Mom Warns Other About Dangers of Swimming In Quarries After Son Died
More from Inside Edition:
Thousands of quarries exist across the country but some can be disastrous. Jonathan Baksh, 19, jumped into Martin's Creek quarry in Pennsylvania in 2015, but he never made it back to land after suffering a cramp in the water. His mom was stunned when she found out her son was the second young man to die in quarry that year. Now, as the one year anniversary of her son's passing arrives next month, she's on a crusade to tell the world about the dangers of swimming in quarries.
A scything course at Pishill near Henley
Scything is a very effective and environmentally-friendly way to manage grasslands, not to mention a great way to get some exercise! The Chilterns Conservation Board runs scything courses every summer - this video shows a one-day course at Pishill in the Stonor Valley near Henley. The courses are led by Nigel Adams, a very experienced trainer in a range of countryside skills ( If you are interested in taking part in a course please contact Neil Jackson at the Conservation Board via njackson@chilternsaonb.org

The Goblin Mummer Play
Mummer plays are an artifact of medieval europe which are still performed to this day. Usually a hero like St. George fights a Turkish warrior, dragon, or other villan and is killed only to be raised by a doctor character. It has themes of death and rebirth which mirrored the religious medieval villages the mummer plays were intended for. I wrote this play and adapted it to film...and I may have other filmmakers do their interpretation of this play to see how many different visions come from the same text. St. George was performed by Steven Guynn, Goblin Warrior by Cherokee Hall, Princess Saba by Heather Price, and the doctor by Keith Dodson.

Background to the Mumming tradition
Researched by John Summerscales.
The central dramatic theme of mummers plays revolves around the killing of one or more adversaries by a self-proclaimed warrior and their subsequent revival by a comic doctor. The recurring theme of death and revival has led to the plays being seen as debased fertility rites of non-Christian or pre-Christian origin [1].
Mumming can be traced back at least as far as 1408.. Mumming occurs in Symondsbury (Dorset) on New Years Day, Norwich on St Georges Day, Snowshill (Glos) on St Barnabas Day - 11 June, during rush-bearing in the Pennines, Michaelmas Eve (28/9) in the Hebrides, in the Celtic Hallowe'en play Galoshan, in the Cheshire soul-caking on All Souls' Day (2/11), but mostly in the weeks around Christmas. The custom was so widespread, and the costumes so outrageous, that a plot to murder Henry IV by a gang disguised as mummers was only narrowly foiled. [2].
The tradition also survives as pace-egging - performed at Easter - formerly in the NW but more recently it, perhaps, survives best around Mytholmroyd in the Calder Valley (West Yorkshire).
