ANCIENT Classical Gardens in Suzhou, China
This video is from one of the classical gardens I visited in Suzhou.
Decoding Ancient Chinese Gardens (full program)
Suzhou is the heart and origin of the world’s oldest and most well known classical Chinese Gardens. These gardens are on UNESCO’s World Heritage site list. Lance, an architect, and Kelly, a landscape designer, from the SF Bay Area experience the synthesis of art, nature, and architecture from several masterpiece gardens in Suzhou, China. They also engage in different aspects of Suzhou’s culture.
These two travelers visit the Master of Nets Garden, which was designed and built during the Song Dynasty almost 1000 years ago. They traverse the rock maze of the Lion Forest Garden, and experience the tranquility of the Couple’s Retreat Garden and more.
Along they way, they see the architectural poetry of the garden-like Suzhou Museum, designed by the world famous architect, I.M. Pei, who also designed the Louvre in Paris.
An exciting excursion to the water town of Tongli, south of the Yangzte River Delta, exposes Lance and Kelly to ancient waterways, bridges and residential architecture. At the 100 year old restaurant, Songhe Lou, they savor Suzhou cuisine like the signature dish Song Shu Gui Yu (fried sweet and sour squirrel-shaped Mandarin fish).
Watch Lance and Kelly’s discovery of a distinctive culture as they decode ancient Chinese Gardens.

Couple's Retreat Garden (Suzhou, China)
Couple's Retreat Garden / 耦园 / 耦園 located in Suzhou is a famous classical Chinese garden. It is recognized with other classical Suzhou gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The original garden was built by Lu Jin, prefect of Baoning district, in 1874. It was purchased by Shen Bingcheng, the magistrate of Susong. who rebuilt it in its current form. He also changed the name to the Couple's Garden Retreat. This name refers to the garden's two parts and alludes to a couple. It is recognized with other classical Suzhou gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The 0.33 ha garden is divided into an east and west section by the residential core in the middle; an unusual composition for a classical garden. The eccentric design is continued in the form and details of many of the garden buildings, especially the Taoism Tower. The garden is located in the intersection of canals and is surrounded by water on three sides. It is accessible directly from the canal by boat. The West garden is composed of several structures grouped around a small grotto and a Library annex. It is structurally joined to the central residence. East Garden is the main garden of the complex. It consists of a grotto and pond ringed by a covered walkway that connects the structures. A smaller fruit orchard annex is attached.

China Unknown: Gardens Galore
Suzhou, northwest of Shanghai, is a mecca for garden lovers. Its classical gardens date back a thousand years, with 69 sites still preserved today.
Many of Suzhou’s classical gardens have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, including the “Master of the Nets” garden.
But Americans only need to travel as far Portland, Oregon, Suzhou’s sister city, to get a taste of Suzhou’s famous gardens. The Lan Su Chinese Garden in Portland was constructed in 2000 to mirror Suzhou’s “Master of the Nets” garden. And it’s a sight to see.
Get ready to be “in the know” about China’s classical gardens on both sides of the ocean.
