SYDNEY GPO CLOCKTOWER BELLS, MARTIN PLACE SYDNEY (WESTIN HOTEL)
Sydney GPO building is located in Martin Place. The building was built in various stages
The site was prepared in 1865, and was as stated built in stages. The Clocktower was the last stage. 5 bells were provided, 4 quater bells for Westminster chimes and one hour bell to chime the hour. The bells were cast in England by John Taylor and Son of Loughborough.
In 1942 fearing Japanese air raids the clock tower was dismantled and stored stone by stone at Maroubra telephone exchange.
LIke so many things after the war things were forgotten about and it was not until 1963 and a wave of public support that the clocktower was put back. The bells first sounded out on Anzac day 25th April 1964.
After many decade the bells fell silent again, the GPO moved out, the Westin Hotel had done a magnificent job in using the GPO building as part of its hotel and it has loveingly restored the bells once again to sound the time over Sydney
The hour bell wieghs 4978 Kgs and is Australia's second heaviest bell.
The details of the bell wieghts and diameter of the mouth of the bells was kindly provided by Taylors Acting Archivist George Dawson and appear below

For those who are not familiar with imperial bell wieghts I have done a conversion

This was a very rare opportunity I was given as very few members of the public are granted permission to do this due to my interest in Campanoogy and the fact my father worked for the only other Bell Foundry in England, The Whitechapel Bell Foundry est 1570.
I would like to make special mention to the Westin Hotel who are custodians of this fine building and it bells and for the kind permission and privilege granted to me to visit the bells.

Continuing on from their early success soirée returns with its latest instalment of day parties. This time they've hand picked one of Queensland's finest selectors for a 3HR VINYL set.
Rikki Newton:
Rikki Newton has been an unfaltering member of the Brisbane DJ community and one of its beacons for underground house and techno. Having earned a deserved reputation as an excellent warm-up DJ during a five-year residency at Family night club's infamous Uncle Bar - where he supported internationals such as Ben Watt, Carl Craig, Jimpster and Ame - he has since become a regular on line-ups for Auditree and Kana; recently supporting Henrik Schwarz and Huxley with the former of the two.
Rikki has also featured at Subsonic Music Festival, Spice, SASH and Circoloco in Sydney, and internationally in Prague, Brno (Czech Republic), Berlin and Salerno (Italy).
Equally well known as half of the team behind Subtrakt Events (which he established in 2007 and runs with good friend Adam Swain) Rikki has both hosted and played alongside international talents Dixon, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Steve Bug, Prosumer, Smallpeople, Moomin, Oskar Offermann, Jus-Ed, Tornado Wallace, Move D and Fred P.
In conjunction with members of the Kana, White Rhino and Let’s Get Minimal collectives, Rikki is launching the Andromeda Festival - a boutique open-air electronica event set to take place on November 22nd-23rd 2014 at Ivory’s Rock in South-East Queensland’s Scenic Rim. With an edgy music policy and creativity first approach, it will be a breath of fresh air to audiences looking to break from run of the mill festival line-ups.

Watch me surprise my wife Belle on her birthday!
Belle’s Birthday was on the 23rd of January. I had to go to work that day but I arranged for a staycation for our family at The Astral Towers in Sydney’s The Star.
The birthday surprise starts when Belle got off the tram (Sydney lightrail) and was quite surprised to see me waiting to greet her a happy birthday in the city.
There was still about 3 hours left on my work so Belle, Baby Blaire and her cousin Alzen who lives with us here in Sydney went around to do some window shopping and quick lunch, waiting to meet me after I clock out from work.
After I left work, I had to quickly go collect the birthday cake that I’ve ordered for Belle and went to the hotel to check in and leave the cake there.
I told Belle we were staying in the city overnight but she didn’t know at which hotel, so it was another surprise.
So we checked in at the Astral Towers which is a 5-star hotel here in Sydney and I surprised Belle (again!) that since it’s her birthday, we jave unlimited access to the hotel’s executive lounge where we had some afternoon snack and breakfast the following day.
Then we went swimming and prepared for her birthday dinner at Pancakes on the Rocks which was a memorable place for us as it’s the very 1st restaurant we went to during our first days in Sydney.
I’ve invited 3 of our closes friends for dinner, also a surprise for Belle as she thought it was only us. These 3 are our very first friends here in Sydney and are now all godparents to our Baby Blaire.
Then we walked back to the hotel and had her surprise birthday cake waiting for her in the room. Belle made a wish, blew her birthday candles as we sang her a happy birthday song.
That’s it guys!
