un breve videoclip sul museo annesso all'ex scuola della lavorazione del corallo di Torre del Greco. Esposti manufatti realizzati dagli studenti che dal 1878 hanno affollato i laboratori della scuola e pezzi pregiati provenenti da donazioni o da acquisizioni su altri mercati.
L’Istituto Statale d’Arte, ora Liceo Artistico di Torre del Greco è uno dei più antichi d’Italia: la “Scuola per la lavorazione del Corallo” fu infatti istituita con Regio Decreto del 23 giugno 1878. Nel 1968 divenne Istituto Statale d’Arte e nel 2009 è stato aggregato all’Istituto d’Istruzione Superiore “Francesco Degni” di Torre del Greco.
La scuola è ospitata sin dalle sue origini nel barocco convento annesso alla chiesa del Carmine. Ricostruito nella seconda metà del Seicento dopo che l’eruzione del 1631 aveva distrutto l’originario edificio cinquecentesco, è una delle poche strutture sopravvissute alle devastanti eruzioni che nel 1737 e nel 1794 seppellirono buona parte della città.
Il complesso, recentemente restaurato, si articola intorno all’antico chiostro e ospita al primo piano, oltre ad ambienti riccamente decorati in stucco, il Museo del Corallo, inaugurato il 3 aprile 1933 col contributo del Banco di Napoli, dello Stato e delle Pubbliche Amministrazioni.
The Art Institute of Torre del Greco is one of the oldest in Italy: The School for handcrafting Coral was instituted by Royal Decree on the 23rd of June, 1878. In 1968 it became a public art institute and in 2009 was aggregated at the Institute of Higher Education Francesco Degni of Torre del Greco.
The school is still located in the Baroque convent which adjoins the Carmine Church. It was rebuilt in the late seventeenth century after the eruption of 1631 destroyed the original sixteenth-century building. It is one of the few structures that survived the devastating eruptions in 1737 and 1794, which buried much of the town.
The complex, recently renovated is structured around the ancient monastery and is home to the first floor, where there are rooms richly decorated in stucco and the Coral Museum, which opened April 3rd, 1933 with the contribution of the Bank of Naples, the State and Public Administration.

Dopo un periodo di chiusura che ha consentito il rinnovo degli allestimenti e la messa a norma della struttura, il Museo del Corallo, simbolo della città, questa mattina ha riaperto le sue porte con tutta la sua unicità rappresentativa.
Precious coral
Red corals grow on rocky seabottom with low sedimentation, typically in dark environments—either in the depths or in dark caverns or crevices. The original species, C. rubrum (formerly Gorgonia nobilis), is found mainly in the Mediterranean Sea. It grows at depths from 10 to 300 meters below sea level, although the shallower of these habitats have been largely depleted by harvesting.[1] In the underwater caves of Alghero, Sardinia (the Coral Riviera) it grows at depth from 4 to 35 meters. The same species is also found at Atlantic sites near the Strait of Gibraltar, at the Cape Verde Islands and off the coast of Southern Portugal.[ Other Corallium species are native to the western Pacific, notably around Japan (Corallium japonicum) and Taiwan;[2] these occur at depths of 350 to 1500 meters below sea level in areas with strong currents The hard skeleton of red coral branches is naturally matte, but can be polished to a glassy shine.[] It exhibits a range of warm reddish pink colors from pale pink to deep red; the word coral is also used to name such colors. Owing to its intense and permanent coloration and glossiness, precious coral skeletons have been harvested since antiquity for decorative use. Coral jewellery has been found in ancient Egyptian and prehistoric European burials,[3] and continues to be made to the present day. It was especially popular during the Victorian age.
Precious coral has relative density of 3.86 and hardness 3.5 on the Mohs scale.[] Due to its softness and opacity, coral is usually cut en cabochon, or used to make beads.
