— About Exploring Colombia —
Colombia, a country which many only know because of it’s violent past, has been on my list since I went to South America for my first long-term trip in 2012. 6 Years later and with 5 weeks to spend it was finally time to properly explore my country number 9 on the continent.
For the first part of the trip I’ll be traveling with my mate David to the historical city of Cartagena, some picturesque Carribean islands and to the city of Medellin where we get to learn about the violent past and the transformation of the country. After a few days in the capital Bogota I’ll be joined by my good friend Stefan to learn salsa and take on some outdoor adventures in Cali before heading up to Santa Marta where we checkout the most beautiful beaches, float down rivers and hike through the mountains.

Bogota Colombia: City Tour. Two friends who live in bogota colombia offer to take me on a tour of the city of bogota colombia on a beautiful sunday. This is the second part of the tour, and the first half can be seen in my previous video. Bogota Colombia is a massive city, the capital of colombia and the largest population in colombia. The size of bogota colombia can certainly be felt when one is walking around the city. Also discussed is the Transmilenio, the main form of public transportation in Bogota Colombia. The transmilenio is a system of buses that connects all of the major areas of bogota colombia. I discuss how even after weeks in bogota, I am still intimidated by the large system. Welcome to Colombia
La Candelaria is the neighborhood located at Bogota’s Downtown and it is a small reminder of how Bogotá in the past was, thanks to its colonial architecture. Here is where the city was founded on August 6, 1538 and there’s so many places you can visit. There’s a great offer of restaurants, museums, cultural centers, colonial churches and universities.
The main sites of interest are the Marketplace “La Concordia” where you can find a great variety of Colombian fruits and vegetables, the Chorro de Quevedo, a spot for cultural activities and have fun with friends. Then, there’s the Church “Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria”, the one that gives the name to all the neighborhood. Other place is the Plaza de Bolivar, it is the main square where you can find the City Hall, the Congress, the Palace of Justice, and the Cathedral of Bogotá. Other places are the Plaza Santander, Iglesia de San Francisco, the Restaurant “La Puerta Falsa” and the Coffee House “Café Pasaje”.

Colombia Travel: Exploring Bogota, Cartagena, & Cali
If you’re thinking about traveling to Colombia, these are the cities you absolutely have to visit. Learn about the culture, food, and nightlife that await you in Colombia's most vibrant cities.
Nestled on a plateau high in the Andes, Bogota isn’t what most people picture when they think of Colombia. Cool and often foggy, Bogota averages a temperature of just 58° Fahrenheit throughout the year. Surrounded by lush Andean hills, Bogota’s colorful mix of colonial and modernist architecture makes it one of the most stunning cities in the world. Just as importantly, Bogota is much safer than most people think.
Bogota is composed of dozens of unique neighborhoods, all with their own culture and feel. Sure, you’d be remiss if you didn’t check out some of Bogota’s awesome museums (the Gold Museum is particularly incredible) or hang out in one of its countless parks—but the real Bogota is the one that only locals can show you: a youthful city of street art, live music, and dance halls far off the beaten path. For an authentic taste of Bogota’s vibrant culture, duck into a bar for a rowdy game of tejo—a sport that essentially boils down to tossing a metal puck at targets filled with gunpowder. No matter the time of night, it’ll be packed with locals from all walks of life enjoying good food, good company, and the occasional explosion.
Located on Colombia’s northern coast, Cartagena is the quintessential Caribbean paradise. Cartagena's idyllic beaches border the walls of its exquisitely-preserved old town, where miles of cobblestone streets, stunning Spanish colonial architecture, and flower-covered balconies abound. World famous resorts, nightclubs, and coral reefs complete Cartagena’s picture of Caribbean perfection.
Cartagena is known for its safety, warmth, and joie de vivre—and the locals certainly know how to party! Cartagena’s calendar is chock-full of festivals, and since the city was once a refuge for freed slaves, its culture has a rich Afro-Caribbean feel to it. Dance parties to champeta—a style of music that mixes that Spanish and African elements—are incredibly common. Known as picos, these open-air fiestas are a gorgeous representation of Cartagena’s unique multi-ethnic culture.
Although its full name is “Santiago de Cali”, this up-and-coming city is known to locals simply as “Cali”. Spread over the tropical savanna plains of the Cauca Valley, Cali boasts warm afternoons and cool, breezy evenings. Due in part to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Cali is known as a center of industry; more importantly, however, it’s also known as the world capital of salsa dancing!
In a more transitional state than its neighboring cities, Cali is still recovering from the issues of the 1980s and ‘90s. To that end, safety in Cali is more of a concern than in Bogota, which are somewhat more rejuvenated (click here for advice on how to stay safe in Colombia). That being said, Cali’s charms are undeniable. As the world capital of salsa dancing, Cali boasts countless salsa bars, mostly in its beloved Juanchito neighborhood. Other cultural attractions include the Gato del Rio, a three-ton bronze cat sculpture on the bank of the Cali River, and Cristo Rey, an 85-foot statue of Jesus Christ overlooking the city.

