Today, I have met a man, a passionate citizen who sold everything he owns to build his dream. He had a vision, he had a dream, that if producing his own beer, in his own shop, the way he was educated to. Being a scout, being a surfer, being a son of the sea, a local of Batroun, Jamil combined a lifetime for building his place of dreams, a structure he calls home.

Many have talked about Colonel of which CNN, is it because it's new or because it's special indeed? I have tasted it Colonel Beer last month which left me in awe, a beer that irradiates passion, know how, love and dedication. Today, going up all the way from Beirut, I came to meet the man behind this empire of flavors.

BATROUN, LEBANON - Batroun is a coastal city in Lebanon with ancient history and a vibrant culture - it’s known throughout Lebanon for its nightlife and energy. Today was a mixed day, we started by driving into the mountains to visit an amazing winery. From there, we headed back into the city to eat some local seafood sandwiches, and finally finished with Lebanese seafood at Colonel Brewery and Seafood Restaurant.

Sept Winery ( - An amazing local small batch wine produced in Batroun, Lebanon. The wine was fantastic as was the ambiance and food.

Georges Maalouf Kitchen ( - Next we drove back to Batroun city and stopped for some Lebanese seafood sandwiches. The octopus and sardines were delicious.

Colonel Brewery and Seafood Restaurant ( - An institution in Batroun, Colonel Brewery produces craft beer and also a variety of distilled spirits. They also have a seafood restaurant on the sea, and we actually had a table in the Mediterranean Sea (literally)! One of the unique fish we ate was lionfish, which is not native to the Meditteranean, but is an invasive species.

Accommodation in Batroun: Also, during our time in Batroun, we stayed at Villa Paradiso Batroun ( highly recommended. Fantastic boutique accommodation, staff, and breakfast.

BookYard meets Colonel Beer - a weekend in Batroun

Hello everyone!

I hope you are having a wonderful end of spring and prepping for the gorgeous summers we have in Lebanon.
This weekend I took part in the event BookYard meets Colonel Beer in Batroun where I had the immense fun to stay and sleep over, enjoy the beach, swim, and sell some of my old and used books.

In 2013 I decided to quit my job and come back to Batroun, to my city, to my small village here, and to make a small brewery, which is a microbrewery that produces quality beer, different types of beer. And have a beer garden at the same time to let people come and enjoy the beer.

I stole my parents' car. I went to Tripoli. I bought empty bottles. I came back home and I made 1,000 bottles of liqueur, like banana liqueur, Irish cream liqueur, mint liqueur. And I made 5,000 (US) dollars at that time. And I wanted to make 4,000 dollars to buy the windsurf gear.

One day we're going to all be so solid that we'll do an amazing beer festival and I'm extremely excited for that day. But right now there's a lot of barriers between me and Lebanon. I mean, Syria's not an easy place to pass through to get beer out there.

A surfer on Lebanon's northern shores is spreading craft beer culture with the Middle East's first brewpub.
The Colonel Brewery in Batroun prides itself on introducing new flavours to beer drinkers.
STORYLINE:
Craft brews are finally on tap in the Middle East.
Now all that's needed is to learn how to pull the perfect pint.
The Colonel brewery in Batroun in north Lebanon claims to be the first brewpub in the region.
They're introducing new flavours to beer drinkers in a market long dominated with national and international beers serving one single variety.
The microbrewery's founder, Jamil Haddad, gave up a career as a marketing manager for Adidas to pursue his two loves.
In 2013 I decided to quit my job and come back to Batroun, to my city, to my small village here, and to make a small brewery, which is a microbrewery that produces quality beer, different types of beer, Haddad says. And have a beer garden at the same time to let people come and enjoy the beer.
Beer isn't Haddad's only passion.
He's also an avid surfer.
The microbrew is only minutes from the beach, and when the waves are good you'll be sure to find him suited up on a surfboard.
The brewpub fills up on most days of the week, with people coming from across the country to try more than a dozen kinds of beer.
But making the beer has proved quite a challenge.
Haddad sources all of the equipment and ingredients from abroad because they don't exist in Lebanon.
He's encouraged to continue not only to make his business successful, but also to pay for his surfing equipment, which was his original impetus for selling alcohol when he was only 16 years old.
Other microbreweries are also popping up in the region.
The Carakale brewery in Jordan started when its founder Yazan Karadsheh halted a career in engineering for an oil company to return home.
The two owners know of each other but have yet to meet, and neither sell their beers in each other's countries.

The C.C.D Organized A Two-Day Extra-Curricular Internship At Colonel Craft Beer

Two days of pure discovery, lived by UA students on the shores of Batroun at Colonel Craft Beer Microbrewery in the framework of the extra-curricular internship, was organized by the Center for Career Development (C.C.D).
This internship was provided by the Pioneer and Innovative Jamil Haddad over 2 days where students discovered the amazing world of Craft Beer: ingredients, brewing and boiling process, bottling, labelling and beer tasting.
As a token of thanks and appreciation for the overwhelming generosity and hospitality, a UA plaque was presented to Mr. Haddad by Mr. Fouad Abdallah, C.C.D director.
