Irish Coffin Ship
From a Diary of an Irish Coffin Ship 1847. A memorial of this near Westport in Co Mayho reminds us of the dreadful events that took place.
Coffin Ship - National Famine Monument
We ve had some pretty grim periods in our countries history. The Great Famine was such a period between 1845 and 1849 with mass starvation, disease and emigration.
During the famine, about one million people died and a million more emigrated
Not everyone who boarded a ship made it
This morning I took a drive to the base of Croagh Patrick and at the base of the Holy Mountain is the National Famine Monument
Have a look .......poignant

Day 6 was BUSY! Started in the beautiful town of Westport and filmed just outside of town at some country fields and then at a great cemetery and ruins site. Then drove to the Coffin Ship and from there drove the Murrisk peninsula and saw Doo Lough (worth it just for that. Saw many sheep on the way to Kylemoore Abbey but due to construction we did not enter. Then drove through Connemara National forest and skipped Galway due to traffic. But was able to catch Kinvara right at sunset and get some great shots of the castle and harbour.

LYRICS
Well, I thought I heard the old man say
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
It's a long, hard pull til your next pay day
And it's time for us to leave her
Chorus:
Leave her, Johnny, leave her
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her
For the voyage is done and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her
Oh the skipper was bad, but the mate was worse……
He would cut you down with a spike or a curse…… Chorus
Oh, pull you lubbers or you'll get no pay…….
Oh, pull you lubbers and then be lay…… Chorus
Ah well, now it’s time for to say goodbye.….;
Those pilings they are drawing nigh.….. Chorus x2
