Dorking is a market town in Surrey, England between Ranmore Common in the North Downs range of hills and Leith Hill in the Greensand Ridge, centred 21 miles from London. In the Georgian and Victorian periods six prominent sites in the former parish or on its boundaries became grand country estates: Leith Hill Place, Denbies (today a vineyard/hotel), Norbury Park, Polesden Lacey, Wotton House and Deepdene; five of which along with nearby Box Hill's promontory and chalk grassland slopes belong to the National Trust.
Dorking is a commuter and retirement settlement with three railway stations and a few large offices of multinational companies. Similarly, Malden in 1911, noted the place was almost entirely residential and agricultural, with some lime works on the chalk, though not so extensive as those in neighbouring parishes, a little brick-making, water-mills (corn) at Pixham Mill, and timber and saw-mills. Fine sand often in veins of pink, used for mortar and in glassmaking was dug, particularly in the 19th century — the Dorking Caves were accordingly excavated under southern parts of the town centre itself.
Dorking chickens with short five-toed legs are a major breed. The town has a local government headquarters and hosts repeating loops of the FIA-ranked London-Surrey cycle classic elite category event every year.
Dorking is in the west of the area between hill ranges in southern England known as Holmesdale which has headwaters of several rivers. The town's geography is undulating; for example, the elevation of the southern point of the central one-way system is 76 metres and on its northern side the elevation is 59–60 metres. To the south west of the town is Leith Hill, also owned by the National Trust, the second highest point in the south east of England after Walbury Hill. The tower on the summit elevates the hill to 1,000 ft (300 m) above sea level. The area is towards the east of the Surrey Hills AONB surrounded by the Greensand Ridge, including Holmbury Hill and Pitch Hill, as well as the nearby escarpment of the North Downs from Box Hill to Newlands Corner.
Dorking three main trading streets of High Street, West Street and South Street are complemented by a small open-air shopping centre, St Martin's Walk, which is adjacent to the town's main car park and easily accessed from the High Street. In the late 1990s Dorking Halls was given a huge refit, to make it a cinema and theatre complex. In 2003 a new modern leisure centre and swimming pool were added to the Dorking Halls Complex. There is a thin, somewhat shiny metal statue of a Dorking cockerel on the Deepdene roundabout.
Dorking and nearby Box Hill were chosen as part of the route for the 2012 London Olympics cycling road race and have featured in the FIA-ranked London-Surrey cycle classic every year since. The Deepdene Trail, a heritage walking trail, opens in September 2016 offering walks for all levels of fitness in a quiet space just 15 minutes from Dorking High Street.
Dorking is at the junction of the A24 (London to Worthing) and A25 (Maidstone to Guildford) roads. Dorking railway station, on the Epsom to Horsham Sutton & Mole Valley Line. Dorking Deepdene, on the Guildford to Redhill North Downs Line. Dorking West, also on the Guildford to Redhill North Downs Line.

Deepdene Trip part one
Deepdene was an estate & country house, a hillside manor that descended from earlier Earls of Surrey throughout the middle ages to the 23rd Earl of Arundel & Surrey who became the 5th Duke of Norfolk in 1652, it was sold by his descendant the 11th Duke of Norfolk in 1808 to the Hope banking family.
Situated on the south eastern edge of the town, the Deepdene was the greatest of Dorkings Estates. Charles Howard Established his house at Dibden and laid out it's ornamental gardens in the mid 17th century. His family had owned most of the Manor of Dorking for centuries. His grandson, also Charles, built a paliadian mansion on the site in the 1760s and continued to spend his summers at the Deepdene even after becoming 10th Duke of Norfolk in 1777.
The 11th Duke chose to reside at other of his estates, however.
In 1808 Thomas Hope, one of the richest men in England, bought the Deepdene, he enlarged the house with orangeries, conservatories, a library and galleries, filling it with antiques sculptures and works of art. The Estate was further extended by the aquisition of the Chart park and Betchworth Castle Estates, which were incorporated into the Deepdene. During the ownership of Hope's son, M.P. Henry, the grounds stretched 12 miles from boxhill to brockham, further extension saw the mansion become the splendid renaissance-style palazzo where Disraeli wrote Coningsby. Towards the end of the century the Deepdene passed to the Duke of Newcastle who had married into the Hope family. He let it to Lily, Dowager Duchess of Marlborough and her nephew, Winston Churchill, often visited her there. In the 1920s the Estate was broken up as Maurice Chance developed some of the grounds for housing. the house became a grand hotel with 90 rooms, it closed in 1936. A bypass of the town (one of the 1st in the country), ruined the gardens. Occupied by the Southern Railway throughout the second world war, it never reverted to residential use.The Deepdene was sadly Demolished in 1967, now a modern office block occupies the site and all that remains of the Hope Treasure House is the family Mausoleum which was mysteriously buried to roof level,
DEEPDENE SOUTHERN RAILWAY WW2 UNDERGROUND HQ
Telephone Exchange and Control Centre.
During ww2, the southern railway commandered the Deepdene hotel, to utilise it for its wartime emergency HQ, in the hotel grounds was an existing network of natural caves, which were made suitable by adapting them for use as a bunker to house the telephone exchange & control centre, outside the bunker, concrete blocks with metal loops are still present for tethering the 99 foot ariel for the emergency conditions, a 4ft thick slab of concrete covered the complex, the tunnels were well ventilated and had radiators in each room to regulate the temperature, the southern railway manager Eustace Missenden lived nearby and had a swithboard ext in his house, during the air raids he spent many nights there with his wife.

Exploring the Deepdene Trail to the Hope Mausoleum
Matthew Holdsworth and I are continuing our exploration of the Deepdene Trail which crosses the Greensand Way.
Deepdene was an estate and country house occupying the south-east of Dorking, Surrey, England, the aspects of it that remain being a large minority of its woodland garden, interwoven amidst Dorking Golf Course. The remains of the gardens are Grade II* listed with the adjoining Chart Park on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
Here is the earlier part of this exploration:

Gomshall to Dorking (via Leith Hill) - 15 miles (25km) Day Hike
A brilliant Day hike, covering the distance of around 15 miles (25km)
It all starts in small town named Gomshall, which is services by National Rail.
The Trail ends in Dorking, also services by National Rail.
I drove there and parked up in Dorking right outside the main station (3.40GBP for the whole day on Saturday).
I then took a short walk (less than 3 minutes) to Dorking Deepdene station, where i took a train to Gomshall (Platform 2, its only 1 stop and the journey takes around 10-15 mins)
It took us around 6 hrs of Hiking time all together (30 mins lunch and few short stops throughout)
If you take a train from London, it takes roughly 1hr30mins to get there (from London Waterloo, with 1 change either in Dorking or in Guildford):
Via Guilford take South West Trains towards Portsmouth Harbour and change in Guildford, take GWR towards Redhill and get off in Gomshall
Via Dorking South West Trains towards Dorking, get off at the last stop, take a short walk to Dorking Deepdene station and take GWR towards Reading, getting off in Gomshall
I hiked with these guys:
It costs 5GBP to have a guide (you have to pay for travel separately). Great bunch of people! Highly recommended.
