Germany military Cemetery
Cannock Chase
Staffordshire
Filmed and Edited
by
Roy Kevin Holloway
On 16 October 1959, the governments of the United Kingdom and the Federal Republic of Germany made an agreement about the future care of the remains of German military personnel and German civilian internees of both World Wars who at the time were interred in various cemeteries not already maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It was agreed that the remains would be transferred to a single central cemetery established on Cannock Chase for this purpose.[1]
Carved plinth at cemetery entrance, 2009
The German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge or VDK) made the necessary arrangements and the inauguration and dedication of this cemetery - which is maintained under the inter-government agreement by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission - took place in June 1967. It contains nearly 5,000 German and Austrian graves.[1][2] A number of World War II Ukrainian volunteers captured when in German service are also buried here.[3]

Layout of the Cemetery[edit]
The entrance building contains toilets for visitors and a visiting room where the Cemetery Register is available on request. A plan of the plots within the cemetery is also on display. From here a small courtyard with a covered passage forms the connection to the Hall of Honour, which has at its centre, resting on a large block of stone, a bronze sculpture of a fallen warrior, by the eminent German sculptor, Professor Hans Wimmer.[1][2] Open passageways give a clear view of two terraces. On the west-facing terrace there is a granite monument to the crews of the four airships (SL 11, L32, L31, L48) shot down in World War I and who lie buried here in a tomb in separate sarcophagi.[2]

The other terrace forms a link between the Hall of Honour and the cemetery. The graves of the dead of the First and Second World War are generally separated and lie on either side of the gentle slopes of the cemetery with a valley between them. The burials are marked by headstones from Belgian Petit Granit and are usually inscribed for two individuals on the front and on the back.[2]
Notable graves[edit]
Notable people include:
Ernst Busch, World War II German Field-Marshal and Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) recipient.
Leo Gburek, German geophysicist, Luftwaffe Weather Observer and a member of the Third German Antarctic Expedition
Hans Hahn, World War II German Luftwaffe Leutnant and flying ace.
Maximilian von Herff, World War II German SS-General.
Karl Ritscherle, World War I German flying ace and World War II Luftwaffe Major, killed in Battle of Britain.
Alois Stoeckl, World War II German Luftwaffe Oberst, killed in Battle of Britain.
German war graves elsewhere in UK[edit]
According to the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge,[2] just over 1000 German World War II casualties are still buried elsewhere in the UK, including 111 at Saint Peter Port (Fort George), Guernsey,[4] and others at Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey.[5] The remainder are interred in Commonwealth War Graves Commission-administered plots all over the UK, often near where their bodies were found or where they died. For example, three Luftwaffe bomber crew, whose Dornier ditched in the sea off Kingsdown, Kent in 1940, were buried in the military section of Hamilton Road Cemetery, Deal, Kent, less than 2 miles from the crash.
In the same locality as this cemetery, the Commonwealth Cannock Chase War Cemetery contains 286 German war graves, primarily of those who died in a local prisoner-of-war camp and hospital in World War I but also including graves of 58 Germans who had been reinterred here in 1963.[6]
A proposal was made to rebury in this cemetery former Imperial German Navy officer Carl Hans Lody (shot for espionage at the Tower of London in 1914) in the 1960s. The VDK asked if it would be possible to disinter Lody's body from East London Cemetery in Plaistow and move it to Cannock Chase. By that time, the plot had been reused for further common graves, buried above Lody's body. The VDK was told that it would not be possible to disinter the other bodies without the permission of the relatives, which would have been an almost impossible task where common graves were concerned. The proposal was abandoned and Lody's body remains

