Rudi & Marna Riek have succeeded in bringing a dream to fruition ... creating and establishing a platform for their artistic family's works.
THE ARTISTS:

Gretchen Arnot - Dieter & Emmy Riek's daughter, set up the BLUE SQUARE Studio where her work with clay and glass are her passion. Her works are both highly functional and artistic at the same time.
Linda Reyburn -has spent time cruising the canals of England and experiencing the timelessness of Cyprus before settling in the Overberg. Such rich experiences are evident in her sought after artworks.
Daniel Griffin -after a diverse and rewarding childhood and apprenticeship, Daniel is an accomplished and renowned ceramicist resident in the artist's hamlet of Wolvengat. His FIRE POT business procuces flameproof ceramics, fireplaces, braziers, braais & tagines.
Andre Minnie -with an underlying passion for nature, Andre draws on his many years of experiences to produce commssions in ceramic sculpture, vases and paintings in oils and acrylics.
Hendrikus Rabie - another resident of Wolvengat, Hendrikus works with commonly available materials such as cement to produce sculptural works.
Wynnsome Wise Kierman - is interested in new ways of seeing and making art. Having studied Fine Arts for a while at WITS, taught at the primary and high school levels, as well as coached teahcers how to teach art, his works reflect his vast experience and heritage received from his grandfather and father.
Peter Retief -working predominantly on commissions, Peter produces fine works that cover a whole range of subjects from portraits and landscapes, to still life and animals. Working in oils on canvas he also gives one-on-one lessons at all levels.
Chimene Tison - Chimene is from Stellenbosch but paints Landscape scenes that include the Overberg. Pieter Vermaak, well known South African artist says this about Chimene's work:
Chimène's art takes one on a special romantic journey where the colours, light and smells are surreal. Each of her pieces, depicts light, which just seems to slip in and ignite the wonderful colours she blends in with instinctive brilliance in each of her artistic creations.
Jonathon Dry - grew up in Hermanus after his parents relocated to the seaside holiday town. He matriculated in 2007 with a distinction in art. After spending time in Namibia and London he returned to his home town where he began his career in art. This talented young artist is entirely self-taught and has chosen not to study art, but instead follow his passion for pencil drawing. This medium of graphite on paper or board, allows him to give great attention to detail and create an emotive atmosphere. He has had 2 joint exhibitions in Hermanus and his work has already received international acclaim.

Steve Bunker Dec. 7, 2003 Oral History Interview
Steve Bunker's background and a major love is the sea. Also a history buff, he originally came to Baltimore to help build a Baltimore Clipper in Baltimore Harbor, stayed on for a few years as Baltimore's maritime historian and eventually opened his shop in Fell's Point, The China Sea, a marine-salvage and antique shop complete with live parrots. A community leader for many years, Steve is remembered for representing the working waterfront community and helping to moderate development. He and Sharon Bondroff moved their shop to Maine in 1999 after they decided they could no longer afford the rents in Fell's Point.

SUMMARY
=======
The maritime history of the United States is a broad theme within the history of the United States. As an academic subject, it crosses the boundaries of standard disciplines, focusing on understanding the United States' relationship with the oceans, seas, and major waterways of the globe. The focus is on merchant shipping, and the financing and manning of the ships. A merchant marine owned at home is not essential to an extensive foreign commerce. In fact, it may be cheaper to hire other nations to handle the carrying trade than to participate in it directly. On the other hand, there are certain advantages, particularly during time of war, which may warrant an aggressive government encouragement to the maintenance of a merchant marine.
Water, Wind, and Waves: Marine Paintings from the Dutch Golden Age
Alexandra Libby, assistant curator, northern baroque paintings, National Gallery of Art. The Dutch rose to greatness from the riches of the sea. From their massive cargo- and warships to their small vessels and fishing boats, they commanded the high seas and inland and coastal waterways, becoming leaders in maritime travel, transport, and commerce. Yet, the water was also a source of pleasure and enjoyment. In the warm summer months dune-covered beaches offered scenic vistas, while in the winter frozen canals offered a place for people of all ages to skate, play, and enjoy the outdoors. In this lecture held at the National Gallery of Art on July 1, 2018, Alexandra Libby discusses the essential, multifaceted relationship the Dutch maintained with the water, as seen in the exhibition Water, Wind, and Waves: Marine Paintings from the Dutch Golden.
Ryan Holiday: How to Create Work That Lasts | Chase Jarvis LIVE
Ryan Holiday is an author and media strategist. His career in marketing started at age 19, where he dropped out of college to work with Robert Green. He soon found his way as the director of marketing for American Apparel, then went on to start his own creative agency, Brass Check, who advises the likes of Google, Tim Ferriss, and Tony Robbins. He’s quite the writer, making the New York Times bestseller list with multiple of the 6 books he’s released in the last 5 years.
Ryan is a master marketer and what you’ll find at the core of his marketing principles are his personal principles. He applies a Stoic philosophy to everything he does and this episode is overflowing with philosophies, self directed questions, and stories that has helped him make work that stands the test of time, and will help you do the same.
In today's episode we discuss:
* Good marketing isn’t taking pictures or writing copy that sell shoes anymore. It’s just as much about making work that starts a discussion.
* You’re going to get a little crash course on Stoic philosophy and how to use your own mindset to propel your creative endeavors in three simple but challenging steps. Control your perception, take action, and look forward to the transformation that hardship brings.
* The two questions you should be asking yourself before starting any creative project are “who is this for?” and “what does this do for them?” If you think long term about the impact that you want to make, it will help you persevere when the going gets tough.
Enjoy!

