Stourports Town Clock & floods
For more Albert Mogg videos click the big orange 'A' above.
This Town Clock plays an important part in Stourport on Severns history. It was built in 1813 by Samuel Thorpe. It stands on what is now the local Yacht Club which overlooks the wonderful canal basins. Many years ago it would have been very important for the locals going to work as they relied on its accuracy to be on time.
The dominance of the clock face has seen lots of changes over the years including a new Bridge in 1870. Its seen the River Severn freezing over. with cars driving on the ice and major flooding particularly in 2000 and 2010. And many more events.
The clock face and façade have been renovated but the inside workings are still original. The Stourport Town Council is responsible for the maintenance of the clock but who winds it up every Sunday and keeps the time accurate?
Features Cllr. Dave Little mayor of Stourport.
Pauline Annis, Chairman of the Civic Society does the narration.

Stourport Boat Club, Saturday Night Jazz - Bev Pegg
Stourport Boat Club, Saturday Night Jazz - 4 mins 36 secs
Written & performed by Bev Pegg
This song basically summarises the exciting beginning in April 1961 of the Severnside Jazz Club held at Stourport Boat Cub, overlooking the River Severn in North Worcestershire. The resident band was the newly formed “Blue Blood Jazzmen” who played to packed crowds of jiving young folks during the time of the Trad Boom. Soon the Beatles, The Rolling Stones and similar groups would gain rapid popularity causing the Trad Boom to end and the eventual demise of this club around 1964, together with many other jazz clubs in the UK.
(At the end of the song, it fades into a recording of The Blue Blood Jazzmen playing Royal Garden Blues on 7th April 1962, one year after the formation of the Severnside Jazz Club at Stourport Boat Club. This recording is of poor quality recorded by a 17/8” speed Phillips portable tape recorder.
The band line-up on this tune was Gordon Whitworth-trumpet,
Rick Vaughan-clarinet, Barry Phillips-trombone, Bev Pegg-guitar,
Phil Lawless-double bass & Ken Wright-drums.
The original line-up referred to in the song when the club started in April 1961 was Frank Rodgers-trumpet, Rick Vaughan-clarinet, Duncan Swift-trombone, Bev Pegg-guitar/banjo, Eric Harris-double bass & Allan Jones-drums.
