Bratislava (/ˌbrætᵻˈslɑːvə/ or /ˌbrɑː-/;[1][2] Slovak pronunciation: [ˈbracislaʋa] ( listen); also known by other names) is the capital of Slovakia, and with a population of about 450,000, the country's largest city.[3] The greater metropolitan area is home to more than 650,000 people. Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia, occupying both banks of the River Danube and the left bank of the River Morava. Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the only national capital that borders two independent countries.[4]
Bratislava is the political, cultural and economic centre of Slovakia. It is the seat of the Slovak president, the parliament and the Slovak Executive. It is home to several universities, museums, theatres, galleries and other important cultural and educational institutions.[5] Many of Slovakia's large businesses and financial institutions also have headquarters there. Bratislava is the sixth richest region of the European Union and GDP per capita is about 3 times higher than in other Slovak regions.[6][7]
The history of the city has been strongly influenced by people of different nations and religions, namely by Austrians, Croats, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Serbs[8] and Slovaks (in alphabetical order).[9] The city was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, a part of the larger Habsburg Monarchy territories,[10] from 1536 to 1783 and has been home to many Slovak, Hungarian and German historical figures.

Bratislava OFFICIAL SPOT
Bratislava is the history, architecture, tradition, culture, art, drinks, food and nightlife.
Located on the River Danube, Bratislava is easily accessible. It’ a great place to hang out. The city is safe, friendly, hassle-free and there is always something worth doing; whether you’re here for an afternoon, a week or a year.
UNIQUE LOCATION
Bratislava has always been a flourishing and prosperous town, which has made the most of its strategic position on the Danube and at the intersections of important European trade routes. In the Mediaeval period and later in the 18th century, it was a significant economic centre and later, a cultural and political centre of Central Europe. It was thanks to its location that in the 16th Century, Bratislava i became the capital and coronation town of the Hungarian Kingdom and the place, where its crown jewels were kept. For one thing, it was remote from the invading Turks, yet close to imperial Vienna, from where the whole of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was governed for almost the following 500 years.
For a long time, Vienna and Bratislava were very closely connected economically, culturally and politically. In the 18th century, the Castle was rebuilt and served as a summer residence for Queen Maria Theresa who visited the town frequently. The main reason for her regular visits was the fact, that her favourite daughter, Maria Christine, lived here for almost 20 years.
The strategic location of the town had been considered a long-term advantage but suddenly in the middle of the 20th century it became a major disadvantage, when Bratislava had to pay heavily for its unique position. After the communists came to power in 1948, an Iron Curtain, visible from the city centre, was drawn. It brutally divided what had once been a single economic and cultural region.
Following the fall of communism in 1989, Bratislava could at last develop as a free town and re-establish its close relations with Vienna. Now, paradoxically, it was Vienna which held the excluded region back from its more rapid growth. Although much was resolved once Slovakia became a member of the European Union in 2004, the final impediment to the rapid development of the cross-border Euro-region was removed as late as 2007 when a motorway on the Austrian side came into operation and Slovakia became part of the Schengen group.

Ryeberg Home Movie: Most SNP, Bratislava, Slovakia
Most Slovenského národného povstania, better known as Most SNP (in English: the Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising), spans the Danube in Slovakia's capital, Bratislava. It was opened in 1972 in honor of the 1944 resistance movement against the Nazi forces. The saucer at the top has a bar and restaurant. Ryeberg likes it.

