THE COBBLER (BEN ARTHUR) SCOTLAND | Threading the Needle
THE COBBLER (BEN ARTHUR) SCOTLAND | Threading the Needle
The Cobbler aka Ben Arthur is one of the best-known mountains in Scotland, its three summits form an instantly recognisable outline. The true summit, the central peak, requires a tricky scrambling manouvre to conquer - perhaps the most technical mainland summit - and most of the thousands who venture up here decide to give it a miss, but we thead the needle and tackle the climb to the top.
The Cobbler is a mountain of 884 metres in height and located near the head of Loch Long in Scotland. Although only a Corbett, it is one of the most impressive summits in the Southern Highlands.

Arrochar; is a village located near the head of Loch Long, on the Cowal peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scottish Highlands. The village is within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. Historically in Dunbartonshire, it is overlooked by a group of mountains called the Arrochar Alps, and in particular by the distinctive rocky summit of the Cobbler. It enjoys good communications as it is at the junction of the A83 and A814 roads and is served by Arrochar and Tarbet railway station. In addition the A82 road runs through Tarbet two miles to the east.
For over five centuries this area, the feudal barony of Arrochar, was held by the chiefs of Clan MacFarlane and before them by their ancestors the barons of Arrochar. The family is Celtic in the male line and native to their Highland homeland of tall peaks and deep lochs just above the waist of Scotland. The settlement was a key target for Viking raiders who took their boats 2 miles overland to Tarbet to attack the unprotected inland settlements at Loch Lomond before their defeat in 1263 at the battle of Largs.
The western end of Arrochar marks the traditional boundary of Argyllshire and Dunbartonshire, and this remained the case under local government reorganisation in 1975. However, in 1996 the boundaries of Argyll and Bute and West Dunbartonshire were substantially redrawn, bringing the whole area into Argyll and Bute.

Arrochar, Scotland
Little look about at the Rest and be Thankful before heading into Arrocher itself, stunning sunny day (pity it was too windy for safe flight most of the time) but the wee drive and the wee fly cleared the cobwebs, you can also see the Cobbler on the Arrochar Alps lol.. I have walked to the cobbler many times over the years.

Threading the needle in Scotland
During spring I was wandering around the UK and I decided to catch a train to Scotland to meet up with a good friend of mine.
The adventure that followed was the ultimate example of why I live this life.
The hiking track is called The Cobbler, in Loch Long, Scotland.
~to attain the true summit, you must crawl through a hole (known as threading the needle), which leads to a ledge around 1 m (3 ft) wide, with a sheer drop of well over 30 m (100 ft).

The Cobbler - An Adventure on Beinn Artair
9th Apr 2011 - A morning adventure up Ben Arthur - The Cobbler. We left very early to get there first, which we did, but due to having a brew in the car park we were not first to start the hike. But we caught up, overtook and as we took the more direct hands-on route we got to each summit first. We wanted to do some scrambling and climbing anyway, and though it is not a munro, it is a spectacular craggy hill with a view, and some exposed challenges which were fun too. We went to visit Dumbarton Rock (E11 !!!) afterwards and met some proper climbers there. Now that place isn't half a challenge... Think I'll leave that to the pro's!
