Garden of the Gods is a public park located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, US. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971. The Garden of the Gods red rock formations were created during a geological upheaval along a natural fault line millions of years ago. Archaeological evidence shows that prehistoric people visited Garden of the Gods about 1330 BC. At about 250 BC Native American people camped in the park. They are believed to have been attracted to wildlife and plant life in the area and used overhangs created by the rocks for shelter. There are many native peoples who have reported a connection to Garden of the Gods, including Ute, Comanche, Apache, Kiowa, Shoshone, Cheyenne, Pawnee and Lakota people.
The Utes oral traditions tell of their creation at the Garden of the Gods. Petroglyphs have been found in the park that are typical of early Utes. They found red rocks to have a spiritual connection and camped near Manitou Springs and the creek near Rock Ledge Ranch bordering Garden of the Gods. Other tribes traveled through Garden of the Gods. The Old Ute Trail went past Garden of the Gods to Ute Pass and led later explorers through Manitou Springs. Starting in the 16th century, Spanish explorers and later European American explorers and trappers traveled through the area, including Lt. John C. Freemont and Lt. George Frederick Ruxton, who recorded their visits in their journals.
The area was first called Red Rock Corral. Then, in August 1859, two surveyors who helped to set up Colorado City explored the site. One of the surveyors, M. S. Beach, suggested that it would be a capital place for a beer garden. His companion, the young Rufus Cable, awestruck by the impressive rock formations, exclaimed, Beer Garden! Why it is a fit place for the gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods.

Nude climbing sculpture in downtown Silt, Colorado
Silt, Colorado is located about 280 kilometres (175 miles) west of Denver, Colorado along Interstate 70 on the west side of the Continental divide. There is no other town in the United States named Silt! This town got its name from a warning along railroad tracks that there was silt ahead! Later a town grew up in that same spot and needed a name...
Anyway, I drive by Silt on an average of about a dozen times each year, only occasionally stopping for a break or refreshment.
During the summer of 2009 Silt made national news for the unique climbing sculpture in the middle of the town roundabout. That sculpture prominently displays the naked bottom of a climber scaling a cliff - as you can plainly see in this video. After the national commotion died-down I stopped in town to see for myself and record this video.
From my point of view (so to speak!) the sculpture doesn't seem like a big deal but I hear people still hang trousers on the climber now and again! Oh, yes, my car did start out in the wrong gear in this video - it's hard to shift, drive, and video record all at the same time!
Here's my Strange page that has a still photograph of this same sculpture:

Seven Falls Colorado Springs. Colorado, United States
Seven Falls Colorado Springs, Colorado 2005
Seven Falls is a series of seven cascading waterfalls of South Cheyenne Creek in South Cheyenne Cañon, Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is a privately owned tourist attraction since in was opened in the early 1880s. Trails from the top of the falls lead to Midnight Falls, near the headwaters of South Cheyenne Creek, and Inspiration Point. The area sustained a significant flood in September 2013, which has closed Seven Falls until restoration is complete late Summer 2015 by The Broadmoor. The resort bought Seven Falls after it had been owned and operated by families since the 1880s.

Rock Climbing 11 Mile Canyon Colorado
When we spend time in Colorado Springs one of our favorite climbing areas is 11 Mile Canyon. It is about an hour west of the Springs up in the mountains.
The setting could not be any prettier. The river flows down the canyon below many granite domes. The climbing is on very good rock and there is a little something for everyone. If you are learning to climb rock this can be a wonderful training ground, especially for the up and coming Trad climbers. If Sport is more your style this canyon also will please you.
