Forest & Flock, Bantry, County Cork
Come with me over the mountains...
A Craft & Design shop with a little soul on the south west coast of Ireland.
A little wander of our shop and its wonderful makers, from early this year. We had had the most beautiful start to our first year, and excited to see what the other side of the mountain brings.
Thanks to Sean O Sullivan Media & Inni-K Music for this little clip.
A Quick Dash Through Bantry Market
This is our local market and it happens every Friday throughout the year - although on a wet cold day in February it doesn’t look quite like this : - ) But in the summer, especially on the first Friday of each month, it is a busy and vibrant place.
We count ourselves very lucky to have such a resource on our doorstep and most weeks we’d make it down for a quick dash through. It’s quite hard to get from one end of the square to the other in a short time – because there’s always something to look at or someone you haven’t seen for a while..
We hope you find it a bit interesting – markets around the world are fascinating and perhaps similar, but maybe you can pick up clues to the differences between people and places too. Thanks to all the traders who let us point our camera at them.

The Corn Mill, Rolestown, Co. Dublin
SOLD
For Sale by Private Treaty -Zoned Conservation Area
The Old Corn Mill Complex, Rolestown, Swords, Co Dublin
This is a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of local history. Dating from the 1800's this is a two storey thatched cottage, a two storey mill and a stone stable block all standing on a c.0.651 hectare site along the Broadmeadow River, in the center of Rolestown Village.
Property Accommodation
The Corn Mill Complex
The site has frontage and access from a lay-by on the approach road to Rolestown House and the school /church, off the Ashbourne to Swords Road. It also fronts onto the Broadmeadow River and extends up to the old stone bridge over the river. It is a very private, mature and tranquil site with high trees and mature hedging surrounding it.
The old house is of stone and mud construction with a thatched roof covered with corrugated iron. The roof has collapsed in places. There are four rooms downstairs including the old kitchen with its large open fireplace and what used be the front shop / bar of a off-license and shebeen. The house is in a bad state of repair.
The old mill is of the same build and houses parts of the mill wheel including the cogs. Again the mill is in the same state of repair.
The old stable block is of stone construction with brick arched doorways and a slate roof.
The whole mill complex is a protected structure and the site of 0.61 hectares is zoned for conservation. Any potential purchasers should contact Fingal County Council to satisfy themselves on the details of this.
Features
Drive along the hedge lined roads on the Meath / Dublin border to the small country village of Rolestown. Here you are located in a wonderful, quiet rural setting, with easy access to the towns of Swords and Ashbourne. All this within c.10 minutes drive of Dublin Airport.
This property has sat undisturbed for a generation and now needs a new owner who will restore it to its former glory, retaining the character of the buildings and site. It is suited to a tourist related and craft related business and has the obvious potential for a residence subject to approved planning.
Directions
Directions : From Swords take the Ashbourne Road, pass Kettles Country House and Broadmeadow Riding School, then take the next right. The property is on the right ( see sign ).
TLYC Vlog Episode 7
A little later than expected, Michelle is back with Episode 7 of The Loveliest Yarn Company vlog
A few wee notes!
The yarns were from:
Skein Queen via Sue Stratford for the Voltage Shawl (not sweater!)
Giddy Aunt Yarns
Fine Fish Yarns and Isager from Ida's House
Self Striping from Dragon Hill Studio
The samples were lots of socks including some in City Knits Marie Curie WYS colour way, the Pip Colourwork Slow Exposure (on the TLYC site ; )), the Slow Exposure in The Wool Barn Yarn, The Catdigan Sweater (on the TLYC site ; )), the new Pip hat (coming soon), the Touch Me in a single skein of For the Love of Yarn (pattern is free on the site, yarn is available to buy ; )) ... oh and socks in yarn from The Moon and Sixpence, bought at Bantry Yarns (West Cork).
The shows mentioned were Spring into Wool Leeds and Wonderwool Wales and I am going to do my best to do these every second Wednesday (everything crossed!) xx

How To Clean Leather Horse Harness
We have quite a bit of harness - and even more mud. The two are natural friends and are always getting together. Cleaning and oiling harness is quite a nice and satisfying job, though, especially when a friend helps out (thanks Christina!). Glycerine soap, water, neatsfoot oil and elbow grease are all you need.
This is not the traditional Irish workhorse harness – we do have some of that too, but this comes from Norway and should out-last us.
We couldn’t make this a very exciting video – but we thought you might like to see more of the back-ground to taking the horses out on a job. Or, in this case, to Bantry Agricultural Show. We won third prize in the Carriage Driving category – which wouldn’t be too bad at all, except there were only three entrants!
Thanks for watching!

How To Plant Basket Willows.
We went to help our friends plant some of their basket-weaving willow crop and we thought you might be interested in how it's done. This was in April but it could have been done earlier in the year too.
Martin and Yvon O'Flynn live near Bantry in West Cork, Ireland. You can call them on 027 66111 if you're interested in seeing their workshop or going on one of their basketry courses. But they can't sell you willow rods, slips or cuttings because they don't have any spare (-- we'd better plant extra next year!).
This was one of our Meitheal group gatherings - where we take it turns to help each other out (and drink tea).

Helping Out At A National Tree Week Event – Horse Logging, Tree Planting, And Waving Hands About..
Irish National Tree Week is a good excuse to get people out into the woods in time for planting and thinning. We were so lucky with the weather this year and it was a pleasure to stomp about with spades and saws.
Madeline and Mike’s mixed woodland is very young still – it was planted straight into fields – but it already looks wonderful and there are plenty of first thinnings firewood to be harvested.
I couldn’t find the names of the two musicians at the end of this, but they were so good I couldn’t resist putting them in. Of course I will credit them as soon as I know who they are.
Well done Mike and Madeline for organising a great day (even though we’re very jealous of your woodland!)
Henry and the other horses are available for hire. They are capable of seriously hard work in woodlands – drawing logs out singly, or as a team of two for bigger timber. They have minimum impact on the forest floor or on the trees they walk through. Get in touch if we can help..

Making Our Homemade Horsedrawn Hearse. Part Three: Finished!
This is part three of the build. I did film quite a lot of the painting, but when it came to putting in the coachlines/pinstripes I found it hard enough without a camera looking over my shoulder too.
So here it is, ready to go. We hope you don't need our services too soon, but if you're in our County Cork, and you're interested then do get in touch. We didn't make it just to leave it under a dust cover in the barn.

Look What I Found - Thirteen Farmyard Animals In A Plank Of Yew Wood!
This project took much longer than I had suspected – mostly on the design. I’m not very good at drawing so I have to draw the same thing over and over until it starts looking like it should. But I learned a whole lot more about machining with the X-Carve machine..