Going from Vienna to Bratislava was an experience I expected but long anticipated, from graffiti in the streets, to stronger language barriers, to the fantastic nightlife. After arriving at Bratislava hlavná stanica, I walked towards the city center to my hostel, about 1 block from the center. The one thing I loved about this city is that it is easy to navigate. And better yet, you can see much of the city highlights in just one day. After getting settled in my hostel, I walked up to the Slavin War Memorial that commemorates the many Soviet soldiers that died during World War II. From there I took a tram to the infamous Bratislavsky Hrad / Bratislava Castle for gorgeous views of the whole city, Most SNP, Petržalka, and the Danube River all during sunset. From there I crossed the Staromestská ulica into the old city center, where you get a taste of the towns history within the fortified walls. Walking down the many cobble stoned alleys, grabbing a Slovak meal, and climbing to the top of the Michaels Gate / Michalská brána for even more views of the city. A few hours later I took the 93 bus from Hodžovo nám across the Danube to Petržalka to take a ride up to the Most SNP UFO, an observation deck with 360 degree panoramic views of Bratislava, Petržalka, and much of the Austrian border. Below the roof sits a nice loungy restaurant where I had a delicious Slovak beer enjoying views of the Castle and city center. After more relaxation at the hostel, I set off to a long desired club experience at Subclub, a former bomb shelter turned nightclub below the Bratislava Castle deep in the ground of Bratislava. It was this very experience that made me work hard on trying to see Bratislava during the weekend. As a life long lover of EDM music, house and techno in this bomb shelter did a lot of justice during my stay. AMAZING EXPERIENCE.
Next day was an interesting one as I made a dedicated attempt to see a castle in the Village of Beckov, Slovakia. After missing one train, I got on the wrong train leaving me lost in the wrong town for about an hour. After getting on the right train with some help from a local, I found my way to the right city, only to find out that the bus service to the castle did not run on Saturdays. After being approached my a lady who at first was helping me understand this bus issue, she then tried to lead me to a hotel and when that failed, she insisted on having her son pick us up and take us there. With my options running low and all the obstacles I had faced, and the cost of a taxi ride there and back, I decided to head back to Bratislava. I made a venture to a castle that is much easier to access, Hrad Devin / Devin Castle, ruins that sit on a rock overlooking the Austrian border and the village. After I headed back after a long day, enjoyed yet another good meal and brew at the hostel restaurant before a final night walk through town and to my favorite bomb shelter club for my favorite music, Drum and Bass.
Next day I woke up early and set off for the Czech Republic. I not only loved Slovakia for its bomb shelter night club and beautiful landmarks, but despite the mishaps I faced, I still came across fantastic, friendly, and warm locals throughout my stay. As for budget travel, Slovakia was by far the cheapest and most budget friendly Europe destinations I've been to so far. I shall return Slovakia.

Bratislava - Hlavné námestie
Bratislava is one of the youngest capitals in Europe and few people know that during the time it was called Pressburg or Pozsony it was one of the most important cities in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was a mixing pot of various nations and nationalities who lived together in peace and harmony. There is a saying that a true 'Pressburgian' speaks four languages: Slovak, German, Hungarian and Mishmash. Even as recently as the 1980s you might hear how older Pressburgians in the street would say two words in German, two in Hungarian and two in Slovak all in the space of one sentence. That is what we mean by mishmash.
Bratislava's location on the banks of the River Danube and at the crossroads of ancient trading routes right at the heart of Europe predestined it to become a meeting point of various cultures. It was the home of the Celts, the Romans, and the Slavs ... The reign of Maria Theresa is regarded as a golden era in the city's history. She was crowned Queen of Hungary in St. Martin's cathedral in Pressburg, just like the 10 other kings and 8 royal partners over the course of 300 years when Pressburg was in fact the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary.
The rich mix of cultures and nations not only left its mark in the language spoken here, but also in the customs, cuisine and lifestyle. Just like the Viennese, the people of Bratislava also enjoy promenading through the streets of the city centre, taking time out for a coffee in any of the many cafes. This part of the city is referred to as the Korzo and combines elegance with charm. Visitors say that the city has a relaxed Mediterranean type atmosphere. Bratislava is a seaside city without the sea.
Nowadays Bratislava is experiencing a boom once more. Buildings are popping up, deals being made, people studying, and everything is on the move. Experts regard it as one of the most dynamically developing and most prospective regions in Europe. It welcomes tourists, business people, and investors, who are attracted to this blooming city and its lively atmosphere. There are many cities in Europe that can boast their own special unique charm, and Bratislava is definitely one of them.