Colombia Travel - Bogotá Vlog !
As I make my way through Colombia each city carries with it its own magic. Bogotá showed me the magic of friendship and renewal. A city that has been marked by a violent past but has actively taken part in making peace a priority, has along the way created beautiful art which is seen city wide.

Medellin vs. Bogota | Which Is The Better Expat Destination in Colombia?
Which is the best country for you?
???? Free Country Test ????
Medellin vs. Bogota
Another day another city comparison, today we will compare living in Medellin vs. living in Bogota.
Both cities have their own benefits when living there, but what are the biggest differences between Medellin and Bogota?
As always Sam shares his own opinion, the things that he claims to be a pro or a con for a city might be different for you. But since he can not talk for everyone, he sticks to his own opinion.
Medellin and Bogota are both great cities to live in as an Expat. The city comparison should help to make your decision easier, in case you're thinking of relocating to one of those cities.
Bogota is the capital city of Colombia and ha around double of the population Medellin has.
It is a pretty international city and has a lot of corporate companies located there. Due to that you see more foreigners and here more different languages from all over the world. But is such a huge city for you?
Medellin is famous for its eternal spring weather (for us even eternal summer)
Medellin is a really developed city and has a lot of entrepreneurship in its air. It's a fast-growing city and has a lot of great spots to live in. But because the city isn't as big as Bogota there are not so many options to live in compared to Bogota. And a lot of great activities are further away. Is the city of Medellin right for you?
Watch the video and find out if one of those cities fit you better.
Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

COLOMBIA: Bogota/Cartagena/Santa Marta
Spending my 2018 Christmas holiday in Colombia. It's my first time visiting South America and Colombia was a great introduction. I started in the Capital of Bogota where I learned about Colombia's rich history and culture doing the 3 hour graffiti bike tour, viewed the city from on top of Monserrate mountain, celebrated the national holiday Dia de las velitas which translates to ( Day of little candles) and went to marque de la sal (Salt Cathedral). I then headed down to the northern coast of Cartagena to see the walled city called old town, the fortress of Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, watched the sunset at Cafe del Mar and bathed in the live mud volcano of El Totumo. My final stop was Santa Marta where I hung out at the popular night life spot parque de los novios, tubed down the Palomino river and spent a day hiking and enjoying the beautiful beaches of Tayrona National Park.

Colombia is a touristic very young country but offers great cultural plans and great history. Since the early 2000’s the country became safe for receiving international tourists and since then is growing a lot. Still, Colombia is far behind other destinations. With 3.5m received international visitors, it is still small when considering that Spain for example received over 80m. You see, for your journey or your holidays it is the perfect destination.
Colombia as a travel destination has so much to offer, other countries cannot compete. Here we have 2 coastlines, one for the Pacific and one for the Atlantic. There are 3 Andean Mountain Chains running through the country and the altitude reaches from 0 up to over 5,800 meters (19,000 feet). Additionally in Colombia we have Rain Forest, Deserts, Paramo, Cloud Forest, Sub-Tropical Forest, Wetlands and more. (sula.com.co)
Colombia therefore is divided in 6 natural regions constituted by differences in weather, topography, vegetation and weather. Those are: Caribbean, Andean, Orinoco, Amazon, Pacific and Islands.
You also can find a range of different species in Colombia like Anacondas, Monkeys, Birds, Capybaras and many more. Colombia is the second most biodivers country in the world and number one in Birds and Orchids, second in Butterflies, Plants and Amphibians and counts over 9,000 endemic species in total. Therefore Birdwatching in Colombia is a perfect plan.
