a two-story building, erected over the site of an earlier Byzantine and Crusader church. Inside, the lower level contains the Grotto of the Annunciation, believed by many Christians to be the actual remains of the original childhood home of Mary.
Under Roman Catholic canon law, it enjoys the status of a minor basilica.
It is a historically significant site and may even be considered sacred within some circles of Christianity, especially Catholicism. The basilica attracts many Catholic, Anglican, and Eastern Orthodox Christian visitors every year.
A newly launched website gives millions of Christians across the world the opportunity to pray and light their own personal candles at the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, via the Internet. The site, mirezo.com,[1]was officially launched during the recent Feast of the Annunciation in 2007, the Christian holiday celebrating the revelation that the Virgin Mary would conceive Jesus. Once a user enters their personal prayer online, they can then watch over the Internet as a priest lights a candle in their name, and reads out their prayer.

The Church of the Annunciation Nazareth Israel
