Bauhaus School; Dessau, Germany :: Modernist Abroad
Barr and Johnson both visited the Dessau Bauhaus, which provided guiding principles for their work at the Museum of Modern Art and shaped their own taste. Barr visited once in 1927, and Johnson made repeated visits between 1929 and 1933. In addition to touring the school building designed by Gropius in 1925, they visited the “masters” in their houses nearby.
In Moholy-Nagy’s living room, we see in the distance Wilhelm Wagenfeld’s classic table lamp, which exemplifies the geometry and functionality typical of the Bauhaus. Wagenfeld reduced the lamp form to its basic “simple elements: the sphere, cylinder, cube and cone.”

Bauhaus building in Dessau - Architect: Walter Gropius, 1926
The Bauhaus building is regarded as a key work of European modernism. It combines the principles of functionalism with an outstanding architectonic quality, using then modern materials such as glass and reinforced concrete. Built as a school of design, its structure expresses the curriculum of Bauhaus ideas. Besides this architectonic significance with its radical, new approaches, the location also draws its historically unique relevance from the important contributions made here to the radical renewal of art, design and architecture in the twentieth century. The Bauhaus building currently houses the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

Description
Bauhaus World Heritage - The Masters' Houses
The Bauhaus teachers called themselves master instead of professor. Renowned inhabitants included Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Lyonel Feininger, Georg Muche, Laszlo Moholy, Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer.
The Bauhaus master's houses belong to the world heritage. the houses are semi-detached. Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky were once roof mates and expressed their creativity to their heart's desire. The architectural firm of Gropius designed the houses, so Gropius was on his own a two-earner household. After a period of some agony under the East German regime, the houses have now been completely restored and opened to the public.
The houses were delivered in 1926 when the first inhabitants hauled their belongings inside. Many of the things adorning the interior were designed by the Bauhaus and manufactured in their own workshops. Three of the four houses survived the Second World War; though the detached house of Gropius himself did not make it.
The Masters' Houses now serve the noble aim of hosting exhibitions.
In the house where painter Lyonel Feininger used to live, the Kurt Weill centre is now established, and in the Kandinsky-Klee house one can now admire an exhibition about the last director of Bauhaus: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
On the chair designed by himself, with his ever-present cigar close by, he looks back at an eventful life of which the final echoes can be heard from Wassily Kandinsky's adjacent room.

Bauhaus Masters' houses
Masters' Houses by Walter Gropius. Built 1925-26.
In 1925, the city of Dessau also commissioned Walter Gropius with the construction of three semi detached houses for the Bauhaus masters and a detached house for its director. The plot lies in a small pine-tree wood where Ebertallee stands today – one of the axes of the Dessau Wörlitz Garden Realm between the Seven Pillars of the Georgium and Amaliensitz. In 1926, Gropius and the Bauhaus masters László Moholy-Nagy and Lyonel Feininger, Georg Muche and Oskar Schlemmer as well as Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee were able to move in with their families.
Later tenants included Hannes Meyer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Josef Albers, Hinnerk Scheper, and Alfred Arndt.
With this ensemble of buildings, Gropius aimed, using industrially prefabricated and simple “building block” construction elements, to put the principles of efficient construction into practice – both in relation to the architecture and the building process itself. The standardisation of construction elements was, however, in view of the technical resources available at the time, only partially realised.

Dessau, An Archipelago
This is a UC Berkeley M.Arch film project by Neal Barber.
This video appropriates its content from the 1927 German film, Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Großstadt (Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis), which depicted the urban experience of Weimar Berlin. The existing narrative has been re-edited to capture the new city fabric of Dessau. The historic home of the Bauhaus is now the stage for the new urban experiment of the Archipelago, an idea put forth by Ungers, Koolhaas and Aureli. With a receding population, Dessau will retreat to several dense urban pockets (the islands) surrounded by unpopulated green space (the sea). The film recontextualizes past ideas of urbanity and reconstructs them into the 21st century manifestation the city.
Walter Gropius

Bauhaus Lives! - New designs for Dessau | Arts.21
From Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe, 70 architecture students were tasked with designing new visions for Dessau at a summer school run by the Bauhaus-Dessau Foundation. The city in eastern Germany is in desperate need of some fresh ideas: Dessau, once famous for the Bauhaus School, is in a state of decline. Young residents are moving away, and the city's population is shrinking. Meanwhile, workshop students were brimming with some radical new concepts. Has the spirit of Bauhaus been reborn? ARTS.21 talks to these young architects.
