THE LAND OF BEAUTIFUL HORSES (THE DALTON BROTHERS HORSE RANCH)
The Horse Whisperer - Cappadocia, Turkey
Tucked between the rolling hills of Cappadocia, I had the pleasure to meet the Horse Whisper, Ekrem. He is the owner of The Dalton Brothers Ranch in Cappadocia, Turkey who rescues wild horses and gives breathtaking tours of the landscape via horseback. Ekrem has a fire and passion for wildlife that ignited my passion to tell his story. If you want to know more, check out his website at: Enjoy the video.

When people heard we were heading to Cappadocia, Turkey with our 3 year old and 7 month old baby, many said this wasn’t the best idea. The main theme was “Turkey isn’t safe”, the landscape isn’t kid friendly and there isn’t much to do with kids. Honestly, Cappadocia exceeded all our expectations. We found there was loads to do with kids, the July heat was completely bearable, and Turkey (especially Cappadocia) felt safe. Here are a few tips when traveling to Cappadocia with kids:
1) Hike around. Cappadocia has many hikes, with the Pigeon Valley Hike being a favorite of ours. This easy 30-45 minute hike goes through the lush valley floor, walking through what appears to be very much lived in caves that are growing vegetables and fruits along the way. Make sure to ask about the best route before starting a hike as the trail heads are not clearly marked.
2) Fact check your “cave hotel”. Many hotels say they are cave hotels, but are actually daylight basements of sorts. All the hotels cave (or basement) are subject to damp, cool conditions that can give you hotel room a mildew smell. We recommend 3-4 nights as you can see all you need to and not get to bothered by your room.
3) Stay in Goreme. We stayed in Uchisir and thought it was beautiful, but there was much less in the form of restaurants and cafes. Goreme was a bit less rustic, with loads more food and drinks.
4) Don’t miss sunrise. We have never seen such a beautiful site as the over a hundred balloons peppering the skyline.
5) Be prepared for claustrophobia in the Underground City. It was really incredible, but if small spaces are not your thing, it may be best to skip this.
6) Avoid carpet school. Unless you are really interested in buying a carpet, then go head, but if not this felt a bit of a high pressured setting. The process of making the carpets was interesting, but not worth the final 45 minutes of tea, carpet displays and pressure to buy. We didn’t like it, the kids lost their patience, and we left empty handed (which was always the plan). We were given the impression that it is an educational experience, but in our visit it was obvious it was more of a sales mission. No thanks!
7) Tell your friends. We were shocked at how mellow it was, and locals said that tourism has been hit hard in Cappadocia, and Turkey in general. It was incredible to enjoy the sites with less traffic, but this regions key import is tourism. VISIT….and then tell a friend.
We hope you enjoyed, thanks for watching!

Arriving in the old car of a local rancher, we wait outside for the horses to be saddled up. (I got a rather grumpy one. It was amusing.) Call to prayer fills the air.
