Chapter 10 4:05:57 - Exploration Updates
To fully explore and understand the ocean, we can no longer rely on a handful of large, expensive research vessels and vehicles. We truly need all hands on deck to do it.
On November 8-9, 2018, we brought together leaders and changemakers in ocean exploration, entertainment, recreation, and art to imagine new ways to empower an open, inclusive global community of ocean explorers. Our goal is to imagine creative ways to make the ocean so pervasive in modern culture that everyone has a positive association with and understanding of the sea.

WWU's Andy Bunn speaks about the Polaris Project
Andy Bunn, an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at WWU, presents The Polaris Project: A barge, twenty bunks, and a river at the top of the world, discussing his work in the Siberian Arctic with undergraduates from eight American and Russian universities.
The project's guiding scientific theme is the transport and transformations of carbon and nutrients as they move along the Kolyma River from terrestrial uplands to the Arctic Ocean. This is a central scientific issue as scientists struggle to understand a rapidly changing Arctic. Bunn discusses the involvement of WWU undergraduates during the past two summers and describe some of their scientific achievements and cultural experiences.

Governing Cities in the 21st Century
What should governance look like in the 21st century? Can we leverage national, provincial and municipal relationships to advance urban governance? How do we scale up local responses to reach collective goals?
At the School of Cities spring symposium on May 28, 2019, urban thought leaders, policy makers, planners, community advocates and business leaders gathered to discuss these questions and exchange ideas on ways to meet the challenges of governing cities in the midst of change.
Senate Passes Jobs, Energy and Commerce Bill
The Minnesota Senate passed the omnibus jobs, energy and commerce bill following an extended floor debate Monday, April 29.
In the area of economic development, the measure provides funding for several efforts, including combating labor trafficking, wage theft, vocational rehabilitation and job training.
The bill contains a controversial provision that would retroactively remove the minimum wage increase passed by the cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth. According to the bill's author, Senator Eric Pratt, R-Prior Lake, setting labor standards should be handled by the state rather than by local units. An amendment offered by Senator Scott Dibble, DFL-Minneapolis, failed to win majority support.
In the area of energy, the bill would create a solar grant program for schools, remove the moratorium on nuclear energy and lift the cap on hydropower production. It also would help fund the expansion of electric vehicle charging stations at businesses and government agencies through a revolving loan fund that would be repaid through user fees.
