The Citadel in Amman, Jordan

After I visited the Roman theatre, I took a ride over to the citadel for a self guided tour.
I normally use guides, but in this case time was limited and I wanted to do a lot more later that day including visit Jerash.
The citadel is located on a hilltop overlooking downtown Amman, and very easy to get to. All the taxi drivers know it. Organized tours will take you there or grab a tour guide on the spot.
Make sure to jump around the large blocks that make up the Temple of Hercules and gaze at his hand from the statue that was once there.
I think you'll laugh at the size of the hand, because the photos make it look enormous.

We're in Amman this morning and we're going to be checking out the Citadel which is right behind us. The fractured fingers we just saw were believed to have belong to Hercules but our guide said they looked a little bit too feminine, so no one actually really knows.

Here from the Citadel one of the things I'm enjoying the most are the wonderful panoramic views we've had walking all around the premises.
We're going to go visit the Palace that sits atop of the Citadel. It's in ruins now but let's go see what is left of it.
So the flag that we see in the background is actually the forth tallest flag in the world. It used to be third until Abu Dhabi took its place.

Tour of Amman, Jordan - Delicious JORDANIAN FOOD and Attractions!
Get more Amman travel tips, things to do, where to stay, and delicious food here:
On Day 3 of our trip to Jordan we stayed in Amman, and did lots of the major attractions in Amman, including the historical sites. We also explored downtown Amman, went to the local market, and at some more incredibly good food. Below is everything we did during this packed day of sightseeing in Amman.
1:10 - Shams El Balad Cafe - For breakfast we went to Shams El Balad Cafe, a very nice restaurant and cafe that specializes in local Jordanian food with a fresh and healthy, and also organic twist to it. The place itself is very nice, and sits on a hill overlooking the main downtown area of Amman. We ordered a variety of different food, including some manakish, which is a round of dough baked with toppings including cheese and herbs on top. I also really enjoyed the makdous, preserved eggplant stuffed with nuts, and a certain type of labneh with local herbs. Total price - 28 JD ($39.40) for 4 people
5:35 Amman Citadel - 3 JD ($4.22) - One of the most famous things to do in Amman is visit to Amman Citadel, which is the high point on the hill and formerly was one of the main areas of the city - the lookout and high place of Amman. Located at the Amman Citadel you’ll find layer upon layer of history, and can see all the different civilizations that have once called Amman home. I thought it was amazing, and I especially enjoyed the views of Amman from up there and the temple of Hercules.
7:38 Roman Amphitheater - 2 JD ($2.81) - Right down the hill from the Amman Citadel is the Roman Amphitheater, a stone theater carved into the side of the mountain. When we entered, there was a group of boys singing, and I decided to climb to the top for a view and I was amazing how the sound carried all the way to the top of the bleachers. An amazing historical site of visit.
8:54 Green Almonds and Downtown Amman - One of the best things to do in Amman in my opinion is to walk around downtown where all the action happens. There’s a big central market where you can buy just about anything you’re looking for, including a fresh wet market. When I visited Amman it happened to be almond season, and it was my first time to try green almonds. They were absolutely delicious, and tasted a bit like green apples.
13:01 Habibah Sweets - Probably one of the most famous things to eat in Amman is the kanefeh from a desserts spot in downtown called Habibah Sweets. There’s always a crowd of people standing outside waiting and eating kanafeh, which is a cheese based dessert. It’s pretty good, definitely a place you’ll need to visit in Amman if you enjoy food - especially for sweets. Price for 1 piece of kanafeh - 0.65 JD ($0.91)
14:22 Sufra Restaurant - For lunch we went to Sufra Restaurant, a very nice Jordanian food restaurant, located on Rainbow street. The food was excellent, but the main dish that really stood out to me was the Kofta bi tahini, a bed of minced meat, topped with potatoes and smothered in tahini sauce. Price - about 20 JD ($28.11) per person
19:50 Shawarma Reem and Amman Shawarma Street - Finally for dinner, we headed to what’s unofficially known as the shawarma street in Amman, where there’s about 8 different shawarma restaurants. One of the most famous is Shawarma Reem, for their beef and lamb shawarma - it was a perfect way to end the day.

The Citadel: Amman, Jordan | History
Located on the highest hill of Amman, the capital of Jordan, The Citadel or the Jabal al-Qala’a gives a bird’s eye view of the city and also a symbolic sense of history of the region. There is evidence of settlements going back to the Bronze Age (3300 - 1200 B.C.). Excavations there have revealed numerous Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic remains. You can spend hours here but the most striking sights here are the Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace.
Seen in this video are the hand and elbow fragments of a colossal statue from the Roman period with the Temple of Hercules in the background.

Citadel Ruins Amman Jordan Tour 2019
Towering above the capital city of Amman on a hill is the Amman Citadel. This historic site comprises a 1700 meter wall that dates back to the Bronze Age, the iconic Temple of Hercules, and the Umayyad Palace. With so many significant landmarks located one site, the Amman Citadel is arguably one of the best places to visit in Amman.
Location
The Amman Citadel is located on top of Jebel Al Qala’a, a hill in the city of Amman. The hill is situated 850 meters above sea level and overlooks the old city. It is located in the downtown area of Amman.
The area of the citadel dates back as far as the Bronze Age. It was during this period that it was fortified (around 1800 BCE). Since then the site has undergone many rebuilds and additional constructions during the Iron Age, Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad eras. As a result of the large number of constructions on this site, very little remains from the original Bronze Age citadel.