Shot at Dawn,
'Shot at Dawn' Cells and Memorial, Poperinge
A stark reminder of unwanted events of World War One
In many ways, the Cells and Execution Pole where men were executed during WW1 in Poperinge is a sombre and emotional place to visit, but to understand and respect more the history of those tormented times, it has to be visited.
The Cells are situated in the main Town Hall and can be reached by going through a small side gate. There are two cells, both kept bare and in context with what went on there. Each are about 8 feet square and one has a view to the Courtyard where the executions took place.
On the walls you will see some graffiti, but not all go back to those times; but you can soon identify those drawn by the Prisoners by their age and composition.
Whilst you are there, a recording plays every half an hour or so in which information about procedures are given and there's also a dramatic re-inactment of the 'Ceremony'.
The Execution Pole is in the Courtyard and the thing which immediately strikes is that they have built an extension to the Town Hall around it, thus ensuring this reminder will be there forever
Altogether, there were over 300 British Servicemen shot during WW1. It is not known exactly how many were guilty of their crimes, some saying they were simply shot as an example. Without doubt though, some shot for cowardice were suffering from Shell Shock and it wasn't until nearly 100 years later that the British Government completed the pardoning of those concerned - a little late.
There was of course some crime amongst the ranks, but if those crimes warranted death by firing squad, who will ever really know.
It's also interesting to note that these were carried out in the Town Hall, in the middle of the Town where thousands of men would spend some days leave, so they would have been very aware of the events taking place.
Poperinge is a town of many stories, some good, some bad and some extremely ugly, but that's how it was then and by visiting the actual site and getting a feel of the place, will bring you closer to understanding the cruelness of War.

Spooky Spofforth Castle at Midnight (30 minute challenge)
Sam and Katy at midnight at the very spooky Spofforth Castle/Manor...it felt like eyes were constantly watching us as we walked around these ruins in the darkness...we heard answers to some questions with our own ears so wear ear-buds or headphones and see if you can hear them too...we also heard knocks and bangs around us in response to questions...(Sam) 'I've never seen Katy as jumpy and scared as she was here, it's usually me who's the jumpy, freaked out one'
Let us know what you see or hear in the comments....and enjoy...I'll be uploading the short live we filmed afterwards too..check that out :) spoooooky...
The History...
From the Norman Conquest until the 17th century, Spofforth was in the possession of the Percy family, one of the most important and influential families in northern England.
The west range at Spofforth Castle was built in the early 14th century, fortifying the original manor house
It was the principal Percy seat until the late 14th century. William de Percy, a favourite of William the Conqueror, built a manor house here in the 11th century, although nothing remains of this earlier building. Reputedly it was here that rebel barons drew up Magna Carta in 1215.
In 1224 Henry III granted a licence to a later William de Percy to hold a Friday market in the town and in 1308 Henry de Percy received a licence to fortify the manor house.
During the Wars of the Roses the Percys supported the House of Lancaster. Following the battle of Towton in 1461 the victorious Yorkist side, led by the Earl of Warwick, marched on Spofforth, burning the castle and plundering the local countryside. The castle lay in ruins for nearly 100 years until 1559, when it was restored by Henry, Lord Percy. By this time, however, the seat of the Percys had shifted to Alnwick in Northumberland.
The last recorded occupant was the castle steward Sampson Ingleby, who died in 1604. The castle was finally reduced to ruin during the Civil War. In 1924 Charles Henry, Baron Leconfield, transferred ownership of the site to the state by deed of gift.
DESCRIPTION
Spofforth Castle is situated on a small rocky outcrop overlooking the village. The medieval manor house was arranged around a courtyard but only the west range, which contained the principal apartments, still stands. Only earthworks and some low walls remain of the north, south and east ranges.
A flight of steps leads down from the site of the courtyard to the ground floor of the west range. At the south end is the earliest part of the building, dating from the 13th century. The west range was built against the rocky outcrop. A passage cut directly through the rock led up to the great hall but was later blocked, probably in the 15th century.
The remains of a row of columns and stone corbels on the west wall date from the 14th century, when a stone vault was added. At first-floor level the east and west walls were totally rebuilt during the 15th century with impressive windows in each wall.
At the far end of the undercroft the solar, or private chamber, is reached through a door in the north-west corner. The solar block, added in the 14th century, is very similar in design to that at Markenfield Hall, near Ripon, with a spiral stair turret leading from the main chamber up to the first floor. The door in the north-east corner leads into the garderobe, or latrine tower.
On the first floor a passage, now ruined, leading from a private chamber and chapel, gave access to the great hall. The great hall could also have been entered through a doorway at the south end of the east wall, where there would probably also have been a passage leading to the buttery and kitchen. The chapel has a finely moulded window in the west wall but was probably later converted to accommodation, a garderobe being added in the east wall.