SUMMARY
=======
Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence by ship or boat-borne attackers upon another ship or a coastal area, typically with the goal of stealing cargo and other valuable items or properties. Those who engage in acts of piracy are called pirates. The earliest documented instances of piracy were in the 14th century BC, when the Sea Peoples, a group of ocean raiders, attacked the ships of the Aegean and Mediterranean civilizations. Narrow channels which funnel shipping into predictable routes have long created opportunities for piracy, as well as for privateering and commerce raiding. Historic examples include the waters of Gibraltar, the Strait of Malacca, Madagascar, the Gulf of Aden, and the English Channel, whose geographic structures facilitated pirate attacks. A land-based parallel is the ambushing of travelers by bandits and brigands in highways and mountain passes. Privateering uses similar methods to piracy, but the captain acts under orders of the state authorizing the capture of merchant ships belonging to an enemy nation, making it a legitimate form of war-like activity by non-state actors.While the term can include acts committed in the air, on land (especially across national borders or in connection with taking over and robbing a car or train), or in other major bodies of water or on a shore, this article focuses on maritime piracy. It does not normally include crimes committed against people traveling on the same vessel as the perpetrator (e.g. one passenger stealing from others on the same vessel). Piracy or pirating is the name of a specific crime under customary international law and also the name of a number of crimes under the municipal law of a number of states. In the early 21st century, seaborne piracy against transport vessels remains a significant issue (with estimated worldwide losses of US$16 billion per year in 2004), particularly in the waters between the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, off the Somali coast, and also in the Strait of Malacca and Singapore.
Today, pirates armed with automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades use small motorboats to attack and board ships, a tactic that takes advantage of the small number of crew members on modern cargo vessels and transport ships. They also use larger vessels, known as mother ships, to supply the smaller motorboats. The international community is facing many challenges in bringing modern pirates to justice, as these attacks often occur in international waters. Some nations have used their naval forces to protect private ships from pirate attacks and to pursue pirates, and some private vessels use armed security guards, high-pressure hoses or sound cannons to repel boarders, and use radar to avoid potential threats.

The Cruise of the Snark Audiobook by Jack London | Full Audiobook with subtitles
The Cruise of the Snark (1913) is a memoir of Jack and Charmian London's 1907-1909 voyage across the Pacific. His descriptions of surf-riding, which he dubbed a royal sport, helped introduce it to and popularize it with the mainland. London writes: Through the white crest of a breaker suddenly appears a dark figure, erect, a man-fish or a sea-god, on the very forward face of the crest where the top falls over and down, driving in toward shore, buried to his loins in smoking spray, caught up by the sea and flung landward, bodily, a quarter of a mile. It is a Kanaka on a surf-board. And I know that when I have finished these lines I shall be out in that riot of colour and pounding surf, trying to bit those breakers even as he, and failing as he never failed, but living life as the best of us may live it. SUMMARY
=======
The history of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) begins with the founding of the Continental Marines on 10 November 1775 to conduct ship-to-ship fighting, provide shipboard security and discipline enforcement, and assist in landing forces. Its mission evolved with changing military doctrine and foreign policy of the United States. Owing to the availability of Marine forces at sea, the United States Marine Corps has served in nearly every conflict in United States history. It attained prominence when its theories and practice of amphibious warfare proved prescient, and ultimately formed a cornerstone of the Pacific Theater of World War II. By the early 20th century, the Marine Corps would become one of the dominant theorists and practitioners of amphibious warfare. Its ability to rapidly respond on short notice to expeditionary crises has made and continues to make it an important tool for U.S. foreign policy.In February 1776, the Continental Marines embarked on their maiden expedition. The Continental Marines were disbanded at the end of the war, along with the Continental Navy. In preparation for the Quasi-War with France, Congress created the United States Navy and the Marine Corps. The Marines' most famous action of this period occurred in the First Barbary War (1801–1805) against the Barbary pirates. In the Mexican–American War (1846–1848), the Marines made their famed assault on Chapultepec Palace, which overlooked Mexico City, their first major expeditionary venture. In the 1850s, the Marines would see service in Panama, and in Asia. During the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865) the Marine Corps played only a minor role after their participation in the Union defeat at the first battle of First Bull Run/Manassas. Their most important task was blockade duty and other ship-board battles, but they were mobilized for a handful of operations as the war progressed. The remainder of the 19th century would be a period of declining strength and introspection about the mission of the Marine Corps. Under Commandant Jacob Zeilin's term (1864–1876), many Marine customs and traditions took shape. During the Spanish–American War (1898), Marines would lead U.S. forces ashore in the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, demonstrating their readiness for deployment. Between 1900 and 1916, the Marine Corps continued its record of participation in foreign expeditions, especially in the Caribbean and Central and South America, which included Panama, Cuba, Veracruz, Haiti, Santo Domingo, and Nicaragua.
In World War I, battle-tested, veteran Marines served a central role in the United States' entry into the conflict. Between the world wars, the Marine Corps was headed by Major General John A. Lejeune, another popular commandant. In World War II, the Marines played a central role, under Admiral Nimitz, in the Pacific War, participating in nearly every significant battle. The Corps also ...
